The Xbox 360 version of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will be spread across two discs, compared to the single Blu-ray disc for the PS3 version. It's not a new practice, but it's something developer Mercury Steam believes should be looked into by Microsoft.

"I think it's something Microsoft are going to experience more and more - that they need to help developers overcome the storage problem," said studio boss Dave Cox in an interview with Xbox World 360 magazine.

Mercury Steam is doing all it can for Lords of Shadow, though, and according to Cox Microsoft knows that. "Microsoft actually sent their tech guys to the studio to see the game and look at [how we're] compressing it, but they said: 'Okay, it's good. You're doing all you can.'," he said.

To remedy the disc-swapping, Mercury Steam is letting Xbox 360 owners install everything on the first disc to their consoles. Choosing to install will let gamers play using only the second disc.

Cox revealed that the game will run for about 24 hours long but clarified that despite Hideo Kojima's involvement with the title, the cutscenes aren;t really that long.

"They're pretty short," he said. "Our longest one is 14 minutes, which is the end sequence... The game's around 24 hours long and every level's different. We have so much variety and we re-use very little assets."

2-discs and 24 hours long? I think this will be something to look forward to. Swapping discs isn't really bad anyway as long as the disc changes take place at certain parts like older PSX games.

The install pretty much takes care of the swapping hassle anyway.

Well then they need to get over themselves and either deal with it or get a hard drive.

you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, friend. :-*

saying "3-s***ties" and then immediately calling people ignorant won't really do you any favours.

If games like Crysis, COD, GoW and Halo can fit into one disc and still outshine 99% of other games in graphics I hardly think the discs are the problem. Granted DVD space is limiting development but it encourages better graphics engines and programming of resources. I would love to see more games as downloadable with Xboxes coming with 4TB of hard drive space. Then there would be no issues with disc scratching or skipping. Just do it like arcade games and keep them on a server or two for available download all the time and connection the download to licenses. Should allow the user to download the games they want and clear space when they don't need it.

I love these games but they do NOT outshine 99% of other games in graphics(unless your including Wii games), sorry don't know what your looking at.

You're forgetting Crysis either intentionally or stupidly. Crysis is, as far as I have seen, THE most demanding game graphically.

Regardless, his argument is still wrong. It's not about graphical detail, it's about content. If you have so many graphics models that you run out of room, it doesn't mean the game looks good, it just means it's long.

how can you say those games are outclassing 99% of the games out there. it is a ridiculous statement.. and crisis 2 does not look better than most games out there either. the first was out of this world for its time. but the 2nd looks much like everyone else. i love playing those games, but looking better than the rest is a stretch. a big one. and length does not only decide how much you can fit on the disc, it is a mix of the 2. ff13 is way longer the 24 hours, and it is one disc. blu-ray is a better format than dvd. we all know this. like discs were better than cartridges.

That's why FF13 has little to no exploration and is very limited in terms of variety too.

Yes but, how long do those games last if they have extreme graphics? A few hours at most. Here's how a look at it. I could spend $60 on a game that looks really nice and last 4 hours or I could spend $60 on a game that last 24 hours with decent or great graphics.

Games like COD, GoW, and Halo? How is it impressive that they can fit on one disc? Their single player modes last about 5 hours... Yeah gears looks pretty good but Halo 3 is dated and CoD uses pretty basic textures with exceptionally good lighting to mask them. It's not about the visual fidelity, it's about the length of the game. You used pretty poor examples for your argument anyway... MGS4, GTA4, Uncharted 2, and GOW3 are all better looking AND at least twice as long as those games. They all fit on one disc... granted it's a Blu Ray disc for most of them... which gets to the point of this article... Microsoft fucked up. They were rushing their system and they didn't go with HD-DVD for their games. Oops.

Crysis is a PC game. Completely irrelevant to anything in this article.

Lost Odysessy, Final Fantasy XIII and other DLCs(on discs) are the ones that I know require 2+ discs. I do agree with the developers, Microsoft need to look for an alternative. The best alternative if not blu-ray, HD-DVD. That would eliminate 2 dvd/1 dual layer dvd problem.

i install all of my games to the hdd because it minimizes heat, noise, vibrations, and the laser will not wear out anytime soon. plus, hdd read and load speeds are a bit faster than disc speeds.

so thumbs up to mercury-steam for adopting disc installation to the drive to minimize swappings.

2nd hand 20GB hdds now sell for like $20-30 bucks on craigslist.com so the peeps without hdds can now pick one up.

If you have a 360 you can play the first part over and over even if you sell both discs?

The way I see it, you will likely need the 2nd disc to verify you actually own the game even when first disc is installed to your HDD.

Seriously? People still bitching about swapping discs? Get over yourselves and off your lazy asses. It takes all of 1 min (not even) of your time and you will likely only do it once.

it's about the capacity of the disc. bigger capacity in a single disc is always better for developers. but i guess you're not a developer so you don't care about these things.

Oh no. They have to duplicate directories. Who cares? Its not like the game would fit on a single disc if it were 7 gigs instead of 6.8. Since when has a Heido Kojima game ever fit on a single disc? (Yeahs its happened I know.) They are FMV fests that eat up precious disc space. Just think that a 2 hour movie eats up a single layer dvd. You know that there are at LEAST 2 hours of FMVs in this game. 360 games only get 6.8 gigs of the disc. so 6.8-4.7 = 2.1 and you know the game can't be made in 2.1 gigs. Yeah I know they can compress the video blah blah blah. I'm just making an argument... for arguments sake. :-*

Im gonna buy this one but Im not too excited about the fact that its not like symphony of the night. I think they should make a 2.5D symphony instead of going all 3D. Castlevania needs to be more rpg action game than just plain action like the first Castlevanias.

both platform have it and we enjoy the game. Im a 360 owner. Swapping disc or not, I still have the chance to play the game. That's all matters. Enough said.

I dont think swapping disc is that big of a deal granted that I dont have a 360 but a PS3, but Im sure everyone went through this with the PSX, and installing takes care of this, but this might be a problem later for 360, best looking game I think to date is Uncharted 2 Among Thieves, when developers look to put detail like that on 360 then disc space may pose problems, granted that 360 games are already quite impressive

it's not problem we can change disks like PSX or PS2 or any other platforms . by the way Red Dead Redemption was 1disk in 360 and 30hr long gameplay with amazing graphic even 720p on 306 and it was only 1disk.
