EA Online Pass

EA is hell-bent on making money off pre-owned game sales. They've already started with Mass Effect 2's Cerberus Network and Bad Company 2's VIP codes, and now they're expanding to their sports titles with the new Online Pass. Consumers have responded not so favorably to the announcement, but EA CEO John Riccitiello says it's a good deal not just for EA but for gamers as well.

"We think it's a great idea, we think it's going to build our business, and we think it's a positive consumer experience," said Riccitiello on the company's financial call this afternoon. "Invariably, the consumer is getting a boat load more content to experience than they otherwise would."

The Online Pass gives, among other things, multiplayer access to those who buy second-hand copies of EA Sports games for US$ 10. It's kinda like Mass Effect 2's Cerberus Network, although the latter also gives free access to extra DLC.

COO John Schappert also backed up his fellow John: "By giving people this access code, we got them into the online world," Schappert said. "We've seen a very strong uptick in downloadable content across all of those titles because we had content available on day one, and we seeded it with a bonus token of free content."

Of course EA will defend it as it'll make them money, and most gamers will just suck it and some will even try to defend it like they have done lately with a lot of other "irregular" stuff. Sad times...

He is just adding to the flames of anger here especially when he says "it's a positive consumer experience" bull****.

It's almost as if EA now want to become the number 1 a***holes in the industry again.

Although as a PC gamer, it doesn't bother me as much because it's what I am use to.

So a money-grubbing CEO knows that this is a positive consumer experience. Not the actual consumers.

This guy sounds like a clone of Rebellion's CEO. "Yeah, AVP is broken out of the box. All the console people don't mind tho!"

you do know that its just for used games right, as long as you buy it new it'll come with the redeem code, so u pay nothing.....and they just said above you'll also get more than just online- dlc for free by just buying it new

"By giving people this access code, we got them into the online world,"

Sorry, say what? Weren't we in the online world without this code?

Seriously, we're not blind and we know it's just another way for them to make more and more money.

It's not like they don't make enough money from NEW games sales as it is.

Someone should make these fools at EA look outside in to the real world every now and then.

I will never buy another game from EA until they drop this online pass shit, I even sold the old shit just recently on craigslist. Their games aren't all that great anyways.

So eat that you P.O.S. greedy CEO. What do you expect us to do with our old shit? Just throw it away and make no money? Is that what you EA people would do? I hope to see your games in the bargain bin at walmart.

The game sales will most likely decline simply for the fact that people don't like the idea. Some of the regular EA supports will still buy. However, the resale value of the game will have to be staggeringly lower than normal because people will knowing have to pay $10 for the new code. So the game itself will practially be worthless to resell for those who purchased it. In my mind that hurts the consumers who want to resell used games in great condition to buy new games. I don't think they have thought this through. They heard someone say make more money and they were sold on a stupid idea. Congrats EA on starting the spiral down to Activision's level. They already started cookie cutting game this year with the re-release of COD WWII pack and the 3 Need for Speeds. I say less game releases, better quality games, cheaper content, and updatable is the key.

yep if ea games start this shit I won't be buying, new or otherwise.
This whole dlc thing is just bollocks, they (not just ea) make a game, sell you half of it then want to charge you again for the other half, operation flashpoint's another one, why weren't the dlc missions in the (too short) original game.
Once again we're being treated like idiots

WTF does this do? What, now you pay for online and this....regardless, EA is a joke in the first place making crap games filled with ads. Great experience they brought, real great. :-x If you forget about the consumer, they forget about you. :-*

"Invariably, the consumer is getting a boat load more content to experience than they otherwise would." (With the passcode)

Right, and if that passcode was just never around, it would all be free. He's doing a horrible job even attempting to defend this. "Duh you guyz, with da passcode u get multiplayer access for 10 dollarz!" when it was totally free before.

Why is everyone getting so butthurt over all this.

It doesn't affect the average consumer, it only affects used game sales, not new. The only negative side-effect I can see is the rental copies being affected.

It's not like they are saying "buy our game new, then pay more to get online". It's buy the game new, get online included.

If online is included when you buy the game new, then online has been paid for and there is no reason to charge for it again. When you buy Mass Effect, cd key 234234-234234234-234234 from Gamestop, online has already been paid for and you are just being milked for 10 dollars.

Saying people are 'butthurt' because they are asked to pay extra for no reason is disingenuous. It may be more accurate to say EA is getting 'butthurt' because they aren't getting paid twice for the same product. I would like to get paid twice for the same product as well, or come up with blueprints for a product for a couple hundred grand and then generate copies for .25c to be sold for $60.

Meh.

As if EA has ever released (not even developed) more than 2 or 3 games worth paying for.

Have fun getting heart broken over that.

This is just another piece of the masterplan for developers to annihalate the used game market, i mean look at everything the last 6 months what developers and manufacturers have been doing with digital content and online features, it's not like they all sitting round a table with their evil laughs and pussy stroking but they all throwing their greed in together so no single developer looks that bad.

I don't see the problem with EA doing this. Then again, I buy most of my games new from retailers.
