Activision reveals new direction for the Call of Duty series

The Infinity Ward drama caused quite a stir yesterday, from the reported bouncer type dudes storming the studio to the sudden departure of IW heads Vince Zampella and Jason West. Now Activision has finally responded to the issue and revealed its plan for the future of the Call of Duty franchise.

Here's a brief summary of the Press Release as obtained by G4:

The publisher has confirmed studio heads Vince Zampella and Jason West have left the company, but issued no other comment related to their departure. There was no mention of "insubordination" or "breach of contract" in Activision's statement.

Activision Publishing CTO Steve Pearce and head of production Steve Ackrich are temporarily in charge of Infinity Ward.

According to the release, Infinity Ward will move forward on developing two downloadable map packs for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, both due for release sometime in 2010.

A new Call of Duty is coming from Treyarch Games later this year.

Infinity Ward will remain central to Call of Duty's future.

Activision also vaguely discussed intentions for the future of the series, which include pulling the Call of Duty franchise under a singular business unit. Activision also intends to "expand" the Call of Duty brand similar to what Blizzard Entertainment has done with its franchises.

This lines up with Activision's public intentions to eventually release a subscription-based Call of Duty game. According to Activision, this change "will include a focus on high-margin digital online content and further the brand as the leading action entertainment franchise in new geographies, new genres and with new digital business models."

G4 also got hold of a leaked memo that an unknown developer (possibly Infinity Ward) will be in charge in the upcoming Call of Duty game that will be due in 2011 and not Sledgehammer Games' "action-adventure" Call Of Duty game that was previously thought. k well this can either make the next call of duty game by IW better or worse. Im not really sure how the whole game designing/producing thing works but im guessing the people head of the company are the ones that usually make the whole concept of the game. the former people in charge, Jason west and Vince Zampella, created two of the best FPS ever. in my opinion they practically revolutionized online multiplayer with Call of duty 4, then with the sequel they took their already amazing game and added some cool extras. I think that if the new heads of IW decide to try something new it will either be good or bad. Also if they try to copy the same multiplayer engine of MW2 and COD4 hopefully they wont screw up like Treyarch's horrible attempt with COD WAW.
This is my own opinion please dont hate me if u disagree.

Of course people only talk about the Multiplayer portion of the game. I have to say MW2's single player was epic but also short. The game is the same to me but cheaper in a sense that you can camp like crazy.

Subscription for an FPS GAME! They just lost a customer for that CoD.

If you say MW2 is for noobs than BFBC2 is for retards!!First off all MW2 has got great if not the best multiplayer out there just like MW1 but enhanced.And BFBC2 i dont know what to say about gameplay...it sucks...its horrible optimized game.There is no game that is in same class with MW2 in gameplay and graphics realize that kid

i hate to input, but i think a game could have 2d graphics so long as the story was great cod4 was a great game single player and multiplayer but... i have played mw2 and its all shin and gloss graphics the game play was cut down big time ( i don't wish to argue with you i am stateing what i have seen ) i personally think that if is going to shoot themselves in the foot

MW2 is for retards... it sucks on PC. they force useless cots onto the player.. the maps are not atall interactive. everything is solid. pretty textures YAY... fucking lame...... go BFbc2. at least the game play is variable. MW2 is repetitive and lame. single player was good tho.

1 - Activision direction made the MW2 a holywood bad game
2 - Activision asked IW to make the game more online driven so no more HC games and fps and wellcome fallout like

But on the matter at hand; I would never ever pay a subscription fee to play a single game. I pay enough for Xbox Live, although that's quite cheap if you keep in mind what you get..

Anyway, I believe the Call of Duty series is doomed as we know it. The only good alternative for consoles at this point would be the Battlefield Bad Company series, and while I wasn't too impressed with the multiplayer in the BFBC2 demo or even BFBC, I'll probably buy the game sooner or later.

I think activision needs to learn from their mistakes, remember Harmonix...Guitar Hero 1-2 are in my opinion the best on the series, made by original devs Harmonix...then it came the other devs and the only game that was ok was GH3 cuz they added a few thing like battles and new band...plus no song covers...but now...the game is a complete rip off...they sell the games for full price tag when the "games" are nothing more than additions to the series...then they tried to emulate Rock Band (by Harmonix...tale that Craptivision) with other instruments...my point is that if they add no innovation to the series is destined to fail as much as GH is doing...and DJ Hero...no comments on that XD....I have to say that AW didnt offer much new stuff either...only that it was in modern times...MW2 was another typical sequel of Activiosion where not much is improved besides graphics...

I've only played small amounts of the online, but MW2 seemed about the same online, and the single-player, while on the short side, was so epic I played it on 3 difficulties.
Also, Act. aren't making MW2 with subscriptions, they're hoping to create something worth subscribing to, whether that means v.frequent map additions, gametype additions or perhaps some kind of online multiplayer campain, no one knows yet.
Also, to the fella moaning about Guitar Hero, the new ones fail because the idea is stale, it seems rythm games can only have so much appeal before they're tired ideas, except DDR, which is epic and forever will be.
TL;DR:
1. MW2 is a damn good game.
2. Don't assume you know what the new project will be, you don't.
3. Rythm games are failing because they suck, except DDR.

Subscription based wouldnt take off. Blizzards new player accounts have remained static since 2008 for World of Warcraft... i think COD is gonna take a turn for the worse and go down hill with Call of duty being tookover and spit out new games quarterly...Good thing Battlefield isnt by Activision.. at least one decent FPS is available

I've yet to hear a valid reason why the multiplayer in MW2 is so hated.

Bugs maybe? well bugs are an unintended part of gameplay and IW works with those as they appear, so it's not valid.

No improvement over COD4? more perks, upgradeable perks, customizable killstreaks, more weapoons and weapon customization, more and bigger maps...

Short single player campaign? well COD4's campaign was short as well. Although I agree COD4's campaign was better.

I'm not hating MW2 because i hate Activision. I really liked the Single Player (and no, it's not a valid point to say the SP length is irrelevant because COD4 has the same length..), but Multiplayer sucked hard (compared to BF:BC1 or the BF:BC2 Demo (kudos to the guys who aren't able to aim and end up wasting a clip on 1 guy)). + there is the annoying DLC... I don't like paying 5 Bucks for 2 Maps.

I refuse to buy any game that has a subscription fee. I condemn all such games to failure, and boycott them. I'll continue to buy competitor's products depending on which one gives me what I want, and screw anyone that wants to make me pay monthly. Cod MW2 is great, but it could be the last good cod game, i will probably turn to battlefield series and see what Zampella and West create on their next project. There's so many competing fps games that you are foolish to think your product will succeed when introducing ridiculous fees.
