Sony recently passed on an offer made by the Official Xbox Magazine to review the Sony Bravia HDTV. It seems the reason the rep gave was that OXM is a Microsoft-focused publication, a point that is an area of conflict for them since Sony manufactures the competing PlayStation brand.

The story goes that Dan Amrich of OXM recently purchased a Bravia, was pleased with it after hooking it up with the Xbox 360 and decided to do a review of it. However, when OXM contacted Sony to request a set for the review, they were met with a declination. According to Amrich:

It would appear that the console wars extend further than any of us realized, but that's the reason given - we're a Microsoft-focused (but not -owned, I should point out) publication, and they are a PlayStation-creating company (but not the same business division, I should point out), so...just no. "I have to support our friends over at our sister company," said the representative.

After receiving this reply, Amrich writes back to confirm Sony's decision, pointing out that their review would help sell the product. Sony replied saying that they're "going to pass on this opportunity."

I have a 32" at 720p and both PS3 and 360 look great on it.

What the hell were they thinking over at the xbox magazine anyway. What's next, will they review Linux?

Sony basically just passed up a chance for some free advertisement. If the reviewer was pleased with then its going to be a good review. Sony could at least let him write the review and then look over it to make sure it doesn't bother them in any way before letting OXM put it in the mag.

But of course OXM was thinking "Lets write a horrible review for the TV so we can somehow make the PS3 look crappy to help out a company that doesn't even own us!"

"For the best gaming experience on your bravia, you can't go wrong with X360"

(or something along those lines)

Would have been one heck of a quote from such an review. Making sony look like suckers.

I think this shows that sony cant be the bigger man, It's not like microsoft makes t'vs This would have been an excellent pr move on sonys part and shows a great deal of character on microsoft side.

I think sony droped the ball yet again.

I don't blame Sony for turning it down. They want the PS3 to look great on a Bravia, not the 360. It would just be confusing marketing.

# Actually..Eclipze_ 2007-12-22 13:05
How does anyone even know that this has to do with the "console war"? The people at the xbox magazine place are actually just assuming that the reason they wont let them review it is because of the "console war" reason.

They could just not want to do it (PERIOD). So for all the posts above me and everyone after (and xbox magazine), stop assuming things.

# there is nothing to assume,ShadeyProphet 2007-12-22 13:25
Sony and microsoft dont go out for tea and crumpets. thay are competitors, TO assume that the console war has nothing to do with this is redundant. What other reasons would sony have to not allow a review from a microsot magizine? I'm sure sony hasnt stoped other publications from reviewing that modle.. No I think your mistaken Eclipze. This has a whole lot to do with the current console war and little to do with anything else.

They could just not want to do it. Theres a lot to assume lol. They could be stopping other magazines from reviewing it but we wouldnt know, but because this one happens to be microsoft everyone is all over it.

The whole console war has to do with assuming

how does this not make Sony the bigger man. Do you know anything about companies? No other companies like each other, its a war zone, always competing to be better. To think Sony would allow them to review the TV just to say "yeah Sony Bravia is awesome, and perfect for your 360"

Sony wants their TV to be used with there systems not there competitors, it just proves that Sony doesn't even want there opinion cause they don't care about MS and why should they.

By the way your reply to Eclipze_ below just contradicts your post that im replying.

Im glad Sony didn't do this, i mean its bad enough some of Sony's products get bad scores and stuff with PS3 and games, there is no need to add more to this. Sony is very successful doing stuff on there own, they don't need competitors reviewing there TV to help 360 owners buy there TV and not Sony users. They need all the sales they can get.

# Dumb but understandable.shabghai360 2007-12-23 03:17
Competitors could be a little less warlike toward each other but Sony is an Asian Company and in Asia whenever someone is unsure about a decision it is by default a 'no' answer. This is not a negative statement just a point in the difference with Asian culture. A 'no ' is easily reversed by a higher level in a company where as a yes could create backlash.

MS if they wanted to be unfriendly could rave about the quality of Philips or Panasonic. That the Bravia has such excellent colour saturation and fast reacting screen graphics is worth printing. However the Bravia is first and foremost a TV screen and not an extension to a games console. I do not believe that the input of a gamers magazine review regardless if it is the xbox or the PS will really impact overall sales.

Its NOT understandable.. because OXM has been reviewing HD Sony TVs forEVER. And they arent even OWND by MS.... they are independent of MS.

Anyone can give a review thats not the point here. The guy asked Sony through official channels to have a bravia on loan for a review. thats the point.

it's not hypocrisy it's smart business if they review it in OXM it could be very bad or very good. if they dont it's just a lost opportunity.
