Toshiba HD DVD sales not performing as well as expected

Toshiba HD DVD sales not performing as well as expected - Image 1 Toshiba has reportedly announced that it will be scaling back its expected target of 1.8 million HD DVD players released in Canada and the U.S. down to 1 million. This drastic 44% drop has been attributed to low sales of their players in both markets.

Most are finding this surprising considering that Toshiba recently announced it was leading the market and holds 60 percent of the disc player business versus its opponent, Blu-Ray.

Apparently, those facts, while true did not account for the PlayStation 3. The reason they weren't included in the equation according to Universal Studios Home Entertainment VP Ken Graffeo is that they believe people purchasing the said system are not a major movie market.

Most PS3 owners buy movies only sparingly compared to those who buy the players alone. Consumers who are buying Playstation 3 are buying it as a game console. They're simply not buying it for watching as many high-definition movies as Sony said they would.

Nonetheless, it appears that the format wars have really taken its toll not only on the consumers but the creators of hardware themselves. A lot of people have been holding out to see which group would win before they decide to invest their hard earned money on it. After all, who would buy a thousand dollar movie player if it was to be deemed obsolete by next year? Keep checking back for the latest industry news here on QJ.net.

cry wah wah wah, Blu ray was born to dominate. It doesn't matter about the consoles! HD DVD was failed from the start the resolution sucks monekys! what were they thinking anyway there was no need for two new video formats... idiots!

» hmm

Im really not sure why Toshiba don't just drop the HD-DVD and save themselfs a lot of money. Blu-Ray is dominating in Europe and Asia, and many studios have gone multiplatform to Blu-Ray.

by Dj Natas - 2007-06-14 08:48
» The format was doomed from the start

because many in the industry supported Blue Ray from the start!

by hush404 - 2007-06-14 08:51
» I keep hearing

From toshiba that the PS3 doesn't matter in terms of installed user base for blu-ray. But really, if you've got a PS3 (which plays Blu-ray) then you much more likely to support Blu-Ray than spend another $600+ for a HD-DVD player to support that format.

Now, in the case of the HD-DVD addon for the 360... some will buy it and support the format but the fact that it's an addon means most people won't bother to fork over the $200 or so it costs, sticking with thier DVDs.

by PS3 dumbass - 2007-06-14 09:13
» why is this in the PS3 section?

Well a $300 HD movie player sure beats a $700 one. Blu ray will not be affordable for some time, and that's HD-DVD's greatest advantage.

1 million players is still a very large number, as only a few months ago it was announced blu ray sold one million DISCS. This format war is just plain stupid and sickening. I hope both formats die.

» $300 player not better if it plays 90% less movies

--Catchy title, but what I mean is that price is only the ultimate factor if both formats are on a level playing field (ie: same number of movies, from the same studios, are available). But, in this case, unless Blu-Ray-only studios suddenly start defecting to the HD-DVD camp (a slim chance in a cold place now), there will always be the lion's share of movies that won't be available on HD-DVD. It's like saying --here's a brand new car for only $1000! (But it's only got 1 axle.) And, regarding the numbers: remember that this is saying that Toshiba has lowered their SALES PROJECTION down to 1 million. They have recently only confirmed actual to-date sales of 150,000. In comparison, there are about 100,000 standalone Blu-Ray players, by Toshiba's own admission, and we know there are between 3-4 million PS3's worldwide (sold) at this time. --Considering it took Toshiba a year to get to 150,000, I think it's real wishful thinking that they'll achieve 1,000,000 this year (let alone the original 1.8 million).

Most PS3 owners I know who actually have an HDTV, but Blu-ray. I myself own over 12 Blu-ray. It is just ridiculous to assume that PS3 owners don't buy Blu-ray, when it seems that this just isn't the case.

I dont know what that rep was saying. I use my PS3 often for hi-def movies and took that into consideration when desciding to buy the console. . And who cares what the consumer bought it for anyway, it is still technically a Blu-ray media player.

right now Nintendo have a big smile in their face, with all that money they are making with the Almighty Wii. The Wii which it is the New King of the console and video games. i waited a long time to get a next gen console cause of the PS3 delays... i wanted next gen entertainment to its fullest... if XBox added the HDDVD from the get go built in i might not have waited so long... might have gotten an XBox then... but they have dvd.. dvd for gaming is getting outdated with every new game announced for production, it's insufficiency is showing... as for movies i already have a home theater and a dvd player plus a ps2 and ofcourse my desktop and laptop!!! so Blu Ray it is and it's worth it...

i already have 22 Blu Ray movies in my collection... i'm getting Ghost Rider for me and Music and Lyrics for my wife this weekend.

so it's BS not to consider the PS3 sales as a Blu Ray sale... cause personally why would people buy a standalone Blu Ray player when they can get a PS3... my sister has a PS3 and she doesn't play squat, it's her Blu Ray player...

by Rapper Don - 2007-06-14 15:07
» This article is just a diss of blu-ray

Forget those Blu Ray Haters... Dont the Blu Ray Playa... Hate the Game!!

