"There is no format war in Australia," says Sony on Blu-ray

Blu-ray claims victory - Image 1Sony Australia is very confident in Blu-ray's dominance over HD-DVD. Toshiba general manager Mark Whittard stated that the war is "far from over," but Sony Australia managing director Carl Rose begged to differ.

"Let's get things in perspective here. Despite all the hyperbole whipped up in the media, so far there is no format war in Australia," Rose said at the Experience More event in Sydney.

To back it up, Sony unveiled statistics that show Blu-ray's massive advantage over the competing high-def format. "You've just got to take a look at the industry support and the sales figures to see that," Rose added.

A chart Rose dished out reveal that Blu-ray takes the lead in hardware alone, even without the PS3 numbers. The BDP-S1, Sony's new standalone Blu-ray player, released last month gave Sony an edge over HD-DVD players with an 80:10 ratio, he said.

"The S1 joined PlayStation 3 in the market and as a result, over 90 per cent of the High Definition packaged media sales are on the Blu-ray format," he continued. Another player with a lower price, the S300 which will ship this September, is expected to "fuel the market" in Australia.

And even that is becoming a forgone conclusion now, with all these Bluray exclusivity announcements coming in left, right and center

I know some people from there they said the PS3 is selling good there and the Blu-ray is wiping the floor against HD-DVD so i don't see how its going to win, i mean the U.S seems to be the only place that there is competition, i would know im in New York.

# Target Stores To Sell Blu-ray PlayersGuest 2007-07-26 23:26
I just read in my local paper that in October Target is planning on selling a model of blu-ray player from Sony and supposedly they are going to be displaying them along with a lot more blu-ray movies on a special end cap. There was also a mention that they had no intentions at this time to do that for HD-DVD.

for a place where the PS3 is at around USD850 it is showing off the 360 and even the Wii... people love the Playstation brand and the PS games and the history behind them... most people stick to what they know and comfortable with... the unreliability issues of the 360 surely doesn't help its cause either.

amazingly even if the PS3 is more expensive here i don't hear a lot of moaning that "oh its too expensive" "the ps3 is overpriced" stuff like that... they know what they are getting and even if it costs a lot of dollars they accept that it is not overpriced... pardon my saying so Stealth but it is the americans who moan and whine all the time.

Australia is probably the only place where the PS3 leads on a weekly basis...

just this thursday i went to JB Hifi to buy Bluray of Hostel and there were a lot of people in the Blu Ray section getting some and since there still aren't a lot of Blu Ray movies at this time the display area for Blu Ray isn't that big so the people looking for their Blu Ray movies are all cramped together some waiting for the ones in front to get out before even having a chance to browse the selection of Blu Ray... i ended up buying Hostel and Rocky Balboa.
