This could be the most credible proof that the PlayStation 3 possesses formidable hardware: IBM's fastest supercomputer to date, Blue Gene/P, is juiced up by the same kind of processing chip that was originally designed for the Sony PS3.Blue Gene/P is approximately 100,000 more powerful than a PC, just enough to make PlayStation 3 owners feel proud about their powerful machine. IBM's latest supercomputer can run about 1,000 trillion calculations per second, also termed as "petaflops".
Blue Gene/P's predecessor, the Blue Gene/L, is used to protect nuclear weapons stockpile, and has already reached a calculating speed of 280.6 teraflops or trillions of calculations. "Blue Gene/P marks the evolution of the most powerful supercomputing platform the world has ever known," said Dave Turek, vice president of IBM's deep computing, about Blue Gene/P.
IBM possesses a remarkable supercomputer manufacturing portfolio: they have produced about 50% of existing 500 supercomputers, as well as providing CELL processors for PlayStation 3 and for the Blue Gene/P. IBM also has notable competition in the supercomputing industry with the likes of Sun, maker of the Constellation machines.
The first batch of Blue Gene/P are slated for use at the following institutions: the Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council, and two unnamed US laboratories.

the ps3 does have a "real" cell processor, one processor is just dedicated to an unknown task, probably the firmware management.leaving 7 open processors.

So I have been searching through IBM articles and I know IBM took some effort to design Cell processors for servers and scientific computing, however I found little to no details on the physical differences between the ps3 cell and its limited instruction set with these Cells supposedly designed for scientific computing.
So take that petaflop performance with a grain of salt, it may not actually achieve such a rate for say a simple 64 bit add instruction.
Look at the terraflop processing number..with numbers like these i bet the ps3 could play games.....wait a minute hgas sony even tried using it for games/?? Or is it just a poorly made trojan horse to ram sony's crappy new format down our throats? The specs seem pretty accurate though.. I mean the terraflop number clearly indicate that when it comes to flopping the ps3 has definitely delivered.

The cell in the PS3 has one SPU disabled to produce better yields when creating waffers (the things they actually create the cpu on)....then it has one reserved for the XMB at all times....so 6 for actual game usage...
Yes, the Cells in this super computer would all be 8 SPU cells, as they are not worried about production capabilities and would be going for quality over quantity....they are probably also using 500-1000 Cell's to acheive this performance...

Only an idiot would claim that the Cell is a weak chip.....but it would also take an idiot to say that the cell was made for games...because it's not.
It's made for inline calculations like weather simulators, physics reactions simulators, protein folding simulators....translation of data from satelites into real time images....REALLY REALLY good for scientific and education purposes...also very scaeleable as you can keep addin'g cpu's....
Unfortunately, it's not good for out of order calculations, "ifs" and "whens" and "elses", which is what the vast majority of game code is....very little is set in stone in a game, even moreso with worlds becomming more and more dynamic....
This is one of the reasons I think splinter cell conviction "cannot be done" on PS3....they have so much A.I and variables that need to be checked, it's just not possible for the single general purpose CPU on the PS3 to handle it all.....remember "everything" can be interacted with in the game and how you interact with is case specific....that's alot of out-of-order code....
But it's great for creating geometry, that doesn't think.....so this is why in Lair you see lot's of mountains with lot's of polygons.....and you get to swoop down on huge crowds of "soldiers" that just stand there while you torch them.....
Sony created cell knowing it would be an ass-kicker in the real world, and that they would make most of their money licensing it out to universities and labs....then decided they might as well throw it into the PS3, without really thinking about how well it would do as a gaming CPU....
But if (when XD) the ps3 firmware is cracked, could the 8th one be enabled through software?

No, they are "Broken" The reasoning is if they try to produce chips with 8 spu's they have to throw out any waffers that somehow defect and produce only 7 spu's....so if they disable one, then they do not have to waste any, unless they are horribly defective with 2+ spu's gone....

