The DVD war will be decided by gamers |

Over at The Brownsville Herald, Kevin Garcia's written an interesting article on how the war of the DVD formats will end. According to him, the end of the battles between Microsoft's HD-DVD and Sony's Blu-ray will be ushered in by the hands of gamers like ourselves. Historically speaking, consumers have always been the ones with the final say on who lives and dies in the Darwinian process of technological advancement. Before the advent of the disc format wars, battles in the home entertainment industry occurred between the VHS and Betamax tape formats. While the Betamax had better quality playback, the VHS could store more on each tape.
Consumers chose quantity over quality that time, but you never know how future wars in the format industry turn out.
In this case, the war is a little different because of the timetable involved. If it were simply a matter of quantity over quality, Blu-ray would, hypothetically, win out because it can store a lot more data than the HD-DVD. One thing going for HD-DVD, however, is that it's already more ingrained in the public consciousness, since it's seen more exposure than the Blu-ray due to the Xbox 360's release a year ago. The players for each will also be important, as the Xbox 360, while reportedly less powerful, is still cheaper than the upcoming PlayStation 3.
The wild card for this event, however, will be Nintendo's Wii, since it's adopted neither format. This means that while the format wars will be decided by two consoles, there are three hardware types gunning for the top spot in the console wars instead.
The only good thing is that we, the gamers, will have the greatest say on which format will gain supremacy, because we're the ones who will eventually choose the hardware that supports one format over the other. The question now is, which one will you choose, and why?

Fony need Blu-Ray to win, but I believe Fony need to learn a lesson and sdtop lying.
As a bonus it's already been proven that HD-DVD offers better image quality over Blu-Ray and considering the players are cheaper aswell as the fact that Fony have a habbit to produce faulty optical drives I see a win for HD-DVD even though I want both formats to offer goods.

With Blu-ray there more game play and plus no one can tell the difference between HD-DvD and Blu-Ray. Games are making more then movies now a days.

Also the public have never decided which format to choose. It's all down to marketing. Sony buggered up Betamax despite being clearly better. Longer tape times would have followed.
Mini Disc was mis-marketed as a playback format when the huge recording/editing benefits should have been pushed.
DVD-A and SACD was just a mess so no-one went with any of them.
Same with BR and HD DVD. It's a mess now and it will be a mess for a long time. Consumers cant choose the format cos all the films are on different formats. If your two fave films are on two formats what the hell do you do? Stay away is what they'll do.
PS3 will help BR no-end but Hollywood should have put a stop to this mess. They did with DVD when different formats were competing then. Also Sony and Toshiba should sorted it too. There may be dual formats rumoured, but last I heard Sony and Toshiba have forbbiden those, so who knows. Even if we do get dual format players, having two formats that basically do the same thing is insane.
Games and gamers will choose the format my arse!!!

Only gamers and game makers show any sign or reason why the battle even has to take place. Consumers are getting smarter. No body is running out an getting the lastest, greatest anymore, except the beloved gamer....

And about the dual format players.... that is what I will be waiting for.

I am perfectly happy with DVD and don't want to have to buy all my DVD's again in the newer format! Also, the upscalers are pretty lame so I don't think i'll even bother gettin a DVD player with that built in either!
I imagine alot of people feel the same way! They are trying to create a market that no one wants or needs!

THE LEEP BETWEEN DVD's and BR/HD-DVD's isn't even big enough to call it a leep.

If you dont have a TV to compare them then dont even try and sound like you know what they look like.
I for one own a LCD 20" Computer monitor and downloaded several movies in 720p and 1080i flavors and they look amazingly better then DVD.
But where it truly shines is on my 100" projector screen. You definitly see where DVD fails to deliver in terms of quality. I watched LOTR ROTK on DVD. Then I watched the 1080i downloaded version which was over 14GB and it looked amazing. You get to see soo many details you never saw before and it was that much more enjoyable.
Blu-ray is gonna win the battle when the PS3 is widespread. Just like how the PS2 helped DVD, it will do the same with Blu-ray. HD-DVD and Blu-ray cost the same, yet blu-ray delivers more space. Its also much harder to copy. So thats why movie camps like Blu-ray, to protect their property. Thats why the porn industry backs blu-ray as well.

The fact is they didnt have an option, the blu ray player was intergrated. If your going to do a whole, who is going to win, argument you have to look at the number of people who bought the PS3 just for the blu ray against the number of HD DVD units and not the millions of gamers who bought the PS3 for the games side of things.

"The leap between DVD and HD-DVD/Blu-ray is significant.

It really isn't that amazing! I have a HDTV and I have Sky HD. The only reason I have Sky HD is because I got a stupidly good deal where I only paid £100 for the box and nothing else, not even the subscription. So I know what HD images look like compared to SD.
The leap is NOT so amazing that I want to go out and buy all of my 300+ DVD collection again on a higher res format. I'm not even that fussed about buying new DVD's on either HD DVD or Blu Ray! I don't care! Don't get me wrong, I love my films, but honestly don't think the leap is very significant!
Eventually, (i'm talkin years time) I might come round to the idea, but at the minute I am perfectly happy with what I have.

...You can play HD DVD's on standard definition DVD players!
Obviously, they won't be in HD, but this means you can play the films in pretty much any household whether they have a HDTV or not! So for people reluctant to make the transition, this is perfect!
Most households have more than one DVD player in them now, and it is going to cost alot to replace each one! Now if you had a player that could play all of your old DVD's and HD-DVD's, as well as older DVD players can can play the HD-DVD's (but not on high def), it is by far the more sensible format to choose!
Blu Ray will most likely be another format flop (which Sony so far, has had a good streek in).
