battle2Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will not have access to a developer console at all. How sure are we about this? As sure as game dev Johan Anderson's tweet is: "No Console."

This message was tweeted some hours ago on (where else) Twitter, which then led to some fiery exchange over at the official EA forums. It was so heated taht DICE had to say something about it officially and join in on the thread.

"We have not removed a console from BC2. The simple reason is that BC1 and BC2 never have had an in-game console. Which also means that the game won't be possible to hack in this regard."

It's not surprising at all whythe game's followers reacted so shocked upon hearing the news. After all, this is the first time in the Battlefield series to not have a dev console on PC. It's not really a must-have per se, but fans do have it on their sure-want. The game devs, however, are saying that they're doing this to avoid the proliferation of cheating in the game.

I forgot that this was going to be on PC too, I'm buying it for PS3.

But no, I never use consoles so it's not a problem.

we get the game at around £25 while console is atleast £40 so I think it's still worth purchasing even without the console. If it's anything like modern warfare the console will eventually get cracked. :zzz

i am thinking again about getting it, without a console it generally means no demos and with no demos u cant match it (unless they are server side, but then u cant see aiming). also having no console will make admining a server alot harder or more time consuming.

i dont get that u cant hack it ether as only cheats that they build in work so if they removed wireframe there wouldent be any console hacks other than FOV but that can be changed in a config typically

They are lying, if it didn't have a dev console it would make testing the game difficult. Never heard of a game without some form of console. Either way, I don't understand why they would disable it. Its really useful for admin commands like kick, vote, etc..

Testing a game does not really require a developer's console. The developer's console is actually used to debug a game. But with the existence of development kits(PC and Consoles -console use debug units), you can debug a game running in debug mode anyway, so there's no need for developer's console.

I guess the reason to avoid cheating is what you can only say as their reason. As for kicking and voting, some games either map this to keys/buttons or just put the commands at the pause menu. And there are also some developer's console that does not do anything all except logging messages from game events.

Personally, it does not bother me(especially if the developers are going to put a useless console). What I do want though, is a way to tweak a game(FOV, bobcycle, display refresh rates). I don't care if they all throw it in a pause menu or some other method.

Dice already cinfirmed that we won't be hosting our own servers and the server files will not be made public, so there's another reason why the console won't be available on PC.

I'm pretty sure custom mods/content have been ruled out of the PC version too.

Dont need a dev console. They are more or less right that it just gets used for people trying to cheat.

Any options will hopefully be tweakable in a ini or simply through an in game menu. That'd be fine with me.

If not, then we have some issues. I'd rather not that Activision-style neuter a game for no reason.

People who really want to cheat will do it reguardless.

The devs can easily prevent console cheats by using a cheats enabled command for the host.

People are upset is because the console is considered a basic along with dedicated servers and mods.

Here's another FPS game I won't be getting out of principle. I'm sure it'll be fun, but they just keep stripping or leaving stuff out that I consider a necessity in this type of game.

Seriously, what the hell "Big Game Companies"?

Do we have dedicated servers? And server-side console just for the server?

lol... No dev console. That´s like a cheeseburger without cheese. Just a crapy Burger... So i hope for the community, that the hackers will open the code 4 editing the ini. Thats almost the same like dev console :)

I don't see how it could be used to cheat considering the fact that the cheats need to be server side, and the console really doesn't have the capability to do that. Sure, there are ways to inject information into the console, but that's what anti-cheats, and anything else along those lines, are for.

In Battlefield 2, the console was the most useful thing ever. Now it's gone.
