*UPDATE* Warner Bros. NOT dipping into HD-DVD |
Ó
For movie companies, profit is profit. And Warner Bros. Pictures is no exception to the rule. Be it HD-DVD or Blu-ray, movie firms distribute their movies both ways and have increased their overall sales per picture by doing so. But news from the Los Angeles Times reports that Warner might lean more heavily to HD-DVD - "might" being the operative term here.Talks of a "lucrative offer" being considered by Warner Bros. have streamed off to several entertainment sites, and even while it may seem like speculation, the news story quotes from several "Hollywood insiders." Paramount and Dreamworks were also approached with similarly interesting offers by the HD-DVD camp, which resulted in the two firms staying exclusive to HD-DVD.
It's not to say that Warner will be hopping off the fence to HD-DVD just yet. Official word has yet to be given, and Warner might not want to leave the profit edge it has just gained by sitting neutral between Blu-ray and HD-DVD. More developments on this as they roll in.

Update: True to our beliefs, Warner Bros. isn't going to give up its unique position to distribute movies on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Perhaps in an effort to control rumor flames, the firm released a list of movies that were going to both formats.
Aside from the fact that Warner announced Blu-ray movie bundles (the same titles were claimed to also come out in HD-DVD), New Line Cinema (under Warner) would also an HD-DVD version of "Hairspray" right after the Blu-ray version is out. Matt Lasorsa, New Line EVP of marketing, told Home Media Magazine:
Clearly, there isn't a format winner at this point, so weÂ’re going to adopt the strategy from Warner, our sister company, and mirror what they are doing. And by supporting both formats, we are giving consumers the ultimate choice.
Thanks to Quixand, DJ Natas, and bigshynepo for the additional information. Another load of credits goes to HighDefDigest for the facts.

Ceasar, this article is COMPLETE speculation? What, is this a slow news day? You are obviously posting this out of HD bias. Did you read today's news that Warner's sibling company, Newline Pictures, has announce their FIRST HD disc (Hairspray) and it's only coming out on Blu-Ray right now?! Report both sides of the news or don't report it at all. Come to think of it, this is a game blog, stick to PS3 games.
The LA Times reported this Monday. WB was offered a HD DVD deal shortly after the Paramount deal. WB refused because 300 and TMNT outsold HD DVD. Monday WB debunked the HD DVD exclusive rumor by quickly listing releases for both formats! Check out their web site!!
Toshiba's offer has already been declined and Warner opted to sell both Blu Ray and HDDVD movies... and Warner even announced a new Blu Ray Bundle. The First Blu Ray Bundle will come out on September 18... "The Best of Blu-ray, Family' set will include 'Happy Feet,' 'Scooby-Doo,' 'Tim Burton's Corpse Bride' and 'The Ant Bully.' as for the just recently announced second Blu Ray Bundle... 'Alexander,' 'Troy,' and 'Happy Feet' are among the top hits to be included in Warner Home Video's next wave of 'Best of Blu-ray' bundles, due November 6.
...until I saw all your replies. Heehee. Stopped dead cold in my tracks. I don't know where the "HD bias" stems from (I can't relate much to HD formats just yet, as I still cherish my DVDs), but the information reported was treated as speculation. As for DJ Natas and Quixand, thanks for the updates. Info is much appreciated. Update coming in 100...99...98...
the "bias" stems from the fanboys... news is news... people has to take it in its face value regardless if it's good news or bad. as for cherishing DVDs although i buy Blu Ray Movies to boost my collection (it's not the same anymore for me if i'm not watching in hi def... my standards changed) still i buy more DVDs than Blu Ray like last Saturday i just bought Season 1 to 5 of Alias and Season 3, 4, and 5 of That 70's Show while i only bought three Blu Ray films Shooter, Into The Blue, and Sky High. Note: Bought Sky High for my kid and he said "my old one has more special features than my new one"... and he was right, there are more special features on his DVD copy of Sky High than on the Blu Ray one... strange and disappointing as well... and then i popped in Into The Blue and guess what the Special Features that it's supposed to have (based on what's written on the back of the Blu Ray box) is not there... first time this happened to me and i've been cleaning out the Blu Ray racks in JB Hifi since forever... it was really a bad day.
So.... New Line Cinema = Lord of the Rings trilogy in blu-ray?
Why don't they all just make both formats?
regardless of me being a PS3 owner and a huge supporter of Blu Ray still my love for movies exceeds that of my personal interest in this console and media format wars... so if they all release on both formats then i would be happy... the hell with it i just want all this "whose got the longer *****" contest between the two to stop!!! if Blu Ray wins then fine if HDDVD wins then i'll buy a stand alone player and my current Blu Ray collection will still play on my PS3... i welcome whatever happens... as long as the media standard is set and finalized. but it will never happen... each group is looking for more leverage against each other... and even if Warner moves over to HDDVD still this war will rage on, everybody knows that prior to Paramount HDDVD survived with just Universal as an exclusive supporter... so Blu Ray will thread water as well and stay afloat and then something else will happen in the future and the balance might tip again... both format will be very hard to kill... i just wish that Sony will practice the aggressiveness that Toshiba is showing... they should go for the throat!!!! but what they are is being passive and defensive...
It was a retorical question. I wish they would, but I know why they don't.
