Apple has finally issued a public statement regarding numerous reports of reception problems on the iPhone 4, saying that the problem is simply software related and a fix will soon be available that will "make your signal bars more accurate." According to the company's statement:

"Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place."

"To fix this, we are adopting AT&T’s recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone’s bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see."

"We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G."

"We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same— the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused."

Finally, Apple also notes that if you are not fully satisfied with the iPhone 4, "you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund."

No I think what was happening was the phone calculated bad bars and thus dropped the call.

However I am skeptical and you may be right :)

you see, apple once again trying to fool it's customers. They made the phone look like it has more strength.

that formula thing is BS, that's something the 1st gen iphone would have back in 2007.

Fake but honest apple rep translator:
Upon investigation, we were stunned that our product was deemed acceptable for mass production despite the obvious hardware issue.
Currently the signal strength display makes it completely obvious that we focused more on aesthetics than performance. We can't have that, it's not supposed to be THAT obvious. To address the issue, we're not actually going to fix the problem, we're just going to make an update that changes the way the signal is displayed. We think that'll be a clever enough way to make it look like we're hearing our customers without actually listening to them. Hopefully, they'll start blaming their area of service instead of our product for the bad reception despite being just fine with other phones.
This software update will be free of charge considering the fact that fixing the actual problem would cost us way more money.
We've gone through testing of this product and the results are the same-- the iPhone 4's performance is the best we've ever shipped of the 4th generation iphone! Just don't compare it to other designs.

what is the fix it does not fix the low or no recept problem.., tell me please how was all the ppl tat make the video go low recept? all over the place ? so every corner u go have no recept? the word "ACCURATE" is just a diversion tat make us think that the reception of iphone have no problem

let me ask all iphone 4 user do u all get the no signal on the top or searching for signal at the signal bar corner? when u hold ur iphone in the way they describe ? if so and if all of u are having the no signal how is the new version firmware or software going to fix it? basically it a hardware issue~

i have to say a hardware issue will never be fix by a software "more Accurate" is just a words of diversion.

if iphone 4 user can ans this question "do most or all of u get the no signal at the top" while u hold ur iphone 4 in the describe way.

if so, all of u are getting the same issue, and because not every one is in a low reception area, how is tat true of the apple can fix with the more accurate software as they said?

example:
example1:
not accurate software
actual bar on iphone is 5
actual accuratecy is 2
so accuracy on iphone 4 should show accuracy of 2 (After Software Fix) and not 0 due to signal cannot get thru

so if u still get a 0 and u are sure if u are in a high reception area after software fix tat is basically a software issue

"displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength"

So when it shows as 1 or 2 bars with a hand gripped around, it means it actually has NO signal?

Nice try Apple.

lol. one way to test this theory is to take your iphone 3gs and your iphone 4 and compare the signal bars on each device in a given area. Look at the phone 3gs's signal strength and look at the iphone 4's signal strength. If the iphone 3gs's signal shows 3 bars, and the iphone 4 shows full bars, then you know that this statement is accurate.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYONE ADMITTED TO THE MENTAL HOSPITAL FOR LAUGHING UNCONTROLLABLY.

Without investigations, we were already aware that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally right. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as much as 5 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with average signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 1 or no bars at all. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were dropped with the retarded design of the iPhone 4."

"To really f*** up this, we are adopting some guy's recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone’s bars will report it far less accurately, fooling users into thinking that the reception they will get in a given area never drops. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see."

"We will issue a free anti-jailbreak update within a few weeks that incorporates the fake formula. Even though this retarded design has NOT been present in the original iPhone(s), this anti-jailbreak update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G."

"Since we are too selfish and lazy to retest everything, we assume that the results are the same — the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the sh*ttiest we have ever shipped, as in iPhones, not other mobile devices. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more f***ed up. For those who have had concerns, we don't care.

Since the clients are willing to spend loads of money on your products, Apple, at least use high quality not low budget.

iPhone 2 to 3G and 3GS are pretty good with JailBrake, can't talk about iPhone 4 because I've never used it, but it's almost the same but it's problematic.
