Quantic Dream's boss David Cage is a bit skeptical of the upcoming motion-sensing peripheral from Microsoft, claiming that the company lied on it's Natal presentation at last year's E3 conference. Speaking to Destructoid, Cage said:

I've seen Natal, and I'm really curious to see what they're going to do with it. I was a bit frustrated that they presented it with a sci-fi-type presentation..

When the kid comes in with the skateboard and the laser ray, scanning the skateboard, and then it's in the game. The ability to take pictures and then map images into a game is possible, but not to the extent that the Natal promo video would like us to believe. We are in the industry; we know what's feasible and what's not.

I thought it was a little bit lying to present it that way, because it will let [consumers] think that they will [see] something that they are not really close to getting.

Microsoft is set to reveal more details of their new hardware at this year's E3 while Cage on the other hand, was already hinting at PlayStation Move support for Heavy Rain since Sony's magic wand was announced.

Have you ever used the Move? I thought not...
The move may LOOK like the wiimote, I think its patent breaking right off the top... but only in its physique, I was able to program and use the Move to accurately write my name on a computer screen neater and more accurately then I can use a mouse, within 5 minutes of getting it. I predict BIG things for the move if Sony invests in the right studios, I've seen the game designs at my studio that are being hyped to publishers with the Move being a key feature... and if Sony invests, then it'll be really cool.

The wiimote... I mean uhhh... the move gives programmers like me the ability to make user interfaces never before seen on consoles because of the lack of a mouse, now if we could just get a gig of ram and gfx card with its own gig, then we'd be kicking.

Well, what do you think guys? Do you agree with Cage?

Cage, like anyone else, is a complete idiot if he thinks that the "promo video" for Natal is accurately depicting anything that it does. Hell, the video says dramatization in the bottom corner to begin with.

The video was built to drum up excitement for Natal, as opposed to Sony, while interesting tech as well, had a very, while not altogether boring, slapped together presentation.

They've never shown the image recording feature in real life yet, so you can speculate on how well it'll work, but to expect that it'll work as well as in a pre-made video is just stupid.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious David, you dolt.

I think when he said "I've seen Natal." he ment he has played with it a bit. So he is comparing what he has seen first hand with what Microsoft presented in their promo video.. That's my understanding from the article anyway..

Lets rewind the hands of time to E3 2005 with the PS3 tech demo... then let me paste Mr. Cage's comment [insert comment here] "I thought it was a little bit lying to present it that way, because it will let [consumers] think that they will [see] something that they are not really close to getting." No offense Sony, still love your system :-)

It was pretty obvious that it was just a lie, with like computerized stuff and timing and then the kid would act as if the sensor did all that he did, THE REALITY is that it wont work just like the wii sensor and it will have a lag delay.

i think "Well, what do you think guys? Do you agree with Cage?" would fit in the actual article rather than a comments. just a thought.

This stupid thing that both of them are doing is pathetic. The "We want to be cooler than the Wii" charade they're putting on is a joke. Everyone knows this means stupid pin the tail on the donkey type garbage games. I'm not that hard into video gaming in the first place, just a few core games. But if this is seriously the direction the industry is headed in, along with this silly 3D stuff, then I'm done with video games. I do have other things to do that don't involve me looking like a street performer.

100% agree with him.

Natal is nothing new, Even Sony tried making their PS3 eye out to be better then it is with the videos of the PS3 eye showing some really cool things yet when it came down to playing with it, It was just the same old stuff just a little better.
Lets Hope the PS3 Move will really be True 1:1 motion control AND... the games will Use the full motion of it, not just add it as a last thing to the game and just makes it crap.

How could they have lied? They played game with Natal in front of an audience!

Because it was a recorded video...The game they played with the red balls was laggy as hell...The skateboard game was a video and most of the tech demos were just that...They were pre rendered scenes with actors moving in front of the screen with pre-determined actions/voice commands.

That is how they lied.

how does the CG trailer even remotely compares to a girl randomly kicking balls to a skreen? and with a lot of lag, and extremely poor recognition. At some moments, body parts appear on different parts of the screen!

First, that was DEMO at e3, an incomplete game. Second, there wasn't alot of lag, and the recognition was quite accurate. Maybe we didn't see the same video.

Of course the advertisement was fake, all of them are.

Not to mention the kid had his hands covering part of the skateboard

Also, in the invisible walls podcast, they said that when you tried the Milo demo, MS employees told you what to say so it would seem like a real conversation...

Well yeah. I mean, it's just like the eyetoy. Even if it's 300x more accurate and usable, its still going to get boring after a half hour.

They have to make it look super cool to cover that up.

obviously it's was a fake they showed a video commercial trying to spruce up something that were no one is close to completing yet if japan hasn't got it down completely yet then someone like microsoft isn't going to get it anytime soon im mean japan is just starting with 3d technology
scanning and putting something like that in a game. i call bullshit

Nintendo did the same when they first showcased Wii. Remember the Metroid video where the dude actually crouched to turn into the ball? That's ridiculous. They were also playing ACTUAL tennis on the stage, when they were playing Wii sports. That kind of movement is totally unnecessary, as the game cannot detect it anyway! Ridiculous!

it was suspicious enought to offer a video and not a real demo like the one sony did.

fishy from the start....

Natal looked like crap at E3 when the guy was demoing it he barely lifted his foot and the avatar on screen went into a seizure.

I don't see a way for real games to use Natal at all just stupid "wii type" games.

"David Cage founded Quantic Dream in 1997. He has designed and directed all three games so far released by the studio: Omikron: The Nomad Soul (1999), Fahrenheit (2005), and Heavy Rain, which was released in February 2010."

Mr Cage here has made more then one GREAT game, ever even played Heavy Rain?
What's your favorite game? Halo 3?
He is merely giving his opinion, if you dont like it, dont read the article.

From the moment they came with a video and not a live demo, we knew it was too good to be true. The knew PS would come out with something and needed something that seems cooler to rival that, so they made a video of what they would like to have but still has a long way to go. It's like Mille Vanille trying to compete with Micheal Jackson; lip sync vs real voice talent

That first video for Killzone 2 that Sony showed at E3 that looked like some kind of Pixar movie and for weeks they claimed it was actual gameplay footage? Sony lied too.

# thats not relevantGuest 2010-04-21 17:55
because Sony's killzone 2 footage was a target render and the actual game lived up to the quality of the footage, you should play it, it's one of the graphically best games out there, still bests anything the 360 has to offer graphically :-)
