Warner Bros - Image 1The format wars have taken a surprising turn. Warner Bros. Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing all of their high-definition DVD titles exclusively in the Blu-Ray format after May this year.

This announcement was made by both Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO of Warner Bros., and Kevin Tsujihara, President of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.

Meyer explained this move by the company:

Warner Bros.' move to exclusively release in the Blu-ray disc format is a strategic decision focused on the long term and the most direct way to give consumers what they want.

The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if format confusion continues to linger. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for mass market success and ultimately benefit retailers, producers, and most importantly, consumers.

Tsujihara also shared his thoughts on the issue saying that the two-formats was creating confusion among the consumers. He added that the public has already "clearly chosen Blu-ray" so they are simply catering to their demands.

» wow

That's huge.

PS3 could see some serious sales by the end of the year(aside from MGS, FF, or whatever having effects).

by Someone_PR - 2008-01-04 20:43
» wow... the year starts...

and we just see a success in SONY and yeah in the ps3 too because is blu ray duh... someone can just said that 2008 will not be the year of the ps3?

Do I get credit for it since I gave you guys the tip/''heads up'' or were you guys already going to put it up??

enjoy your 99 dollar HDDVD players and HDDVD 360 Add Ons...

i'm just gonna sit back and enjoy this moment.

We had to compile all the tipsters who sent us the tip because we didn't want to leave anyone out. Hope you understand.

» Quixand leave those pour guys alone man!

Isnt the end of this so called war enough? Isnt the waist of so much money on HD-DVD dvds addons players etc enough?

I wonder what will come out of thisn regarding the imminent anouncment from MS regarding the HD-DVD 360...? Will it turn out to be Blu? Naaaaa!

Anyway another win for sony and us the consumers..plus the uninformed ones which seem to get...confused...

by redbrick - 2008-01-04 23:37
» ...it was inevitable....

...BR was always the better technology, having higher capacity. I never understood why HD-DVD even bothered with it.

by Quixand - 2008-01-05 00:35
» hey man

i get you... but aren't the PS3 owners the ones "wasting money" on a $600 console as some morons here keep on saying?? well now, it's becoming clearer and clearer who made the smart investment... they can still buy the Xbox Ultimate and maybe after spending $1000 bucks altogether they can finally come close to what you get with a PS3 (which was a stupid thing to buy ryt Xbots??).

anyway... bring on the "Blu Gay" comments now.

Xbots now has another useless device sitting beside their already ticking time bomb.

by lee123 - 2008-01-05 00:45
» haha lol

R.I.P HD-DVD

by ForgottenSoup - 2008-01-05 01:30
» Sigh

This is getting depressing. I bought a 360 to play 360 games and a PS3 to play PS3 games. Movies were the last thing on my mind.

Honestly, I just want to want a plain old movie on a plain old DVD. Why fix what isn't broken? I don't need internet enabled DVD menus or online movie-based mini-games.

by gtauk - 2008-01-05 01:53
» "Why fix what isn't broken?"

they arn't fixing anything they are giving us hd content which most people are going hd these days and don't want to be spending money on a new hd tv and then still watch movies etc. in standard defination. What would be the point in that if you spent all that money on a new 5000 billion inch hd tv and you can only watch stuff that will look just as good on a 1 inch tv. People buy hd tvs to watch hd stuff and they are giving us movies in hd!!! it's what the consumers want and seeing aas blu ray is winning the ps3 is the cheapest option for a blu ray player plus it does a lot of other things if your just looking for a player

by scarface_tha_second - 2008-01-05 02:13
» Warner Goes Blu

I heard about this yesterday. The boys down at Paramount should feel really dumb for going HD DVD exclusive, because that is the only thing that is keeping this "format war" from ending.

I am all for console diversity. I don't have much problem with the 360 or Wii, even though I am definitely a PlayStation fan. This video format war is just retarded though. What, other than its cheapness, is better about HD DVD? Blu-ray is superior in every way, is it not?

by extra2000 - 2008-01-05 02:27
» ok...

I personally care neither for Blu-Ray nor HD-DVD. I prefer Blu-Ray the fact that I own a PlayStation 3, and Blu-Ray is the only option for me to view HD Films.

