1. Activision hate is a bit too strong, says co-founder
2. On the subject of Guitar Hero

Miller also touched on the issue of the Guitar Hero franchise's recent demise, which he attributes to the transition of the video game industry from physical retail distribution to deigital distribution. Activision announced during its most recent earnings call that it was shelving the popular rhythm game franchise due to licensing and hardware costs.

As Miller sees it, the Guitar Hero franchise was more deeply affected by the shift to digital distribution due to its reliance on its proprietary guitar-shaped controllers which further drove up the price points of the series' retail releases.

"It's hard to be a game publisher, and constantly create entertaining products," he said. "Activision has actually been pretty prescient about the importance of online through the merger with Blizzard - that's the most highly-valued independent publisher now, with a stock market valuation of $13 billion as of last week, which is two or three times more than others such as Electronic Arts.

"The problems that Activision is having right now in the limited area of Guitar Hero is reflective of the massive change going on in the games industry, as it transitions from retail to electronic distribution.

"Guitar Hero specifically had a big problem in that it required pretty expensive peripheral prices to really enjoy it - and that's a much more viable sale at retail, where the peripheral can sit right next to the box. It's hard, in my opinion, to get a lot of the more casual players to spend US$ 100 for a guitar, just to play a game."

I remember Alan Miller... he programmed StarMaster for the VCS2600. I think that's one of the first titles where the picture on the back of the box looked way better than what was on the screen...

Kotick does tend to come off a bit douchey to me personally, but if you're looking for the bottom line I guess he's the man for the job.

I did not know about a hate against them... I personnally couldn't care less about their games... The only game they make that I car about is diablo 3 and I'm sorry for activision but to me, activision and blizzard are completly different company. Dislike Activision games in general, I suppose it's the "hate" they were talking about. Then they just have to make good games... trying to convince us that they are good isn't smart at all..

Let's keep one thing in mind here, Activision. You merged with Blizzard...BLIZZARD! The company that makes more money on a yearly basis than some small countries. (and people think that Nintendo has a licence to print money, ha!)

Any claim that you guys have it hard is bullshit. You have a terrible CEO, an atrocious PR department and allegedly treat your employees like crap, and that's nobody's fault but your own.

Can't tell if Activision Blizzard is a good or bad move. But I hope it means better games for all platforms. What I mean is one good game for all platforms PC, Xbox360, PS3, and so on. Not a lot of crappy games for one system and not the others.

I hate Kotick for his greediness and making Activision games so shitty.

He's the downfall of Activision.

He talks about taking risks but that is my biggest problem with Activision, the fact that they buying out smaller developers and killing off the originality that made them good and just absorbing that talent to make them little more than coding monkeys hacking away at their computers to make whatever's most profitable. I'd have no problem if Activision was smaller but the sheer size of them means they have a serious negative artistic impact on the games industry.

People hate Activision? Really? man that's news to me...

These poor guys have it so hard having the most profitable franchises in video games... It must be hard for them to charge exorbitant amounts of money for digital content... Yeah it must be so hard not being able to afford that diamond encrusted toilet... poor dudes.

You think that a company like Activision don't take any risks by developing a 100+ million dollar game and releasing it on the market? I agree with them, there are a ton of smaller publishers who would be ok if they weren't all stockholders.

Valve is, for example, not on the stock market since they're privately owned and look how well they've done. Activision is a huge game company and obviously needs to oversee their sales, but I agree on that they really do go a little too far sometimes.

The company policy is apparently to run franchises into the ground then drop them when they aren't profitable anymore due to oversaturation. I say the hate is pretty well deserved.

Did he mention how they milk a franchise to death? At 60 bucks a pop? How Kotick could care less about gamers? Give me a break. Alan Miller was a game publisher too if I remember. Accolade remember that bust? He speaks with the mouth and mind of a publisher.

last PC game published by them i bought was spider-man the movie before that was S&K collection under their AV publishing label. last console title was blur.

i know a good reason why blur failed they slapped together their online mode with no thought on how to manage players who are ruining the experince for others & @ times the online mode would crash if people with laggy connections entered or left games

The level of hate is exactly where it belongs and will remain there until Activision proves themselves otherwise.

I think the current level of hate should be increased. There just isn't enough hating in the game industry, and this is why poor games make it to market.

When they can make good games then I'll stop hating them. There's a big difference between halting projects that aren't worthwhile and canceling anything original to not even give it a chance.

They ground GH into the dirt and have no other respectable games. Then they have the nerve to ask why nobody likes them. Hmm.

You want the hate to end, make original games that are good.... Also please don't call guitar hero a good game, remove the flashy visuals and you got a game a so simple that an atari 2600 can recreate the gameplay...

Also stop with sequels, well stop sequels that are nothing more than mods or addons that still somehow have game breaking bugs and still have bad pc ports, but saying that is insult to the mods you find for fallout 3, halflife and halife 2.

Want the hate to end, stop making looking after your pockets the highest priority and make making good games a higher priority, heck look at god of war devs at how they make games and see it how it differs to yours.

I'm sure Hitler thought the same thing.

"I know several people that work there who don't have plush offices - and they try to create wonderful products."

So we are supposed to feel more compasionate that craptivision makes tones of undeserved millions from their monopoly on shit movie tie ins while also making their coders work in sweatshop conditions?

Shame people are to thick to realise the only reason they hate hitler so much is because he lost.

whats funny about it is that the americans (the people that didnt even get involved untill the last minute) dont stop going on about nazis and hitler. must be because the jewbags run the u.s now eh?

after whats going on with the muslims, maybe hitler see something in the jewish that everyone else was to blind to see.

If Hitler didn't go onto Russia and try taking over them that early, they would've succeed and the whole world would've been speaking German now.

Things didn't work out and they lost.

I think Activision has been making big mistakes for a long time and it's starting to catch up with them. It won't be long before they end up like Acclaim... BANKRUPT!

Releasing the newest Guitar Hero game with no new features when they knew damn well that Rock Band had a ton of new features was a huge mistake for one of their big ips. Seriously, RB3 had Pro mode, a new keyboard, etc.. Warriors of Rock had... a shitty looking guitar!

Rethink your business strategy and treat your developers with respect and maybe you will in return earn gamers respect.

This is the company that handed development of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 away from Ravensoft. There isn't enough hate to go around.
