Not so much a news report, but more of a clarification of game mechanics. That's the theme for this World of Warcraft forums segment we'll be mentioning, which discusses an accidental item deletion incident.

According to the thread, Maralis (the thread starter) reports that the problem started during a Sethekk instance on April 29, 10 pm (server time) when Malaris accidentally deleted the Shattered Halls key from his inventory while trying to make room for loot.

Maralis did not realize that the key was gone until May 1 (yesterday), and upon requesting a reinstatement of the item, was told by Blizzard is was "not recoverable."

Here were (Blizzad spokesman) Vrakthris' words on the matter:

One of the major factors involved on if we are able to restore an item is if it is currently available for restoration. Many items remain available for restoration for awhile but not all of them do; unfortunately the Shattered halls key had a very limited life span and it is no longer available for restoration.

I am sorry, Maralis, if you believe that we should be able to restore an item regardless of the time frame involved or even if there should be an option to acquire a new key it would be best to post that in our Suggestion Forums.

We imagine guys who have had similar accidents as Maralis will find this reply will clarify some of the game's policies on item recovery. Let this be a lesson - always check what you're clicking on before sending it on its way.

What was the key doing in his bags anyway, i think thats a little dodgey. As soon as u get the key it goes to the key ring not to a bag slot, and the key ring is unlimited cause theres so many keys to get now.

I'd like to be able to buy (maybe thru a gnomish constortium type) an "insurance" policy to super bind many items to me... to make them impossible to delete vendor etc without a long cooling off period ...maybe 5 days or a week before i got procedes....

so if i were going to sell an "insured" piece of armor or epic weapon, or shard it i would like do it once now and need to re-confirm in a week and only get the shard or the money then...maybe not have the item in the interim so i'd have a chance to notice it missing too and a confirmation mail 1 day before it became permananent.

I know im going to accidently vendor some irreplaceable quest item one of these days and stress and write a tickect etc and really waste a bunch of time by something that could be handled with essentially a toggle switch basically saying... "elect to never sell this item" (or only do so in an ex*****ive and time consuming protective way)
