Motomu Toriyama still interested in FFVII remake

Square Enix's Yohinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama may think that an HD remake of Final Fantasy VII is a humongous undertaking, but that doesn't mean they don't want to have a crack at it. Well, Toriyama anyway. The Final Fantasy XIII director recently expressed interest in such a project.

“I’m really interested to see this more complete form of Final Fantasy VII portrayed more realistically with the voice and animation and all the suttle expressions there,” he told GameTrailers. “I’d be interested to see that and to make that, it would be a great experience. I don’t get tired of people asking that question, so I’ll continue to answer my thoughts as long as people keep asking.”

You can hear more of Toriyama's thoughts in the video below. The remake part starts at around the 4:20 mark.

Do we want devs to just rehash old games? No. Do we want them to rehash FFVII? Yes!

My favorite game in the mgs series is "Twin Snakes" which is a rehash of the first mgs. It's the same game with the same story but with updated graphics and gameplay. If FFVII got that treatment, I would be all over it.

Besides, it seems like Square's going downhill on the new games. Can't judge XIII yet, but X was just good (instead of great like earlier ones) and I got bored less than halfway through XII and quit. So maybe a rehash will be better.

X was okay, admit it! If you played it (if you didn't then just shut up) you must have felt like "WOW IT SEEMS SO REAL" even if later it turned into "wow they're so lame, those characters" xD But hey, I liked the VIII more than the the VII so maybe I'm not a real ff fan, worth listening to xD

I have no interest in buying a remake of FFVII myself, but it should be interesting to see how it looks like using new tech can.

Isn't this like the 3rd time someone from square-enix is interested in making ff7 remake? I've never played it, but I have played ff7 crisis core, dissidia and watched the movie. I liked them. I would definitely would like to see a remake.

I don't find the new FF that's coming out that compelling. I just can't take a black guy, with afro that has bird in his hair, too seriously. Althought i might be wrong. I'll have to try it out.

FF12 was just lame. The gameplay was good, i agree. The storyline was good, i highly disagree. Storyline was just way too horrible. Did anyone really take any of the characters from that game seriously? bleh

Yeah, it was way more serious and hardcore when they had a girl band saving the world....i'd put my money on the spice girls anyday...

That said, I quit playing FF after VII...fuck gunswords and girl bands....

With the new one, I think I can handle a black dude with a chicken in his afro.....because the fighting and graphics seem top notch...we will see about the rest of the drama crap tho...

I doubt FFXIII is comparable to CoD

How the hell can you compare an RPG to an FPS like CoD?

# why notGuest 2010-02-15 16:09
If they can afford to add a team to work on the remake then they might as well. I think they should just so news about the ff7 remake stops showing up all the time. :P They may also be able to make money off of it, but you know they don't care about that... :-*

The whole basis for the remake is voices and humanoid forms instead of blobs. No one will ask for a remake of the remake, that is not how things work.

SE really should just get the project under way because it will make them plenty of money and make their fans happy.

The backgrounds in ff VII are ok, but man the character models are asstacular.

A remake would be great, especially since there are so many ppl that have never played it, yet call themselves FF fans....

On that note, they should also remake FF III (or VI depending where you are) Kefka in 3D would be amazing....

With all this talk, it will happen eventually. I just hope they aren't digging the games grave, considering Squares most recent games being less than worth while.

OMG why don't they just do it, Its really tiring hearing them think about it all the time, If they do it all the fans that want the remake will shut up, if they dont do it people will nag and they will forever be talking about how they are thinking of a remake thus pissing off more people.

I actually wouldn't mind a remake. Don't like it, don't buy it! Capcom remade Dead Rising for the Wii, it sucked, I didn't buy it, no problem. People complain about Guitar Hero milking their customers (it's true!) all the time, but people still buy it. You don't like that? Don't buy it. Applies in this case too

People see FFVII as like the flagship game in the Squeenix catalogue and every new game people hope it's gonna be as good as that, but with the games they been squeezing out lately they'd just end up throwing features from new games into it and won't come close to matching the original, anyway it's the story that makes it good and new RPG's really haven't changed at all in over 10 years so why bother ruining the memory.

trying to play the original kinda ruins the memory for me... you either emulate it or pay way too much for a 12yr old game. and then you have to deal with the old graphics and other limitations of the tech at the time.

like you said, it's the story. it's like giving a rusted classic car a tune up and paint job doesn't ruin it... now try changing the engine and yeah you've ruined it.

i'd love to see today's kids excited about FF7...

why would playing the original ruin the memory? I love to play the original because it revives the memory and solidifies it being one of the greats I don't liken the game to being a rusted classic I see it as a mint condition classic. I don't think today's generation would know enough to care about FFVII they weren't either born or were too young to experience the game I find it sad really that people don't appreciate unaltered classics because they find themselves agreeing or disagreeing for the sake of and not from replaying the game for the fact that playing the very game this topic is about is hard to do I find that being hypocritical if you can't enjoy the originals how do you expect yourself or anyone else to enjoy the remake as well? Since your expectations would be a vague representation of a ten year old memory

For the love of God, take Nike's advice and just remake the graphics. Cause on the real, that's what everybody is really focussing on.

Exactly, Just the graphics and a few teaks to the combat system.

Nothing major, just aesthetic differences, like holding square to make the HUD disappear for those that enjoy watching the summoning à la FF-IX.

Although with the higher resolution that probably wouldn't be necessary

And for the love of god do not make the battle system like Crisis Core or any other new FF game.

Oh yes, and bring on Nobuo Uematsu to modernize his music. It's almost always a let down to hear someone else's "interpretation" of already great music.

To the Guy who compared CoD to FF... just WTF? They aren't even comparable... Not only are they not in the same Genre, They're not even made in by the same 'Ethnic Group' Seriously a war game compared to an rpg... People these days That's like comparing a rock to a Bird. One's inanimate and can be skipped, the other is a breathing animal and can fly. EXACTLY There is no comparison. >.>

I was just playing FF7 again like for the 17? times? just got out of Midgard...

Well, I positively believe they going to do it.

But when? thats the question.

When they see the red arrow of the earning chart going down like an escalator. Thats probably they'll pull out their life line like "RE-make of FF7"

Seriouly I havent enjoy playing a FF game ALL the WAY to the end since X...

They Better pull out their big gun soon otherwise, I'll saves a lot of $$$$ years to come....LOL...! :P

How can you ruin a game that came out 10 years ago?

It's Literally impossible. The game happened already, the people who played it then remember how epic it was. You cannot remake a game with the same magic as the original cause it was a different time period and it literally blew everyone away of what the PS1 could do.

Stop being whiny little fools and accept a remake and move on. You're all going to buy it anyway either for trophies or if you're fans of SE or FF7 and it'll be a massive success.