Well I am basing my opinion from articles on Anandtech and arstechnica of VERY in depth breakdowns of each part of the 360 + PS3 design. Not just their interpretation of the numbers given by each company, but they actually get in there and find out exactlly what is what and then with their expertise, deduce it's real world capabilities in gaming.
The general conclusion is that although PS3 has some more raw horsepower in the Cell, it's not the kind of processing used for games...also there are bottle necks in the system that even though the main bus transfer speed is higher then 360, they are not able to even fill the pipe 60%.
They agree that the more elegently designed 360 will run games better, and with all parts designed to work together, it CAN and does use the entirety of the bandwidth on it's system bus....
That's the thing, bottlenecks.....
One guy makes a good analogy of the PS3 being a drag racer and the 360 a high end sports car.....the drag racer has more horsepower and top speed in theory, but when put into pratical use, say on even a simple oval track, it will fail miserably, however the less powerful/speedy car that it's overall made better will succeed....
The Cell is a very specialised processor, this is what people need to realise....and its specialty is not gaming...

Memory when talking about PC's and PC like devices is always RAM as that is in effect the devices "memory"

So my response above where I'm telling you to go read 12+ page technical breakdowns of the systems....ya, disregard that stealth because you won't even understand any of it and will be left in the dark forever mumbling "ps3 is the most powerful console on earth...." over and over....you say it enough you will beleive it...
Maybe go start first with some basic technical manuals, get your definitions of basic things down first, then you can maybe join in the discussion...
a console has more power doesn't mean it will come out on top in the long run. Look at the last gen consoles, the xbox had more power then the PS2 or GC, but it didn't come out on top. Also the ps3 is set to be on the market for 8 years compared to the 3 years the Xbox 360 still has left.
The next xbox will have more power probably then the ps3, a blue ray or HD DVD drive depending on which one survives and wins the format wars.And will be cheaper then the ps3 was at launch, probably 400 dollars again. But even this advantage once released wont mean it will beat the consoles out at that point.

Oh, and by the way, the Cell is OCTO-CORE. YES. EIGHT CORES. I don't know where the hell you think you got this "single core" ***** from, but you're WRONG, so STOP EMBARRASSING YOURSELF YOU IMBECILE. This is why I knew he was a kid, because all he wanted to do was argue about the consoles when the discussion was actually about fanboys, not consoles. I have nothing against any console, I just don't like fanboys, and yet he could not understand that.
He even boasts about a victory he THINKS he had over Shatterdome elsewhere on QJ, which is something no adult would feel the need to do. The fact that he relies on someone elses blog to make 'his' point (again console wars) and thinks it's proof rather than opinion, again shows his lack of maturity. He attacked Gamer for doing nothing wrong and to cap it all, he shows his complete lack of knowledge when he demonstrated that he doesn't even know the difference between RAM and HDD storage (elsewhere in this thread) and does so in a way where he thinks he's the one who's right.
So yes PS34ME, Shealth is a kid, he acts like one, thinks like one and is as naive as you could get. I have nothing against kids however, I've had some great discussions with kids online over the years, but Stealth is not a kid who is mature for his age and therefore can hold an intelligent discussion online. What annoys me is people who say the 'PS3 sucks' instead of actually giving it a fair assessment.
Sony did not just make a Blu-Ray player with a simple console inside because the games industry is worth far more to sony than that.
Blu-Ray games of Blu-Ray proportions will be out for the PS3 in the future and it wont be just full of video. I have PS2 games that come on 2 DVD's so why not?
The Cell IS a very powerful processor and no, the single unit in the PS3 alone is not the only Cell running the hardware mentioned in the article above! It of course has many many Cells but they did choose Cells and if they chose other processors, then more would have been required and the cost would have been greater.
If both the 360 and PS3 were squeezed to capacity, the graphic quality would look better on the 360 but the content, diversity and scale would be better on PS3.
