GameStop: Publishers can make money on used games through DLC

GameStop has something to say to publishers losing money due to used game sales: "Partner with us and we'll both make money."

The idea is to entice publishers to pacrticipate in GameStop's used games business by providing the store with DLC for popular used titles. It's what GameStop CEO Dan DeMatteo calls "a win-win situation for publishers, retailers and consumers."

Right now, publishers are giving gamers opportunities to download exclusive content if they buy brand new games, but DeMatteo thinks it doesn't work.

"Through our years in the used business, we have learned that the second-hand user is a value-oriented consumer... we don't believe that a US$ 10 add-on piece of DLC is compelling to a used game buyer," he said.

Late last year, GameStop started positioning itself as a DLC retailer by announcing plans to sell downloadable content in-store starting this year. DeMatteo says this initiative is a good thing for publishers who do end up partnering with them.

"We can market and execute DLC sales right in-store," he says. "There's a tremendous opportunity for us to encourage software developers and publishers to create DLC because we'll be able to market it. It's very difficult to discover, find... add-on content with the tools available [currently]."

It's very difficult to discover, find... add-on content with the tools available [currently].

Really? Is it really that hard?

No its not

SEE THAT BIG FLASHING BANNER, AND DIALOGUE BOX WHICH APPEARS YOU GO TO PLAY THE GAME

that has got to be the worst marketing sentence ive seen this year

DLC has either been about squeezing every last penny out of a consumer for meaningless garbage or character outfits that could have been fit on the original disc or allowing lazy devs to fix bugs they should have fixed the first three times the game was QA'd before going to press.

The industry should be backing off of this type of activity as it allows for laziness and makes it all that harder to put up the front that they care about making games and shows how much more they care about money.

Games these days are expensive enough as it is, now they want to tack on $20+ for features they conveniently "left out" from the original discs.

With all the retarded errors people are having over both HD consoles on the market they should be shying away from stuff stored on a system you're shipping off for repair to have DLC lost and focusing more on keeping as much on the original game disc as possible.

Sooo basically perfection should be achieved before you even heard about the game

Come into the real world
Also game balancing etc is a very very difficult thing to do, and should be continuously worked on

If you dont want to buy dlc, then dont no-ones forcing you

as for patching theyre free, and nothing is perfect particularly software (given the amount of shortcuts required to get something at a decent fps)

I'm in the real world. In this real world I expect a finished game for $60, not something rushed out the door unfinished because develops are trying to make room for their next projects, and in some cases, things coded then pulled out before release so they can be sold as a ripoff add-on

I don't think it's unrealistic to expect my money's worth and for devs to stop relying on "we can do it later when enough people complain" fixes that run off of hard drives when half of the 360's made don't have hard drives.

I don't care personally though, All of these issues I've dealt with because my friends bought console games and they've bitched about them and I've discovered they had many valid points.

Go ahead and be a smart ass to me and take what I wrote totally out of context, you'll be the one someday paying an extra $20+ for the rest of your game.

If I buy a car, I expect it to move. If i buy a house, I expect it not to fall apart. If i buy food, I expect it to taste good. If i buy a phone, I expect it to work.

I'm sure you would have the EXACT expectations when purchasing any product. What makes video games any different?

No, shut up, you can't defend selling used games. I don't blame them because it's a massive profit, but honestly it's almost like piracy, in that the devs don't make a profit off it. Well, they do on the initial sale, but that's it.

Lol how much did these douches above me get paid to post here? You sound like the people in the insurance companies pay to show up in town hall meetings and complain about universal health care.

DLC will not solve the problem because publishers are greedy. If you wait a year they will most definitely release a version of the game that contains all the DLC.

You guys might not like GameStop but you need to realize that whatever crap the publishers start pulling to kill gamestop used sales is also going to kill:

1. selling your games yourself.
2. trading your games.
3. RENTING GAMES.

Im a big renter

id always rent then buy, and some times i dont need to buy the game as its online is pathetic

BUT we have to let the industry explore, new things, you never know what they may find

Selling the games at any given time is a rip-off when it comes to selling it to Gamestop.

It's better to sell games to friends or online. Both you and the person that you're selling the game to will benefit.

End of story.

Gamestop will defend this to death with everything in their power...of course they got more than a billion dollars in revenue from used games only, what a shame.

most car companies if you buy a used car, the company gets no royalties. So i guess to be fair, you had better buy a new car off an official dealer so that these poor bankrupt car companies can get there share. Is that Mr. Rockerfeller? ;-)

things like this support piracy, lets look at Bad Company 2 since its the most recent that comes to mind

you get vip for free
and you get Squad rush for free if you preordered
and you got some items early if you bought it limited edition

realistically, the limited edition stuff outside of 1 item is easily obtained with 3 hours of game time... hardly making this a useful add on not to mention most of those things people already have since there was no standard so it made it all pointless

squad rush was free on all discs in EU, and its not even mentioned how others will get it will it be VIP based or everyone based... reguardless anyone can play on it if invited so there is nothing special here

the VIP content, is 4 maps so far 2 of which arnt out, and of what we got its on the disc, its proof when you enter your code you can play on them... and or maybe since their on the disc and the game randomly uses these maps assuming you have the content you can play on them via that but reguardless its on the disc, not to mention they dont add anything for death match or anything new their just ported maps...

finally the dr. pepper promo stuff was said to come out the 8th, then the 18th and now its delayed again... with all the promos and DLC this game has had its become BS after BS for it, and these is how most DLC is seen its also hard to price it fairly but in the end this move will push people twords piracy over DLC buys

I wanted to buy fallout 3 gotyed. yes im not the fastest to buy new games...anyway

I called "gs" to purchase a copy. They said they had one copy, I asked if they could hold it for me cause I lived a ways away and it would take me an hour to drive there. they said yes and took my name.

After driving an hour I reached their store and asked for the game. I was handed an open dvd case with no paper cover. I was then asked to pay 49.99 full retail. I had no idea why it would be opened and missing the cover so I asked the guy.

He said it was a display so it was opened, and if I wanted to give it as a gift he could seal it back up for me.
first I told him it was for a gift and that I would not give a gift -especialy a pc game- that had been opened with the serial for him to see or anyone for that matter. he reasserted that it was for display only and it was no big deal.

I almost punched the dummy in his head, but instead calmly stated that I was pretty pissed that no one explained to me the condition of the game before my hour long trip.

He simply said "sir now you're making me feel bad...I'll take ten percent off the price for you. Frustrated I just held up my hands and said "you should be ashamed of your self" and walked out of the store. :sigh:

And yes this rant has absoluty nothing to do with the article.

# i had a similar experianceGuest 2010-03-19 05:37
I had a similar experiance to the above poster my local rental store MR. Movies has in it a display with the download vouchers from movies they stocked which they sell for 3 dollars a pop about the cost of renting the movie well about 80% of the titles in the bin the serial to be used was showing on the outside of the box... for anyone to see. the download keys can only be used once then they are useless. So if you could remember a 12 or 8 digit code or take a picture with your phone free movie for you and whoever comes in to buy it later is screwed.
