Will Universal give in to the Blu-ray pressure?

HD DVD - Image 1The format wars is certainly not over yet, but with Blockbuster's decision to support Blu-ray movies only, Universal Studios may very well feel the pressure for them to start publishing movies in Blu-ray discs as well, or so Variety reports.

Universal Studios is the only major entertainment outfit that does not support Blu-ray. Variety supposes that should Universal agree to at least put out titles on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray formats, the format wars may suddenly be turned upside down, or be brought to a swift conclusion. Consumers who opted to wait for the format wars to end before buying may want to jump ship to Blu-ray once they find out that the blue laser plays movies from all studios. Richard Dotty, Envisioneering Group tech guru agreed:

So much consumer interest would open up this summer and fall that every studio would be smiling and wondering why they've been jousting all this time. Universal may continue to place its bets (on HD DVD). But if you want revenue, you put out what consumers want. And right now consumers want Blu-ray.

But despite the mounting pressure, Universal is still adamant in supporting HD-DVD. Ken Graffeo, executive vice president for Universal Studios Home Entertainment, said that Toshiba's HD-DVD players are now enjoying 70% market share. However, it should be noted that one of the causes of Blu-ray's traction is that it was built into the PlayStation 3 consoles.

Graffeo also added that the high definition disc market is still too young for Universal to publish titles in Blu-ray, saying that it's still hard to gauge how much impact selling Blu-ray discs will have on their sales.

Great..

Another fantastic non-story. To summarize: No they won't.

by - 2007-07-18 07:02:31
Hope they do

Universal has some great movies I like a lot, but I'm in the Blu-ray camp because of the PS3. I hope they at least start releasing on both formats be the end of this year. Otherwise I think I hold off until they do since I don't want to buy two versions of the same movie.

Blu-Ray Wins

Slowly studios have been feeling the pressure of Blu-ray and it's only a matter of time(short matter) until I'll be able to get Dawn of the Dead on Blu-Ray... HELL YEAH!

by - 2007-07-18 07:10:41
Blu-Ray has commanding player market share...

If you take into account the hundreds of thousands of PS3s out there. Granted, a study pointed at only 30% of consoles are being used for movies (PS3 number is likely far higher). But the total is still devastating to HD-DVD. You shouldn't be reporting just what they say without confirming whether it is true or not -- in this case HD-DVD having 70% hardware market share is an outright lie. It's more like 20 to 30%.

by - 2007-07-18 08:27:08
HD-DVD = Movies / PS3 = Majority Games

I own both the PS3 and XA2 (also A1) HD-DVD Player, both since inception. I have a decent home theater and displays in other rooms. I have bought 10 PS3 Games, 11 BluRay movies, and 65 HD-DVD movies. I am as neutral as can be but for some reason over time I have purchased more HD-DVD's. The Picture quality on a 120" screen with a 1080p projector demands the best source, both formats are delivering what I need lately. I do not consider the PS3 a movie machine so I will be looking into the new Panny BD10A.

by - 2007-07-18 08:50:59
exactly

how many times do we have to hear this put in so many different ways. bluray is winning. Universal will not jump ships anytime soon. Still too early for HD market. PS3 counts as a bluray player for attach rates, but not for overall hardware sales. blah blah blah blah. bluray is still winning

by - 2007-07-18 08:59:55
WTF!?!?!?!?!

This is a lie: "Toshiba's HD-DVD players are now enjoying 70% market share" That's only true if you exclude the PS3. In addition, I bet they don't exclude the 360 drive sales. Lying bastards!

Frogs

Frogs only eat cakes in half light, so hd dvd will loose, Rivvit.

"I bet they don't exclude the 360 drive sales." Wouldn't doubt it....

by - 2007-07-18 13:01:40
Blu ray is outselling HD-DVD 100 to 1!

Universal is switching to blu ray only! Blu ray has won all over the world! What's HD-DVD? You can trust us.... Why would we lie to you? Oh yeah, the billions of dollars we will profit from it. Umm I mean, we just want you to have the best entertainment experence, uh yeah. No we don't do anything unethical to win. Forget that European Union investigation. The evidence has already been destroyed, and anyone with loose lips has had umm unfortunate fatal accidents. Looks like we win.

