Photons are useful not only in crazy time travel experiments, but also vaporizing objects without generating heat. Raydiance Inc. reports to be miniaturizing a type of laser that can emit "burst of photons so intense that it can vaporize matter without creating heat."
While still in the early stages, full development of this laser can possibly remove tattoos without burning the skin, kill cancer cells without damaging healthy ones, and even be used in undercover military operations.
As of now, 30 people are working on improving this technology (number expected to double within the year) with a whopping US$ 25 million budget. The gizmo looks like an ordinary slide projector, so it's feasible to see it on the stores in the near future.
