Casual games are no threat to hardcore

casual-gamesAlthough gaming seems to be an ongoing trend now among casual gamers, there's nothing for the hardcore to be worried about. According to Doug Creutz of Cowen and Company, these "non-traditional" formats can actually be good for business.

Said Creutz, "We believe that these newer gaming media represent a distinct and non-competitive market segment from console gaming, which is dominated by the core gamer."

He furthered, now that the consoles have settled in their mass market prices, the console cycle will "reaccelerate to the benefit of the publishers that are positioned to take advantage."

So really, there's no need to worry that your "serious" games will soon be overrun by casual ones. There's room for co-existence in the market, and both types of games will do shine on their own.

Casual games ARE a threat to hardcore.

Both Dead Space 2 and Dead Rising 2 were delayed so crappy casual versions could be made on the Wii.

Lots of developers devoted a share of their finite resources to the Wii, away from from the hardcore.

Developers go where the money is, and Wii is selling so much it's turning them away from the other systems. And that's the threat

You have a point there. Since casual gaming is more and more popular we get less really good, long games. For me that sucks...

Casual gamers are not a threat to hardcore gamers. Now, developers focusing too much on casual games and on trying to reel in casual gamers IS a threat to hardcore gamers and gaming in general. Casual gamers have no sense of product loyalty like hardcore gamers do. To casual gamers buying a game is not an important thing to do.

Most casual games are made by companies that do not make or publish games that are considered hard core.

Want just one example? Apple has brought in over a BILLION dollars on casual games from iTunes.

Both markets are billion $ markets and neither compete with each other. It's impossible for one to affect the other.

Tell that to who? Did you understand what I wrote? Neither market affects the other. All three consoles are very successful. So what exactly am I telling a Wii customer? That they have TONS AND TONS of casual games to choose from to have fun with?

you can tell the Wii "hardcore" gamers why there's a big deficit of "hardcore" games on that console and why there's so much shovelware there. If you haven't heard Nintendo fans complaining about the lack of "hardcore" games then you've living under a rock.

Nothing you've said makes any sense.

Are you trying to explain to me that there are HARDCORE PLAYERS out there that ONLY own a Wii?

Who the f@ck are those people? You don't buy a Wii for HARDCORE gaming.

I have NOT heard of ANY Wii owner that has bitched about a lack of hardcore games for the Wii. Because when they want a hardcore title they turn on their other console of choice. What I have heard are idiot fanboys crying about the Wii not having HARDCORE titles because they are attention whores or whatever else their problem is.

Either way, all of this HAS ABSOLUTLY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TOPIC!!!! No one is designing casual games for the Wii INSTEAD of hardcore games for the Wii.

There is a lack of hardcore titles for the Wii because it's a casual based machine. WTF would be the point of trying to create FF13 for it? They would lose money on that venture and it has absolutly NOTHING to do with the fact that casual games exist.

Also, WTF does shovelware have to do with anything? Seems to me you have a bone to pick and are acting like a douche simply because you're sitting behind a monitor. Take your agenda and promptly shove it where the sun doesn't shine.

I know a few hardcore gamers who at the time of the wii release could only afford it. Therefore, There ARE hardcore gamers with just a Wii, who are pissed off due to the lack of Good, even decent games on the Wii. Unless it's made by Nintendo the games are usually lacking, Nintendo makes terrible games to (Wii Music) There are a select few games made by other developers that have been great on the Wii though. Still 97% of the games are shovelware. So ISO Shut it. You can't possibly say there aren't hardcore gamers who don't just own a Wii. there is.

Now you two are just being assholes.

You are now arguing the Wii has NO GOOD GAMES. OMFG!!!! The Wii SUCKS BALLS!!!!

STFU both of you. It's painfully clear you did NOT understand my post at all. Want proof? Neither of you can tie the production of games into your lame ass agenda filled comments.

So I'll say it again...the production of casual games DOES NOT IN ANY WAY AFFECT the production of what would be considered "hard core" games.

Now you can slam the Wii all you want like the little children you clearly are.

Never? How many upcoming games were cancelled because they are riskier to make than casual games which cost a tiny fraction to develop? Sadness anyone? :-x

How about YOU answer that question. Before you do, you can only list games that DID NOT come out on any other console or PC.

Example. FF13. It cost X dollars to make. You can't just port that to the Wii. It would literally be an entirely new game. It would again cost Y dollars to make. Are they going to get Y+ dollars back for FF13 on Wii? HELL NO!!!!! Most people are going to buy the GOOD VERSION.

That example has NOTHING TO DO with casual games. It has to do with the Wii being lower quality then other consoles.

Some things are better off NOT being made for the Wii. That's the Wiis fault, not casual games.

Profits from these low budget casual games fund the potentially loss making hardcore games and it's so difficult to guarantee a profit on most games people just have to suck it up and accept how things are.

make an intelligent argument and they down rank it...

it's common business practice to make an assured profit in many areas, and take big chances in others.

you really think a company's bottom line could take 3yrs of development on a new multi-million dollar "hardcore" IP without something propping it up? not unless you've got microsoft money...

maybe if some of these dev studios that closed recently had slightly more diversified portfolios they could have survived. just a thought, not claiming it is fact.

There's no problem with making casual games to rake in the cash to stay afloat and to invest on the "big" IPs. The problem is when devs overdo it and keep taking from the "money tree" of casual games to the point of delaying the big projects or canceling them altogether.

Said Creutz, "We believe that these newer gaming media represent a distinct and non-competitive market segment from console gaming, which is dominated by the core gamer."

Sure iPhone games don't compete with console games, but they do compete with PSP & DS titles. Casual gamers by definition play games that exist on thier portable devices, making them less likely to purchase titles for handhelds.
Other parties are starting to encroach into the gaming market, keep chanting 'consoles are a different market' & hope the developers don't jump ship & go where the money is. Casual iphone gamers have one store that works very well, is the same true of the PSP network store and the DS store ?

since 2004 when nintendo launched there ds. there has been an increse in casual games, and a decrese in hardcore games. then nintendo reseased there wii in 2006 wich increased the number of casual games yet again, same thing with the ipone.
