ToshibaWhenever we talk about the technical aspects of our beloved PlayStation 3, we definitely cannot and should not miss its cell processor. Sony has always maintained that they actually plan to use this on a variety of applications.

While its usage is confined within the console for now, the company confirmed that these other applications will be available on the early parts of 2008. But now, Toshiba seems to leap out of nowhere and mentions that it will beat S
ony in marketing consumer electronics devices containing the said microprocessor.

It is no less than Yoshihide Fujii himself, President and CEO of Toshiba's Digital Media Network Company, who reiterated and highlighted that they are planning to do the same with the chip. Furthermore, Fujii mentioned that their time line is actually the same as that of Sony's but they will try to unveil products as early as late 2007. He will not, however, divulge what types of products or applications Toshiba is eyeing for the Cell chip.

Currently, known applications of the said processor include high-definition digital video and possible uses could be in TV sets and video recorders.

» Why the Industry Needs Sony....

a company that invest and makes new and revolutionary technologies...in fact.....with each Generation Sony offers the industry another invesment...and the PS3 is a true incarnation of next-gen technologies..[BLU-RAY,CELL PROCESSOR TECHNOLOGY,HDMI Digital Output Signal for unparalled Image and Audio Qualty]...all this For 500$

it is natural....Sony is a Leadin tecnology and elctronique Company...investing and producing new technology is their main profession.

The PS3 is a system...in which every single component of it.......is related to Sony....either a technology..or by-manufacturing...thus...we can define the PS3 as a SONY PRODUCT..

the same cannot be said about competitor microsoft......the xbox360 is system that has absolutely no Hardware based technology related to Microsoft.....meaning that the system...has really nothing to do with microsoft....its a hybrid of components made by [3rd party companies].

we can think of the 360...as an [OEM Product]....much like What Dell does with its Computers.....it brings different components......combine them into a PC for [LAZY people who cant customize thier own PC,S].......the only relation between the 360 and microsoft in terms of Hardware technology.....IS the [LOGO]...[the brand name]

for this the 360 cannot be defined as a Microsoft product.....unlike the PS3.....in which every component had Sony participation in it...even the RSX was made by Nvidia with Sony,s support for the archticture..

Microsoft cannot compete with Sony in terms of technology....it is...afterall.....a software company with poor hardware history.....and the 360 is Major proof....the system is hugely based on current-gen components.....the only next-gen component would be GPU [xenos]....and that is to be attributed to ATI not microsoft.

this is why we Need Sony for the industry to Grow.....Sony invest and risks to make new technology.....they could,ve launched the PS3 a year ago with last-gen tech like the 360.....but they invested and produced a true next-gen unit....and is loosing a lot to establish the standard of tech.

as i said the 360 is an OEM product....like any Dell PC....made as an plug&play system...with few functionalities ...this is NOT where the industry should be Headed.

In the End....i,d like to say.....to all those Gamerz who Dream of the VR [virtual reality headset]....such a technology can only be provided by Sony...since it seems its the only company whose willling to invest in expensive technology.....unlike Nentindo...which goes mostly for the low-cost gaming experience..

P.S:Pray that sony invests to make us an VR Headset with the Next-gen playstation[in 5 years]......such an invention could change the world....

****I have already posted this Article in the Wii vs PS3 thread...but due to the High Demand....i think more people need to read it. :)

» So?

Umm... Toshiba - stick it in a laptop and put intel and amd to shame... if you just stick it in a video recorder then you're wasting the technology and your money.

Sony - do you even care?

Fan boys and the guy who posted above alike: Don't ***** that the cell is going to be in other electronics like it's the plague - grow up.

I know you spent a lot of time writing this, but don't post it in multiple articles. I agree with several of your points (apart from the VR), but it just became astroturfing, we got your point the first time.

» Sony?

Cell was designed to be cheap enough to be used in everything, from calculators to workstations.

The 8 cored cell are reserved to Cell workstations, 7 cored to Ps3s, 6 cored to media players and the rest, all those "defective" Cells, with only 5,4,3,2 or 1 SPE functional , are more than enough for simple machines including Camcorders.

» wow

» Broken_Hero

It's one thing to be a Sony fanboy, but can you trying doing it without so much a** kissing next time.

Geez, you remind me of the sycophantic office creep who sucks up to the boss. Give it a rest please!

» There's a big difference between fans and fanboys.

So no, 360 fans didn't say cell sucks, but many 360 fanboys probably did, just as PS3 fanboys say most things MS sucks.

» man this guy is named Fuji!

wow, his name represent the power of the mont Fuji in Japan! I would love to have his name, lol.

And for the topic, every guys working a bestbuy and futureshop(cana dian) I talk are telling me that sony is the best for TVs this year and that toshiba had a lot of problems and they get a lot of returns right now, so I suppose Toshiba won't beat the crap out of sony on the cell, and I'm not saying toshiba is not good!!! I mean, I own a toshiba TV and I'll buy a new sony in 3 days, so I love the 2 of them ( love japan ), but right now sony is winning the year, that's all.

» know your history - amiga did consumer VR first

kids today...

look its cool to take an idea and think its new but its nicer if you give credit were its due and the fact is the Amiga and W Industries, were the ones that gave your dad the consumer VRH,Launch date: October 1991.

http://www.amigahistory.co.uk/virtuality.html

"Imagine an immersive world full of dinosaurs, skeletons and dwarfs. A world in which your friends' goal is to kill you. Imagine this running on an Amiga 3000. You've just entered virtuality!"

"The Amiga played a pivotal role in the early development of consumer virtual reality systems when W Industries (later renamed to Virtuality) licensed the Amiga 3000 for use in their VR machines. The 1000CS was an immersive VR environment that used a 3D joystick to track user movement. This user movement is translated into a three dimensional display that is fed to the user via the "Virtuality Visette 1" headset. The technical specifications for these units were impressive at the time, but now look extremely limited:"

sure cell/ps3 is a good thing and wil sell a lot more PPC based cores than apple ever did, infact i expect all partys to reinvest a massive amount and do far better will cell2 in its abilitys and core abilitys, perhaps mobile WiMax wireless with Mesh capabilitys as standard in every 256 core chip

see 'KiloCore' for the PPC based FPGA re-programable chip they could include as standard.

think innovative and mass produced = cheap and powerful for everyone.
