On Blu-ray This Week: Monty Python's Life of Brian, King of California, and The Invasion - Image 1

Today's issue of On Blu-ray This Week features a beefier list compared to last week's two-title release and you'll be glad to know that this week's releases showcases a hodgepodge of genres. As we all know, a hodgepodge offers something for everybody to enjoy their Blu-ray home entertainment systems.

We have a religious satire, a comedy-slash-drama, a sequel, a couple of Madison Square Garden concerts, a sci-fi thriller, and a season of Damages. Movies like Monty Python's Life of Brian and King of California offer some humor into the pot, while the first season of Damages and The Invasion will have you at the edge of your seats. Audiophiles may also like a copy of Dispatch: Zimbabwe (the reunion of the Dispatch band to raise funds for charity) or Justin Timberlake: FutureSex/LoveShow (the Madison Square Garden stop in Justin Timberlake's world tour).

Anyway, let's take a closer look at a couple of releases this week.

Monty Python's Life of Brian stands out as the witty and semi-blasphemous religious satire from the British laugh out loud team. It's all about Brian Cohen, a guy who was born a couple of doors down from Jesus' stable, and his adventures that lead to a very distressing situation. Wouldn't you find it distressing if people mistook you for a messiah and thought everything you said and did was a miracle or a doctrine?

Next up is a movie that sports a widely explored sci-fi doomsday scenario: The Invasion. It's based on the 1956 film, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (which is based on The Body Snatchers a novel by Jack Finney). A space shuttle crashes and leaves debris in its path, spreading an alien substance that clung to the shuttle's hull. Imagine this, you are trying to stay awake for as long as you can because you'll have to stay awake to stay human.

Here's the complete list of Blu-ray releases this week:
  • Monty Python's Life of Brian (Sony Pictures)
  • The Invasion (Warner Bros.)
  • Damages: The Complete First Season (Sony Pictures)
  • King of California (First Look Studios)
  • Daddy Day Camp (Sony Pictures)
  • Dispatch: Zimbabwe, Live at Madison Square Garden (Warner Music)
  • Justin Timberlake: FutureSex/LoveShow Live from Madison Square Garden (Sony Music)

What can I do if a Sony Pictures Bluray disc won't play on either of my Bluray drives?

I recently bought a Sony Pictures Bluray disc of the newest "Resident Evil" movie, and it wouldn't play on either of my machines-both Alienware computers, one with a Ma*****a Bluray burner, and one with a Phillips Bluray burner. Thinking I'd bought a defective disc, I returned it to where I bought it and procured a different copy...same result-the screen just goes black and stays that way. I called Alienware, thinking I needed to upgrade the driver or software, but I have the very latest available, it seems, so they told me I should get in touch with Sony Pictures. I did just that, and they wrote back saying there's nothing wrong with their disc, and should contact whoever I got my 2 DIFFERENT Bluray burner/players from. Neither one has offered me a solution, only deny having any responsibility. I have quite a few Bluray movies, and every one of them play fine on both units-Only the Sony Pictures disc won't play. Since Sony originally developed the Bluray technology, it is ironic that only Sony movies won't play...you'd think they could offer me some solution, but all they will tell me is that it isn't their fault, and obviously they don't care whether or not people are satisfied with their product. Can anybody suggest a more viable solution than just throwing this useless piece of plastic in the trash?
