PS3 price cut to have minimal impact on format wars, says HD-DVD group |

Followers of the almost never-ending struggle for dominance between Blu-ray and HD-DVD know that SCEE's decision to implement a pricecut on 60GB PS3 consoles may possibly make a difference in the format wars. However, those in the HD-DVD camp believe that it will only have minimal impact in the format wars, saying that the "real battleground" will be between standalone players. The HD-DVD group cited a research carried out in UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland, saying that sales of standalone HD-DVD players exceed those of its opponents by a fat margin of 70%. The number does not take into account the Sony PlayStation 3, which could also function as a Blu-ray player.
In other words, gaming does not make any difference in the format wars, or that's what the HD-DVD group believes to be the case.

Then that statistic is meaningless. You can buy a PS3 for LESS than a standalone Blue-Ray player. Anyone who buys a standalone is basically an idiot. The PS3 is the backbone for BR content.

Also i thought blurays were supposed to be more expensive than hddvd in my experiance they have always been at most the same price.

Anyway this was a pointless effort (once again...)from the HD-DVD group since if anykind of hardware has the ability to play BR's or dvd's its called (like it or not) a BR player or DVD player respectivly, if they happen to have increased functionality like the ps3 then thats even better.
So why do they even bother with this argument? Because the have nothing left to say against BR's global dominance whether is 2:1, 3:1 or 4:1.
Conclusion>The PS3 is a blu-ray player as well and should be counted as one!!

BS!
"The number does not take into account the Sony PlayStation 3"
Yup, just more garbage numbers!
Having a PS3 means no need for a standalone player which is a NEGATIVE strike at the HD-DVD format which means my PS3 purchase makes THE SAME DIFFERENCE in this format war.
YOU HAVE TO INCLUSE the PS3!!!!!

they opted to buy the DVD version of movies. The HD-DVD backers that think otherwise are kidding themselves.

I personelly don't believe M$ is truely interested in this format war, as they are more interested in downloadable HD content than optical storage.
As far as the HD-DVD group are concerned, they are in trouble and they know it with the news of the 40Gb PS3. People will buy it because its a Bluray player (and a games console), so it will have a significant effect on Hi-Def sales and make the bluray format even more popular than it is now.

Ok, let’s face it. Let me tell you something more about the middle part. If you watch western-themed horror movies like ‘28 Weeks Later (the zombie movie)’. You never think this movie is scary, you only think these kinds of movies are disgusting and horrific because the amount of blood these movies have. However, when you see eastern-themed horror movies like Grudge or the Ring, you don’t see that much blood, but you are terrified, horrified and scared because of the thrills and suspense. I mean solid monsters and zombies can’t even be matched against transparent ghost or scary little girls in white clothes.
In conclusion, the middle part of 1408 has no suspense or thrills. But, the start and ending are good, so those are what save this movie. There’s a hotel room, numbered 1408 (1408 is on the 13th floor for obvious reason; and 1 + 4 + 0 + 8 = 13, too). In the history of that ‘Dolphin Hotel’, there have been 50 something deaths in that room (Rm. 1408). Some jumped out of the window... Some killed themselves by cutting own body parts... Many were died by heart-attack or stroke... and so on.
The main protagonist (Mike) ignores the warning from the hotel manager, and then goes into that room. Once the door of the room is closed, the inhabitants (or inhabitant) have 10 minutes to go out of that room without any troubles or paranormal phenomenon (of course, the characters in the movie don’t know about this kind of information).
10 minutes passed (OMG, NOW Mike’s DEAD!!!)... The clock in the suite (Rm. 1408) is malfunctioning (sounds scary)... The clock shows ‘60:00’ and it’s counting down... Mike just thinks it’s a fake (hoax) made by the hotel’s management team (Mike you dumb fu-ck!!! Have you noticed that tissue-paper in the washroom of which shape was changed???). Anyway, Mike now starts to see some weird and scary scenes (if you at least watched the trailer of this movie, you can guess what kinds of scary scenes I’m talking about).
Here’s the main concept. The room itself is evil and possessed by evil (not a fake rumor made by the hotel’s Public Relations team). But the thing you must know is that the room can’t kill you physically; I mean the room can never touch, hit or beat you by physical means. The only thing this evil room can do is that it can make some paranormal scenes or phenomenon for the occupants to see; therefore, the resident in this room will be scared and terrified and eventually will kill themselves because they can’t stand anymore. The room showed some very sad (the death of Mike’s daughter) and horrific things to Mike; then Mike tries his best to escape from the room. He tries to talk with his wife via instant message chat, but the room recognizes (or realizes) what Mike is doing, and stops him by using sprinkler’s water.
First, Mike tries to go out of the room via the (room’s) door, but the door was as hard as a rock. Second, Mike finds a ventilation hole (vent), and he wanders around the vent and tries to go to other rooms or the main passages, but it was impossible to do so. Third, Mike tries to go to adjacent suites (neighboring rooms) via the window (he goes out of the window – he’s not jumping out... – but he realizes the devil made some tricks; Mike cannot go to other rooms by using this method).
Then the phone rings. Mike thought it is from the operator of the hotel, but it was from the devil; the devil in a female voice says this whole thing will only stop when you kill yourself, otherwise this will go on forever until you eventually die (of hunger, heart-attack, stroke or whatever). At this moment, the viewers of this movie will

Blu-Ray movies outsell HD-DVD's at a ratio of about 2:1 in North America. That's great right? Well, including the PS3, it's thought that the current ratio of Blu-Ray players to HD-DVD players in North American homes is about 5:1. Do you see the problem here? Why aren't Blu-Ray movies pounding HD-DVD's at the same clip of about 5:1 instead of 2:1? Could it be that the true HD Video consumer actually prefers HD-DVD to Blu-Ray? Maybe some of you people should actually do some research. Also, the first stand alone Blu-Ray players are going to be obsolete when Blu-Ray movies move up to the next standard, because the players can't read these new Blu-Ray Discs, and the machines themselves are not upgradeable like the PS3 or all standalone HD-DVD players.
Also, ask yourselves this... If Blu-Ray is so great, why are SONY movies showing up on HD-DVD in foreign markets? Underworld: Evolution (as one example) is available on HD-DVD (not for release in the US). This is not a mockup, photoshop, or coming soon title. It's an actual SONY movie on HD-DVD that you can purchase now.
Just food for thought. I personally don't care which format wins. My preference is that both of them stick around for awhile. There are some things I like about HD-DVD, and some I like about Blu-Ray. At least if we have both formats, I have a choice. Not a single format forced upon me.

Nope they don't prefer HD-DVD to bluray, it's just the other 3:1 ratio of people don't care so much about HD movies as the other 2:1. Oh and by the way I have noticed that a large number of PS3 owners here and in many forums do indeed own a reasonable number of BluRay titles so as far as optical storage is concerned..Blu-Ray is premier.
