2K Games explains: BioShock 2 DLC is in-disc all along |
Listed in: PS3, Xbox 360 Tags: 2K Games, bioshock 2
So, as it turns out, the Sinclair Solutions DLC for BioShock 2 was already in the disc all along. Now, while that should have been a pleasant surprise, one can't help but wonder why, if it is already included in the disc, you have to pay for it twice. A post at the official 2K forums attempts to explain.
Said the publisher's official statement:
"I noticed there was a bit of confusion about our Sinclair Solutions Tester Pack file size, and I wanted to clear things up for you. The way our engine and game structure works is that people need to have the exact same content for people to play together.
One of the challenges with post launch content for MP is that it can split the player base, and we want to avoid that whenever possible. For this content, creating the DLC package the way we did allowed for us to not split the player base – so whether you purchase the new content or not, you can still play with your friends.
I know some of you have strong beliefs about DLC, and I'm not here to sway your opinion or convince you to buy our stuff - if you like what we're offering, I hope you get it and enjoy it. If it's not your speed, enjoy BioShock 2 as we released it.
I want to let you know that DLC is not interfering with our patching capabilities, which are a top priority and are still being actively worked on. We're committed to supporting you and making BioShock 2 the best experience possible.
I hope this clears up a lot of the questions and confusion in this thread!"
And there you have it. Are you sold with their explanation?

i dont see how its any different to shareware.
you download the whole program and only a trail verson is accessible until you pay for a key to unlock it. really, how is this any different.
you paid for the original content only, whether its on the disc or not, the part you pay extra for is still extra content.
anyhow, id say hackers would probably be able to unlock it without the unlock key before long.

No, it doesn't makes sense at all. Syncing players with different content is accomplished by player and servers reporting what resources they have while matching and does not require any central server for that. First problems of such type were resolved in original Doom in fscking 1993! And from that age almost every major engine already provides methods to resolve this. BioShock is created on Unreal Engine which was tailored for online experience from the times of the first Unreal Tournament (1999) and explicitly had support for different content on server and players. Please, don't tell me that 10 years later it SUDDENLY! stopped working until you mix in a few dollars from every player first.

anyway the real problem is that this content was not downloadable and was not available at a significantly later date than the release of the full game. it was on the disc. simple as that.
I understand that the developers sometimes finish a game and immediately start working on dlc but this is different they have actually had the time to code it into the disc.
My view is whatever is on the game disc when i purchase it is mine.

Without the key and having the DLC, you are being ripped off. Under the interpretation of "lemon law" this would be a criminal act.

Windows does the same, you want ultimate instead of home basic, pay. The features are on disk.
The problem is that the dlc is a standard procedure for any software company nowadays. You already have to pay 70€ for a game, plus the dlc, it doesn't come cheap.

Think of it that way:
You pay for the internet don't you?
is everything on it yours? Do you have access to everything freely wafter paying that monthly fee?
their excuse is lamentable though.
