Sony Corp has recently announced that it is set to make available a cheaper Blu-ray player early this summer. The BDP-S300 is set to cost around US$ 599, and will have the same capabilities as the more expensive US$ 999 BDP-S1.

Senior VP of the home products division of Sony Electronics, Randy Waynick has said to reporters: "Eighty percent of people who buy a PS3 also buy Blu-ray movies to go with it. ...The consumers have determined that that's the format they're choosing to go with." He goes on to cite retail data from the Nielsen VideoScan that showed Blu-ray discs outselling HD DVDs by three to one.

Stan Glasgow, president of Sony Electronics, told reporters that by Christmas, prices for Blu-ray players should be down below $500. He further predicts that Blu-ray players will soon follow the steps of DVD players in becoming a commodity product. He says: "Over time, I think it will be just like DVD ."

Amusing that Sony has previously complained that DVD players became a commodity product too soon, and that turning a profit in a market dominated by US$ 50 units was hard.

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.. crap! both were not made to give people a better format, they were made to put more restrictions on everyone and charge more money. CRAP CRAP CRAP!

Yeah I heard that blu-ray players may make you download updates from time to time to access newer movies and update security concerns for older ones. Already the Playstation 3 has an active internet connection when you use it regardless.

» Smart move on Sony's part

they are nailing the coffin on HD DVD for sure! Now HD DVD cannot claim "we have the cheapest players on the market anymore".

Good news for Blu-ray, one of the features that will probably keep the lead.

With HD DVD releasing a player in the same price range, it will be less of a matter of price and more of a matter on content.

With the releases for March, I dont see blu-ray slowing down their momentum for the month.

Oh yeah HD-DVD can never reduce manufacturing costs or lower the price.

Only sony can do that.

Give me a f*cking break moron.

I wonder if fellow Blu-Ray player manufactures will follow suit. personally i don't know why companies bothered making Blu-Ray players only to have Sony dramatically undercut them with the PS3 and now with this standalone player. Once these HD players are under a hundred dollars we should see more people upgrading to the new format. It's all early adopters and PS3 gamers right now. I'm sure sony realize that they need win on the standalone player market and not just the gaming market. First to a hundred dollars will have a good chance at winning.

You are right. If other manufacturers can't lower the price and still make a sizable profit Blu-Ray will suffer. Betamax sucked because only sony could make the players. What good does it do to let other companies make the players if the company that is licensing the technology is trying to screw the companies that just bought licenses from them? I think eventually history will repeat itself and sony will not have just lost a video format but also a game platform in the process.... maybe in 10 years we will be looking back at the ps3 and laughing like we laugh at the 3DO or the Philips CD-I,

I hope Sony makes some chages very quickly.

» THERE ARE.......

THERE ARE MORE BLU-RAY MOVIE RELEASES NEXT MONTH THAN HD-DVD HAS GOT FOR THE WHOLE YEAR.......somthing to think about !

» Get out from under that rock Dj

First, why is this is PS3 news.

Second, The Hd-dvd camp anounced last month that there will be $299 Hd-DVD players at summer. So no end in the war in near. But Hd-DVD is still better quality. Just ask a real videophile at AVSfoums. Blueray is getting better (Fianlly some VC-1 encodes) but it is still catching up to Hd-DVDs 1 year lead. My money is still with Hd-DVD, even if it loses, my HD-A1 toshiba player is a killer upconverting DVD player.

Let's see you try to store 50GB worth of HD movies on a DVD...

» dude

take a joke man. i support bluray all the way. i was just wondering who would buy a $999 bluray player when you can just get a ps3 for $499/$599.

Ummm blu ray has announced release dates for most movies, all the way to the end of the year. Most HD-DVD release dates have not been announced yet. I'm not sure what the HD-DVD strategy is, but they'd better start releasing those movies (or at least announce them!)

Also who would buy a $600 blu ray player when you can get a real game console for $400?

If you buy a $1000 blu ray player you're an even bigger idiot.

» soon no companies will trust sony

Now that I think about it, this reminds me of DVD development. Sony and Toshiba were the main companies behind it. Toshiba did the majority of the work and made more profit. Sony was unhappy with their cut of the money, so made their own format later. Now it seems sony wants to turn the tables in their quest for global domination.

Sony screwed Nintendo by releasing the PS1 using technology developed during a partnership with Nintendo to develop a CD system for the SNES.

Sony screwed gamers by making them buy a blu ray player with a game console.

Sony is screwing blu ray supporters by making sure only their players are cheap and sell.

Sony is screwing loyal software developers by making a hard to program console, making it expensive, pushing blu ray more than games, and totally botching the launch.

Sony screwed Lik Sang hard core (sued out of business)

Is there anybody screwed by sony I forgot?

» hmmmm...

Sony didn't screw me. I actually wanted the blu-ray player. In fact, I'm very happy with it and buy at least one movie a week (And it's not because of the ps3's limited game selection--I watch movies more than I play games...I own an xbox 360 also and the hd-dvd add-on is lame). And actually, some of the other companies are coming out with blu-ray players cheaper than Sony's new one...under $500...so Sony still won't have the cheapest on the market. I support both consoles fully and hope they both do well...so get your facts straight and quit pestering these people.

by billy - 2007-02-27 09:43
» oh and....

although I support both companies, if you want to point fingers at a company seeking "global domination," look no further than Microsoft. How many lawsuits have they faced over creating potential "monopolies" and for "ruthlessly destroying competition?"

by jkoz - 2007-02-27 11:19
» Logically....

...who would buy this over a PS3. Come ON. Same price, one plays games, one just plays movies.... unless you really care about the remote being a controller/having to buy a separate one, that's just stupid.
