Why do players choose Alliance as their WoW faction?

Why choose Alliance as your WoW faction? - Image 1Being a horde player in Blizzard's World of Warcraft, I was really intrigued by this thread on WoW forums asking why players rolled Alliance. To be honest, some of the answers surprised even cynical old me. Here's a list of answers that we found rather amusing.
  • I always roll human in any rpg. -Magicmissle
  • Hey, I was young and naive, ok? -Aralon
  • Because I'm a well-adjusted person who bathes regularly... which means I wouldn't fit in with the hordies. -Cartumandua
  • Habit. -Peacenik
  • You forgot "can't handle moral ambiguity." Similar, but not quite the same as "I wanted to be good." -Talakara
Of course the usual "my friends play Alliance, so I chose that..blahblahblah" generic answer was given on the thread. A few wise-cracks are to be expected as well, such as the classic "Hey, I was young and naive, ok?" Still others gave some very interesting insight on why people actually chose the Alliance. It seems that a lot of players chose the faction because they always choose Human characters. Now, what's funny is that we find some people chose the Horde side out of habit as well. (I always choose the side with the cool-looking monsters etc.)

Another interesting note is the concept of morality that came into play when choosing a character. Quite a few players decided to roll for that side because they believe that this is where the good guys are. A misconception if I do say so myself. Anyway, one answer I expected to find but wasn't there was the fact that one side or the other has more players. I don't know, but with all the complaints on ganking, I'd expect that some would choose their side based on that.

Based on the answers, choosing a faction for a lot of people is not about efficiency or which side is currently dominating. It's about having fun while playing the game.

Well the reason as to why more people go with the alliance is rather simple... The way WoW is portrayed on commercials or on the internet (to the people who dont know that much) is that the Alliance is the good guys, and the horde are the bad guys. Just imagine the word alliance is much more apealing then the word Horde already... Also not to mention that until BC the horde had no appealing looking characters, people tend to bond easily to characters that they can imagine themselfs as, and its hard to imagine myself as a big COW, or a undead somthing.... Also, everytime you see the commercial's for WoW what do you see a good 75% of the commercial? Alliance characters fighting the horde, but you see it from the Alliance's point of view... Thus you are hooked into the game ALREADY wanting what you saw on TV/internet which incidently was ALLIANCE. Also, while your on any faction, you will notice one faction bashing the other... So when the noobs who just came into WoW on the alliance side, because of the commercials hear all the bashing being done onto the horde, they immediatly assume the worse about the horde, thus adding to the number of alliance population... Also when they try the alliance for 20 lvls they try the horde out, and since they are familar with alliance and the quests, they say the hell with the horde imma go back to the good guys im familiar with... And by the time they figure out horde aint so bad, (around lvl 35-ish) its to late because i dont wanna start from scratch to go to the horde, f' that... ALSO, alot of people will say ohh, but the people on alliance get there friends so thats why they roll alliance as well, but how did those 'friends' get influenced into getting into WoW anyway.... Thats the answer to the question in a nutshell..

Peace, Ritter. Thunderhorn baby.

It was pretty much set from the moment I saw the WoW trailer. Look like a walking cow? Umm no. Look like a corpse, an ogre or orc? No, not going to happen. I basically went for the side that didn't have all the ugly mean faces.

At different points I've tried out a hordeling (usually when my server was down forcing me to use another) but it never felt right. In each case I could not embrace the darkside and it felt like I was an undercover spy for the Alliance. What would really be cool, considering Blizzard already has some in-disguise quests, is if the devs made it so that you could attack the opposing faction while disguised as one of them.

Now I know there's some little trinket that can disguise you as the opposing faction but apparently it leaves your name in red so you still get spotted. That's no fun. There should be a completely undetectable disguise that lets you walk right in as if you're one of them and kill. Oh and it should only be usable by Alliance players MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA HA!