First Everybody is supporting blu-ray and the reason why everybody buy a PS3 is because they actually want to play video games like PS1, PS2, PS3 and watch movies on DVD and Blu-ray!! So, who said PS3 owners just buying a PS3 as a game console? Man I owned 7 blu-ray movies and one PS3 game so far.

Ghost Rider on blu-ray is hot, I love the visual effect... i buy blu-ray cause of high defination quality on my HDTV baby, Blu-ray will never die because it is getting even better in the future... think about it, "Spiderman 3" is coming to Blu-ray even the new movie "300" is coming to blu-ray!!

Blu-ray already won for the number of sales of the disc.

Blu-ray players are expensive but PS3 is cheaper for our reason to purchase it to watch blu-ray movies.

A 200 dollar stand alone hdmi dvd upscaler/converter makes normal dvds looks about just as good as blu-ray or hd-dvd. Hell even the xbox 360s upscaling capabilities are phenominal. Tell me at least one thing that is better on the Wii then PS3. Oh whats that? Did you say motion control? PS3 does it plus other stuff. You want me to buy a console that constantly releases Mario, Metroid, and Zelda? I'm not interested in these games.

I want a system that lets me watch Hi-def movies, Hi-def games, new games, story and graphic driven games, listen to my music, play online, view pictures, last me 2 generations, and a great existing and upcoming game Library. Can the Wii do that for me? Look at games like GTAIV, Final Fantasy 13 and versus, Lair, Assassin's Creed, Haze, Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4. Can the Wii give me AAA titles like that? No.

Yes they are making money, but it isn't because the console is good. Its because its cheap, and most people buying are casual gamers.

As for your last statement, Nintendo buy out Sony? Do you how dumb this makes you sound? Sony isn't just a game company, they are an electronics giant. Nintendo, on the other hand, is gaming only company. Sony can actually buy out Nintendo if they wanted to. But Nintendo won't let them and it would be a monopoly and therefore illegal.

Resistance and Motorstorm are not "next gen entertainment to the fullest."

If you had a real gaming console with fun games that are available now, you would realize that.

Enjoy your time trial races on your Gran Turismo demo while we XBOTs have a real life badass game to play, and if you're real lucky maybe Polyphony Digital will finish your game in 1-2 years unlike with the PSP version.

Oooh in 2 months, you can play the awesome XBOX remake of Ninja Gaiden we have long fogotten. Wow for only $60 you can play the exact same game with a new playable character and higher resolution textures! It will revolutionize games forever!

Toshiba ONLY counts the ps3 as a bluray player when they need to present attach rates of hardware to disc sales.

Toshiba leads in attach rates because there are over 3 million PS3s and a lil over 1 Million BD discs sold.

Toshiba also is leading in total HD players sold with becuase the PS3 is not a standalone bluray player.

» Own both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players

1) Sony, MGM, Fox, Disney, Lionsgate are exclusive studios to Blu-ray (sample movies that could be released some day or now: Star Wars, Aliens, Die Hard, Fantastic Four, Pirates of Carribean, Cinderella, Bambi, Saw I-III, James Bond, Rocky, etc, etc). 2) Those movies will NEVER be available on HD-DVD unless those exclusive studios defect to Blu-Ray. 3) Universal is the only exclusive studio to HD-DVD (sample movies that could be released some day or now: Jurassic Park, Miami Vice, Chronicles of Rid*****, Jason Bourne movies). 4) While Universal does have a LOT of movies under their belt, it doesn't compare to the total of movies possible for Blu-Ray. (Hence, my 4axle/1axle analogy.) 5) There may be a Wal-Mart in Missouri that only carries HD-DVD (I'll take your word). However, in the Cleveland area I know of only 1 Wal-Mart that stocks a selection of HD movies (although every Wal-Mart has at least X-Men 3 on Blu-Ray). When they started in Jan 2007, they had an even mix of Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD. Now, for the last 2 months, they've had 1 4ft section with 3 rows of Blu-Ray and only 1 row of HD-DVD. 6) Picture quality varies on a per-title basis, and that argument is totally baseless (that HD-DVD offers superior image over Blu-Ray). 7) If anything, the processing power of a PS3 so incredibly exceeds that of a Toshiba HD-A2 that it makes the Toshiba look like the disc is playing in mud when you try and use special features.

» Own both; not a hater

I own a PS3 and the Xbox 360. I purchased the Xbox 360 first because of the games (I personally find that Xbox's marketplace has more stuff to browse and download). Then I purchased the add on HD DVD player cause it was 0 w/ some coupon. I honestly liked more of the movies available on Blu-ray, so I bought the PS3 for the cheapest player out there, and, hey, if there is a game I like for PS3 (Resistance), I'll buy it. Do I SEE a difference w/ the movies HD DVD and Bluray? No, not really. Do I see a difference between satellite HD and the two formats? Yes, but not something I would cry over. I can't stand SD TV or DVD now.