To Fart-smeller

You know what, I was thinking the exact same thing. That post sounded so much like him that this came to mind - If it looks like sh*t (MCS), smells like sh*t (MCS) and feels like sh*t (MCS), then it must be sh*t (MCS)!

The average PS3 fan on this site...

This is the basic idea everyone gets from sony fanboys who just visit this site... *OMG Mister Common Sense, OMG Mister Common Sense, OMG Mister Common Sense!!* *What!? Sony is losing?! This must be a lie or somehow twisted to make Sony look bad!! Theres no way Sony could be losing!* *Quick, take all of the stars off of the people who arent pro-sony...I know it doesnt really mean anything, but were a mature community and we need to keep it that way!! Now give me my stars!!* *If you guys come across a pro-sony article make sure you jump it so that everyone can see it at the top!! We need all the good news we can muster! And if its anti-MS then jump it up too, even though it doesnt mean anything to us* *PS3 is the best! Why? Because Sony told us it was!! Nevermind that MS has better games, more games, better online, more users! If you dont agree with me then youre just retarded and not a real gamer* *BluRay is 10x better, even though studies have shown that HDDVD has better picture quality and faster read times. Who cares!? Its BluRay and its made by Sony!!* *This comment is anti-sony, so it must be Mister Common Sense! Lets pretend we are him, say something dumb, and then ignore the fact that it says (unregistered) next to the name and bash on him some more!!* *We dont have any games to play, so lets go to QJ and deny any bad news that sony has so that people will think ps3 isnt a failure, even though it obviously is*

AoxomamoxoA!

I am not surprised that one fanboy would stick up for another! I am not surprised by the hypocrisy and ignorance in your post either. One paragraph you spend saying that we should all be mature and two paragraphs later you are calling people retarded? Say that again! It does sound like either you, MCS, or Xman. We assume it's not you even though it's not hard to logout and use whatever name that you wish. That only leaves a few clowns on QJ that behave like the three of you do. I thought that it may be MCS too but did not feel the need to state my opinion. Instead of wasting my time rebuffing your entire post I will just ask for one thing. Where did you find the study that said that BD loaded much slower and had inferior image quality. The PS3 is actually very quick to load an BD. Try to find a pile of BS, I mean a study, that discounts that fact! Also don't tell me that it is because BD is encoded with an inferior codec because most new BD's don't use MPEG 2 anymore. The newer titles almost exclusively use H.264/AVC. That discounts your whole argument, doesn't it? In case you haven't heard there are actually drastic differences in visual quality with the same film between different HD-DVD and BD players when compared against the SAME format. Explain how you then claim that HD-DVD looks better than BD when the same HD-DVD movie looks better or worse on different HD-DVD players and the same BD movie looks better or worse depending on which BD player you use to view it. Is it even comparable? You are so angered by the fact that the RROD epidemic is so well-known and widespread, because the PS3 got a price cut, and because the 360 actually does have competition, and it's not the Wii, that you can't do anything but spread crap like a farmer. Go find a hobby! Go find a girlfriend! Just go find something and leave us alone! My 2 cents worth!

lol

I agree with : Thinker, Fart-smeller and Folding Junkie! . i give you all except : AoxomamoxoA and smiley. AoxomamoxoA do us a favor and go find Xman, MCS and Shatterdome and leave this forum. I hear people like you are perfect for Neoseeker.com Since they like pro xbox and anti ps3 fanboys like you.

by - 2007-07-19 03:27:39
i think

Universal is is stupid, why wouldn't you want more consumers to purchase your movies, allegiance to a single format is not wise business. and please bear in mind that more and more people are now converting to HDTV, HD players are now becoming abundant and so will be demands for movies and if you dont start now your company will be missing a piece of the pie.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-07-19 04:20:46
.

Why do I get blamed for everything!?!? I thought it was pretty funny. You have no sense of humor. What are you complaining about anyway? You can still use your PS3 as a blu ray player when games are no longer made for it in 4 years. I don't even give a s*it about this format war anymore anyway. I just got dish network HD with a HD recorder. 20 HD channels, local, plus HBO. No, it was not me, I'm not the only person in the world that thinks that way. I didn't know quixand worked as a fart smeller. Must pay pretty well. But his real name is Peter Dille, thay make the same dumbass comments.

by - 2007-07-19 06:05:38
More Games & Users?

