Newell: Gordon Freeman to remain the same in next Half-Life

Gordon Freeman is the quintessential silent hero: he never talks. He'd rather have his gravity gun or his trusty crowbar do all the talking for him, and Valve says that's the way he's gonna stay in the next Half-Life.

Valve boss Gabe Newell recently told Edge that while the studio isn't opposed to the idea, gamers can most likely expect Gordon to remain the strong and silent type.

"We're not philosophically opposed to this, but we don't have any good reasons to do it," he said. "Right now making your companions more interesting and compelling seems a more fruitful avenue to explore."

Newell also noted that Valve will be sticking to the image of Gordon most familiar to Half-Life players: an arm and a weapon.

"We haven't had a reason to change that. Most of what I've seen to date has been gimmicky and is entertaining for just a minute or so," he said.

An arm and a weapon... they really aren't kidding. If you play around with the console commands in HL2 on the PC and pull the camera back from a first person view to a third... the only thing modeled is the arms and weapon they're holding. There IS no Gordon freeman.

Realistically, the only time we've actually seen him is in the spin off games (again PC) Opposing Force and Blue Shift where he makes tiny cameos that correspond to the first game's story line and events. Less of course you count the older multiplayer bits.

Um, no, that's complete bullshit. He's fully modeled.

No it's not complete bullshit, he's right. The reason being that it's stupid to model something that won't be visible.

However, hush404 makes it seem like it's a bad thing when it's the opposite.

It's a common thing in every single FPS created, you never have anything other than a gun and an arm for the camera view.

Gordon is not modeled on the PC versions of Half-life 2 or any of the episodes. Play Garry's mod and see for yourself the only models of Gordon for the source engine is in Half-life Source or user made models.
