Only 1 in 5 people considering HD DVD or Blu Ray! |

Well, here's something which neither Toshiba or Sony would like to hear. A survey of high-volume DVD users by online DVD trading company Peerflix on Wednesday showed that about one in five may buy high-definition DVD players or discs in 2006.
Privately held Peerflix surveyed about 1,100 of its active users, who said they buy an average of five DVDs and rent an average of seven DVDs per month, about how likely they are to buy a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player or discs.
The respondents were predominantly 25- to 44-year-old males with jobs, a wife and no children. Most had DVD collections of at least 50 discs and about a third also rented DVDs online. Six percent of Peerflix said they were "very likely" and 13 percent were "somewhat likely" to buy a high-definition player in 2006.
And I wouldn't disagree with the survey results. Fact is, in the recent fight between the two standards, so much of FUD has been spread around that few people are willing to bet on one standard. And the fight is pretty close too, what with huge juggernauts supporting either standard. I, for one, wouldn't like to be left out in the cold with my $500 Player which is useless because the studios deny to release content on that medium. And I believe that most consumers think that way.
There will always be those early adopters, the ones which are actually used as guinea pigs by the companies to test their devices. Sometimes, the early buyers are really lucky, case in point, the Sony PSP with its totally insecure firmware. Or they might be really unlucky, case in point, the Xbox 360 with all its overheating.
But the simple fact is that there's hardly a plausible to buy a HD DVD or a Blu Ray player right now. They're way too expensive. Yes you get the best video quality right now, and the bragging rights, but most of the prospective buyers would rather wait till one dominating standard emerges, before throwing away their cash.
And that won't be happening soon. At least not for another year. Daniele Levy, Peerflix's vice president of marketing said, "We were quite surprised to see that a very small number of those die-hard DVD fans envisioned moving into the high-definition format this year. With all the talk and excitement around high-definition DVD they are still a long way away from moving into that format."
Microsoft has already said that they will be releasing a HD-DVD attachment which will allow them to watch HD-DVD content using their Xbox 360. Lets see what the Sony brings to the table with its PS3. The fight to be the dominating standard is hotting up. And it's one battle I'd like to watch from the sidelines. What about you ?

2)You might be saying to yourself, when the PS3 and the 360 attachment comes out, that'll reduce the cost of players. That may be true, but with the limited stock of 360s and who knows what price the PS3 will be and the possibility that it might pull another 360 launch with limited supplies. It's not a guarantee that people will have it. I'm just babbling on and on. Sorry.

Anyway it really is a win win situation with the PS3 and the more people who buy them and the movies the faster this war will be over. How about we just get one and end this silly contest. What has Toshiba done for you lately.

If you have the money then HD is the way to go. It you dont have an HDTV already there is no reason you should get a 360 or a PS3 frankly. You really are wasting your money. Might as well get a Wii that's a higher end gamecube with an extra peripheral along with your 6 year old DVD player.
If you like movies though and people come over often It makes a huge difference. The oohs and aaahs are priceless.
And yes this research makes perfect sense. People are never ready for a new format, is not until they see it in stores or at a friends house that they go "Holy Crap i need me one of these". Its too early to be asking this question. Try the same question come Christmas time and I would be surprise if it's not 4/5 instead.

Sure you could prolly play a standard dvd, but then you loose out on the reason you bought the HD-DVD or BlueRay player!
Point is, i for one would never buy TWO players just because some companies cant agree on a common standard. And i would never buy an HD-DVD or a BlueRay player if it wont let me enjoy high def in every upcoming movie, regardless of which studio released it.

HD in video games is not a big deal, like I've said in other discussions, people have been enjoying movies and having their beleif suspended in far less then HD for ages now....HD is not going to suspend your beleif in reality in video games anymore, they have a long way to go with lighting, animations, physics and poly counts before that is happening....too be honest it just makes jaggies more apparent....I have a plain old CRT albeit widescreen TV and people jaws still drop when they see FN3 or oblivion in action....
If ANY of these become standard I see it being HD-DVD as it's already available and you can get players for $250, opposed to $1000....but I still think people will be happy with DVDs for a long time to come...

HDTV is a huge huge difference. Sure 360 looks good on any new non HDTV (maybe EDTV) but it's much better on HDTV.
The Professor is right about this one, I have seen his other post and hes really knowledgable about HD. I wonder why he's Unregistered though hmm could be an imposter.
check out the blu ray faq guys. Its little dated but its a start to learning more about this great format

Anyway I have a 42" plasma and get HDTV from TimeWarner and I will never go back! It's jaw dropingly beautiful and from what I hear about HD movies they will be even better. And once I get my PS3, holy crap I can finally watch movies and play games at super HD which is of course 1080p (well at least any games that ever support it).

Think about it, if you still have a SDTV, you can get a decent HDTV for about a grand, get an HD DVD or Blu ray for another grand, get digital HD cable for a bout 70-100/month. About 3 grand in year to watch things a little clearer. Most people could care less.
I on the other hand care alot about HD, I own two HDTV's, but dont have digital cable, and I dont plan to buy an HD DVD or Blu Ray for a LONG time. Why? There just isnt any HD content out there.... Except for my 360, which I love and play in HD Every day.
Games made the jump to HD before video, and I Couldnt be happier.

No contest! Hey Paul do you really think Blu-Ray Movies and drives will just say Blu-Ray? Of course not! They Will say High Definition! Probably in big bold letters HDTV!
Why dont you just face it, the PS3 alone has the power to win this race. But thats not all Blu-Ray's got going for it. Its a better format (which means many early adopters will prefer it) and it has lots more Electronic and video companies backing it up. Heck just the words sony on it will move some regular players.
Why do you think any Wall Street analys worth his title is picking Blu-Ray to be the winner?
Also every poll out there from consumers puts Blu-Ray at a huge advantage (search google and you will see). Its really a no contest. I do feel bad for toshiba though but they picked a wrong war to fight.