You ask me, whichever is better? I think they're both fine, they have their ups and downs but to hell with it, they are just disc formats that can contain films that have more than 640x480 resolution and uncompressed audio.

Oh, btw, I wish Warner will release "The Matrix Trilogy" for Blu-Ray.

by Lifeline - 2008-01-05 02:57
» Right,

HD dvd is'nt dead, it has just been dealt a nasty blow, yes, but it is'nt dead yet!

Now, for bluray to truely succeed in its dominance of HDM, the big electronic's giant's must start to release their bluray player's at much more realistic prices. Yes, bluray is popular, mostly because of the PS3 but we must not forget the dedicated Bluray player's as not everyone will be interested in purchasing a games machine to watch HD movies in their living room's.

I for one am suprised and happy that Warner has made this decision, all bluray need's is for Paramount and it's supporter's to see the light and at least stop producing exclusive HD dvd movie's!

by Orgazmo1009 - 2008-01-05 04:04
» nope

If you knew the differences between the 2 formats you wouldn't choose bluray just because you own a ps3. go to www.bluraytraining.com" to see the light.

As for this blow to HD DVD its shaweet!! only 2 more companies to go. Universal and paramount.

by wilmheath - 2008-01-05 04:10
» who cares?

Big freakin whoop Quixand. If this type of stuff makes your day than i'm sure glad I'm not living your life. I wonder how many swirlies you got in highschool per day. Anyways if blueray wins out i'll probably buy a ps3 for watching movies and playing exclusives and keep my 360 for playing everything else. The 360 is a game machine and right now it's a darn good one compaired to the all-in-one ps3. I don't care about specs; all I care about is games and right now the 360 has them and the ps3 doesn't.

by wilmheath - 2008-01-05 04:12
» one last thing

If the 360 does come out with a cheap system that includes hddvd it will be interesting to see how that plays out. It will be really up to how cheap they make it and how bad they want to win this format war.

by Someone_PR - 2008-01-05 04:37
» ookkk...

Why when someone is happy with a product that he bought the people start to feel sorry for him or his life? not just here, everywhere... just to feel more cool or something... when a matter of fact him/her have a better life than yours... anyway...

Oh... before I forget, the thing that the ps3 doesn't have games is an old school comment and a stupid one soon this year... come with something new

by gtauk - 2008-01-05 05:10
» Parammount

are being payed to go exclusive to hd dvd and it's only for 18 months i think anyway oh and Blu-ray is superior in every way except for the price, it costs more to produce stuff on blu ray i think than hd dvd but thats all i know theres probably something else that makes it less superior than hd dvd but blu ray is still the better of the two

by gtauk - 2008-01-05 05:13
» but if people do their research

they will find that the ps3 is the cheapest blu ray player still i think and it does a lot more! Say a family go out and want a blu ray player to watch hd movies on their new hd screen they got for christmas and they come across the ps3 which is a blu ray player to watch movies with the family and a games machine the kids can enjoy! wow its like a in 1 hah

by gtauk - 2008-01-05 05:15
» i think

it might be a bit late now seeing as there is already cheap hd dvd players that would be cheaper then a 30 with hd dvd and think of all the people that got screwed because they bought the hd dvd add on but microsoft is known for screwing people over arn't they? lol

by blkthunda - 2008-01-05 05:16

Can't face the facts huh?? Living in a dream?? Try a snicker bar.

by yworob - 2008-01-05 05:48
» This will probably kill HD-dvd

I'm not an xbot or whatever you guys want to call it but I'm annoyed that Sony got what they wanted when they are the ones who started this stupid goddamn format war in the first place. Sony helped develop HD-dvd with Toshiba but decided to be greedy and start their own format and keep all the money while screwing the consumers over by starting a format war. Sony can kiss my A**.

by gtauk - 2008-01-05 05:58
» ew

i don't like snickers lol

» Excellent

;)

by CHUCKINGROCKSATSPACESHIPS - 2008-01-05 07:12
» Sony's Plan?