Ummmmm......Did we forget the ps2? Isn't Sony's last gen still kicking the ***** out of Microsoft's current gen? But if you want to just compare the 360 to the ps3, then you have to take into account that the 360 was realeased a year ahead of the ps3. It's pretty much common sense that it will have more users and more games. The 360 didn't have to much when it was launched either. After a while, sure it got good games and plenty of users. Given the same amount of time, the ps3 will too.

by - 2007-07-19 08:28:52
Pointless

You know I'm happy with my PS3 and Blu-ray, but even I have gotta wonder about the fanboi mentaility around here. PS3 is getting outsold by pretty close to the same ratio HD-DVD movies are yet none of the fanbois imagine Sony folding and bowing out. Why would you think Universal would bow out? Its going to be a while still before I get any satellite system, all providers are seriously lacking in HD content unless you are a sports fan.

by - 2007-07-19 12:12:32
PS2 is killing the PS3

No Sonys last gen is NOT kicking the ***** out of the 360 (other than Japan where it is also doing it to the PS3) BUT it is kicking the ***** out of the PS3 all over the world, if a console is released a year later it makes no bit of difference they both had development kits at the same time so stop kidding yourself. The 360 had games like Project Gotham 3 etc far better than anything on the PS3 release and still better than any of the PS3 driving games..

by - 2007-07-19 12:26:35
wtf

i hate you and your insane money tree

by - 2007-07-19 12:29:36
Argh

when will this arguing end! Aieeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

by - 2007-07-19 15:23:29
out sold

you know, last week, ps3 out sold the 360 in every major spot. http://vgchartz.com/aweekly.php browse the site a little and you will see that the ps3 is doing alright. and PG3 is alright but i don't think its better then GT hd as far as graphics and game play. and the full game aint even out yet so i cant really compare them. I have to agree with you on the ps2 thing. ps2 is kicking the hell out of ps3. but who cares its all money for sony anyway.

by - 2007-07-19 16:04:26
just play

Why does anyone really care what system somebody else thinks is better, you don't have to play it. I have the PS3 and i hope Blue-Ray is the winning format only becuase i have a player for it; but the Xbox is just fine, (my friend has it). Sony and Microsoft are both usually full of crap and after my money, it's just what they do...unfortunately. I guess i'm a sony fan when it comes to my game system and electronics but a good deal of my other stuff is microsoft. Just let it go people, there is no definitive way to determine the better system- it's all personal pref. really and numbers alone don't always mean that much.

by - 2007-07-19 17:26:07
lol

these comments are funny, especially AoxomamoxoA's. it's so right too, he basically summed up this whole site. @ folding junkie, i dont think u understood his post. he was not telling anyone to be mature, nor was he calling anyone retarded, he was making fun of the typical qj user. read it again @ stealth, just stop posting, nobody cares if you gave them a smiley. you anti xbox pro ps3 fanboy

by - 2007-07-20 03:17:56
um..

Give proof that im a pro sony and anti xbox. Though i do state facts on things doesn't make me anti xbox, as a matter of fact, i just some real cash from my uncle the other day which was over a 1000 and om looking eventually to get an xbox, so i suggest you shut up.Howver say what you like your making your self look stupid. Now that i got some serious cash i will get another system but right now im waiting.

by - 2007-07-21 04:13:14
eh...HD

HD-DVD is a nice idea - it's just Blu-ray is better. Why does universial have to always be difficult? It's not like their Hollywood's most successful Studio... The top 2 are exclusive to Blu-ray and everyone else supports it. Once Disney Pixar release their Pictures... Game over. Animation sells units..."MUM!!! Can i get Cars on Blu-ray?!!!!" "Sure Kiddo... but You need a blu-ray player!" "PS3 mum!!!" Hmm, I don't care which format wins, coz at the end of the day, we all have to buy into it whether we like it or not... but honestly...look at the support...What does the HD-DVD camp have that blu-ray doesnt? Universial Intel Microsoft Toshiba... Blu-ray... Everyone else.
