Commodore 64 emulator for iPhone regains BASIC support |
Listed in: iPhone, iPad Tags: emulator
Now that Apple has loosened its grip on the iOS SDK agreement, Manomio went for a major update for the C64 emulator on the App Store. The update, v2.0, sought to re-enable the app's BASIC function that was removed back in November. Wouldn't you know it? Apple has now approved the changes and is now available for download.
Now that BASIC is back, so is the on-screen keyboard. It won't be much different from the last time you saw it, but games that needed specific commands will once again be playable. It still lacks a few keys on it, so an update is expected to follow to resolve the problems.
Further down the road, the app will be updating to cycle-exact emulation on newer hardware (ARMv7) to fix sound issues and enable a few more free games to run on the program.
Developer Stuart Carnie is also optimistic that with the return of BASIC, a full-experience iPad version can also be attained in the future.

All those games you can PAY for from within the app? You don't have to pay for them. They are already in the game as ZIP files. Just go in and unzip them then put the resulting folder in the DOCUMENTS/GAMES folder and poof! You got the game.
If you want to play any of your own roms then find a game that has FULL USE of the joystick and replace the GAMENAME.D64 or GAMENAME.T64 file with your own file then your C64 game will play instead. But you might also have to delete the savestate file for that game first.
I discovered all this because their newest update wouldn't work at all to download the free games. It would just crash and dump me back to the springboard. So I investigated why since I never heard back from the a-holes. I then discovered all this good stuff.
