Official Genesis emulator coming to App Store next month

There are quite a few emulated Genesis games floating around on the App Store. These usually come as a ROM-and-emulator package, and now Sega is moving to make its App Store presence even more visible with Ultimate Genesis, an official Genesis emulator that also serves as a sort of virtual console platform.

 

Ultimate Genesis is a free app that not only emulates Genesis games but also lets you purchase them straight from the app itself. It's slated to go live in early February and will come with one game: Space Harrier II. There are other games already available, though, namely:

 

  • Sonic the Hedgehog (US$ 5.99)
  • Golden Axe (US$ 4.99)
  • Ecco the Dolphin (US$ 2.99)
  • Shining Force (US$ 2.99)

Sega'll probably churn out more Genesis games once this emulator's out. I hope they include some Phantasy Star titles.

I wonder how easy it would be to get custom roms by simply replacing the images in the ipa or in the game folder?

Game folder will not be available as iPhone doesn't mount as a drive. Even using something like FTP is daunting and the IPAs aren't edittable as far as I know. I'd look elsewhere for emulation... (Unles you wanna buy each rom)

Daistaar, IPAs are editable, trust me ;-), and via ssh and so on there should be some new games to add :D