More than likely Sony could sell stand alone Blu-ray players cheaper. They are probably trying to temporarily keep stand alone players prices up until they lure enough people in to buy a Playstation 3. That way they have the potential to sell even more content. When enough people buy PS3s, the stand alone players will probably go down a lot. Just a thought.

by ~~ - 2008-01-05 07:23
» ~~

Sony didn't develope Blu-Ray on their own.

And besides, I'm happy the better format is winning, HD-DVD is just a waste of time.

It's hardly better than 2 layer DVD.

If they could develope a commercial 4layer DVD you would have a better format than your HD-DVD crap +\

by ~~ - 2008-01-05 07:27
» ~~

And there is a reason for why HD-DVD's can be manufactored by slightly altering the DVD creating machines:

Because HD-DVD is nothin more than a slightly upgraded DVD. 15GB... Just give us 4layer DVD's, that would save people lots of money...

by yworob - 2008-01-05 07:57
» You forgot that the porn industry supports HD-dvd

Its not much considering that most people probably watch porn on the internet nowadays but it is something that most people dont mention when talking about this format war.

by Lifeline - 2008-01-05 11:11
» Ahh...

Supports HD dvd? Well not for long as the porn industry are already starting to see the light and are now going bluray!

» wtf is juice

not putting hd dvd in the xbox is coming back too haunt you M-Soft eh... blu ray sounds cooler, dvd is more familiar : solution rename ex. red ray, bleu ray, ray ray, rubble ray, shuga ray, ray rice, raymund, dvd ray or switch back to the first one just plain old dvd...... no wait that would cost microsoft points

by Lifeline - 2008-01-06 01:20
» @Eclipze

Ok, "A major porn studio" is starting to see the light and is going bluray and as a matter of fact it was'nt that long ago, right or wrong, it's happening and others will undoubtly follow suite!

» I do not have a damn HD-DVD Player, can't you read the freaking lines?

So how is it possible for me to get HD-DVD films?

On top of that, if you know how to read, I said "PREFER", not chose. Please read and understand the context before commenting.

by na2rul - 2008-01-06 04:31
» @ gtauk

Well explained. Why buy a 1080p TV when only half potential can be unleashed.

Xbox live movies only come in 720p. Im sorry. but if they this is the way forward, they'r wrong!

Movies downloaded such as 300, matrix etc in 720p are goin to be obsolete in next 2-3 yrs.

1080p TVs are gettin CHEAP!. Hopefully they will also shrink the size as well

by na2rul - 2008-01-06 04:34
» lol

mars a day baby

by na2rul - 2008-01-06 04:37
» well yeh

otherwise ps3 wud probably still be £80-£100 more than stand alone BD player

by the by - 2008-01-06 06:42
» er right...

i seem to remember having a conversation with YAZ i think, not sure, but anyway, about the fact that if MS decides to have internal HD-DVD in their machines, then they are ripping off their existing 360 owners because i can't see the games devs not taking advantage of the internal HD-DVD drive to store more data for their games!!

if this is the case then MS will either abandon their current models, thus leaving their existing customers with a 360 doorstop, or they will encourage their current customers to maybe buy the external add-on, and screw their customers out of even more money!!

this is all just therory, but......

by terrainw123 - 2008-01-07 03:17
» whoa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

first off i have a PS3, 360 and a Wii

and out of the three ps3 is the best it has way more firmware updates for the system that improve and add many new features and within a couple of months it will be able to everything 360 can do and then some plus HOME comes out soon i cant wait this whole idea of warner going blue ray just proves ps3 is the future.

ps. killzone 4/08 haze 3/08 pray for xbox

by Tapp - 2008-01-07 05:49
» What if?

Does anyone know, if Sony are proved right that bluray is the way forward for game development and for the film industry will Microsoft have to get there bluray technology from Sony? and if they did have to could this put an end to the 360's development?

And just to add to comment about the porn industry going HD not Bluray when was the last time your saw a big budget blockbuster of a porn film at the cinema? the idea that VHS beat BETAMAX because of the support of the porn industry is also a little spurious there were many other factors its just that the porn factor is the most interesting, i'd also be interested to know just how many people own porn dvds? isn't the internet the easiest place to find porn?
