bioshock2-2So, as it turns out, the Sinclair Solutions DLC for BioShock 2 was already in the disc all along. Now, while that should have been a pleasant surprise, one can't help but wonder why, if it is already included in the disc, you have to pay for it twice. A post at the official 2K forums attempts to explain.

Said the publisher's official statement:

"I noticed there was a bit of confusion about our Sinclair Solutions Tester Pack file size, and I wanted to clear things up for you. The way our engine and game structure works is that people need to have the exact same content for people to play together.

One of the challenges with post launch content for MP is that it can split the player base, and we want to avoid that whenever possible. For this content, creating the DLC package the way we did allowed for us to not split the player base – so whether you purchase the new content or not, you can still play with your friends.

I know some of you have strong beliefs about DLC, and I'm not here to sway your opinion or convince you to buy our stuff - if you like what we're offering, I hope you get it and enjoy it. If it's not your speed, enjoy BioShock 2 as we released it.

I want to let you know that DLC is not interfering with our patching capabilities, which are a top priority and are still being actively worked on. We're committed to supporting you and making BioShock 2 the best experience possible.

I hope this clears up a lot of the questions and confusion in this thread!"

And there you have it. Are you sold with their explanation?

Quit crying about this already. Only little babies cry about DLC being on the disc already.

they could of just gave us a padded 50mb file or something like that which served no purpose what so ever and when applied, just deleted itself and there'd be no complaining what so ever. Shifty sure, but it would stop the bitchin.

So either they have even more DLC hidden on the disc or there will be no more DLC similar to the testers pack. Unless they want to split the players.

Their explanation is a crock. That's the exact same kind of hurdle that can easily be jumped with a patch. Don't make me pay for content that I literally already have BEFORE I EVEN OPEN THE BOX!

Other companies don't do this because their DLC is either just maps or single player stuff. They are adding new elements to the online, something that would restrict people without the content from playing at all. As to why they weren't implemented in the first place is anyones guess.

DLC = DOWNLOADABLE Content.

I'm confused on the download part in his logic.

Yeah, that reason is stupid. I think they are just trying to get as much money out of the game as possible.

"We want your money, we were too lazy to deal with your issues and complaints that matchmaking will be slower and less stable. Deal with it and, did I mention that we want your money?"

I think that is it.

i dont see how its any different to shareware.
you download the whole program and only a trail verson is accessible until you pay for a key to unlock it. really, how is this any different.
you paid for the original content only, whether its on the disc or not, the part you pay extra for is still extra content.
anyhow, id say hackers would probably be able to unlock it without the unlock key before long.

It's different from shareware because you don't pay for shareware twice. If you downloaded some shareware but they charged you $60 to download it, you would probably be pissed off to find out that they are gonna charge you $10 more to unlock the full version.

# Dumbest excuse ever.Anhmeister 2010-03-14 00:15
Many games patch in DLC as needed and only unlock them if you buy it. Uncharted 2 for example, has plenty of new character skins, these skins are patched in prior to their release and whether or not you have them or not, you can see others running around with them. The split player base only happens when maps are introduced and since this has nothing like that, that argument is null.

DLC is a bullshit scheme to leech more money out of people, issues like this happening again and again just further prove this point

tl;dr: from tech standpoint you were fed pure bullshit. Longer version below.

No, it doesn't makes sense at all. Syncing players with different content is accomplished by player and servers reporting what resources they have while matching and does not require any central server for that. First problems of such type were resolved in original Doom in fscking 1993! And from that age almost every major engine already provides methods to resolve this. BioShock is created on Unreal Engine which was tailored for online experience from the times of the first Unreal Tournament (1999) and explicitly had support for different content on server and players. Please, don't tell me that 10 years later it SUDDENLY! stopped working until you mix in a few dollars from every player first.

what a pile of rubbish the ps3 has a game data folder that can be edited the pc installs to the hard drive any adjustments that the game required could have been made their with the same efficency as putting it on a disc.

anyway the real problem is that this content was not downloadable and was not available at a significantly later date than the release of the full game. it was on the disc. simple as that.

I understand that the developers sometimes finish a game and immediately start working on dlc but this is different they have actually had the time to code it into the disc.

My view is whatever is on the game disc when i purchase it is mine.

# DLC or notGuest 2010-03-14 12:02
DLC should be downloadable and pay for. And this DLC key should be free since the DLC was attached way ahead time. Capcom pull it on RE5 upon release with their key and multiplayer mode. It is only fair when a developer doesn't include the DLC in the first place along with the key.
Without the key and having the DLC, you are being ripped off. Under the interpretation of "lemon law" this would be a criminal act.

I don't see why this is a problem. You want more features, you pay for them. They are just trying to maximize their profit, just like any other company. It is just as stupid as paying for some kind on crap for farmville.
Windows does the same, you want ultimate instead of home basic, pay. The features are on disk.
The problem is that the dlc is a standard procedure for any software company nowadays. You already have to pay 70€ for a game, plus the dlc, it doesn't come cheap.

That's absolutely ridiculous. This means all of the future DLC for this game is already on the disc. That's fucking ridiculous. It's bullshit that the game must have all the content before playing. There's absolutely no reason it can't get the new data from the other players, when needed. I truly hope the Windows version gets cracked.

halo wars is one for a sad matchmaking since it chooses maps @ random instead of a voting system or a leader. only good dlc is the addition of new game modes

You can still play multiplayer without the recent DLC, and still play with your friends...obviously you can't use the skins or play the two maps that come with it. The DLC wasn't an unlock key and I think the BS2 explaination just doesn't cut it. Or maybe I'm approaching this wrong?

I agree disc based content whichmust be paid sepperastely is wrong.

Think of it that way:
You pay for the internet don't you?

is everything on it yours? Do you have access to everything freely wafter paying that monthly fee?

their excuse is lamentable though.

Most of you don't seem to realize that according to the law, you don't own the data on the disk.
