On Blu-ray This Week: June 23 to June 29, 2008 |
Ó
The group for this week features a nice variety of genres from prehistoric action to rocking concerts from the South. We also have some lesser known, but high-quality content that you may have missed in the past but will take interest in today.
This week's cluster of Blu-ray titles starts with 10,000 B.C. which was shown in theatres just a few months back. Set in a time when might meant more than mechanics, powerful gods toyed with the fates of mortals. The story begins as tribesman D'leh (Steven Strait) and his beloved Evolet (Camilla Belle) are separated when mysterious raiders invade their village. Evolet is kidnapped by the enemy, and D'leh sets out on a quest to rescue her.
D'leh assembles a small party of hunters to join him in his journey. Together, they travel to distant lands, fending off vicious attacks from prehistoric beasts. In the end, they discover a lost civilization which possesses marvels they never knew existed. You can find out what happened the rest of the way when you catch it on the 24th.
If you're looking for more fantasy seasoned with some mystery, The Spiderwick Chronicles may just be the thing for you. Join the Grace family as they leave New York to move into the abandoned estate of their great grand-uncle Arthur Spiderwick. Mysterious accidents and other unexplained events happen in the estate on an almost daily basis, and it's up to siblings Jared, Simon and Mallory to find out the truth. This one also arrives on the 24th.
Moving back to reality, a musical treat may just be what you're looking for. If so, there's a fat chance that you'll be interested in the Southern blues-driven tunes of ZZ Top. They've come back home to their home state of Texas and you can capture the experience with the quality of Blu-ray when you catch ZZ Top Live From Texas on the 24th.
Those looking for some tear-jerking drama might want to check out Persepolis which also launches on Blu-ray this 24th of June. Set in the post-Islamic Revolution Iran, the plot follows the outspoken young lady Marjane who often gets into trouble for talking the truth in a land gripped by a strict government. Fearing that she might get into serious trouble, Marjane's parents send her to Austria to study. Here, she struggles to be accepted and later returns to her homeland after terrible bouts of homesickness.
In her return to Iran, she falls in love and marries but later comes to the realization that although she lives her country, she can no longer live there as long as the fundamentalist regime is in power. With a heavy heart, she leaves again, this time for France.
If you're feeling the summer mood and you're looking forward to a trip to the beach, the documentary Step into Liquid will be a nice appetizer. Travel to different locales where waves are monstrous such as the Texas Gulf, Oahu's North Shore, Ireland, Costa Rica, and Santa Cruz. It's as close to the real thing you can get without leaving your couch.
If martial arts flicks capture your fancy, then House of Fury should be appealing to you. It tells the tale of undercover operative Teddy who protects retired agents all the while making a living for two kids as a chiropractor. Unfortunately, an old enemy has returned kidnaps him to exact some revenge. When Teddy's kids discover what had happened, they put their martial arts training to use and set out for a smashing rescue.
Lastly, those seeking classical music should welcome the arrival of Rossini: La Cenerentola and Tchaikovsky: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 3 on the Blu-ray fold. They're rounding up this week's list as they drop on the 24th and the 25th respectively.
