Rumor: Lite-On manufacturing Blu-ray drives for the Xbox 360?

Xbox 360 - Image 1Is this true, or is this an April Fool's joke? According to the sources of technology press release site DigiTimes, optical drive manufacturer Lite-On is currently developing internal Blu-ray disc drives for Microsoft's Xbox 360 console. The sources also mentioned that Lite-On is already well into the manufacturing process and are set to ship the first batch of Blu-ray disc drives in the second half of this year.

Despite previous reports of Microsoft dismissing the idea of integrating HD DVD's rival technology into the Xbox 360, the sources were quoted as saying that Microsoft already decided to use Blu-ray technology for their next-gen console. This was after Toshiba and HD DVD's accepted their defeat in the heated format wars.

Another alleged reason for the Xbox 360's use of Blu-ray is the supposed benefits the console will have upon the switch: the next generation Xbox 360 units with Blu-ray were purported to be smaller, and will use 170-watt power supplies instead of the 210-watt power supplies currently being used by Microsoft's gaming console.

It's certainly a very interesting tidbit, but let's treat this news with a pinch of salt and a dash of humor for now, unless it persists two weeks after April Fool's Day. If you have something to say, you know what to do folks.

If this is true, it could only be for an add-on drive. There wouldn't be much point in including it in new consoles.

I think it's BS though.

» No Thanks!

I can care less about Blu-Ray or the now dead Hd-Dvd because I download media including Movies, Music, Games etc... I Have one 500 gig external hard drive, my laptop has a 250 gig hard drive, a 4 gig flash drive and my desktop has two 500 gig hard drives giving me over 1.75 terabytes of hard drive space and having over 700 gigs used already, over 300 avi movies over 200 music videos, 8,000 songs a few hundred pics and loads and loads games, why download because it takes up less space in my apt and my room thats why. I used to be a physical storage junkie with vhs and then dvd's but they took up lots of space and weren't convenient when it came to locating media. Using my network I can access media in seconds from any of my computers or my xbox 360 and vice versa.

So unless it's for gaming which it won't be even assuming they are making an external blu-ray drive for movies that sucks, unless it's for games no thanks. Oh and just so you know the xbox 360 currently uses 170 watt per hour psu's not the older 203 watt psu's once the 360's switched to 65nm cpu's the wattage use went down and the psu prronge went from three to two.

you forget that extra power is helping to stop cancer http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/24/help-cure-cancer-with-your-ps3/

however it does kinda support the point of "i thought i was buying a gaming console?"
