PS3People are awaiting the release of Sony's PlayStation 3 mostly because of the competition it ushers in to the next-gen console wars; but how many of those anticipating the PS3's release are also excited about the Blu-ray technology it promises? Senior Vice President of market management for Warner Home Video Stephen Nickerson doubts that the numbers won't be too impressive.

Just like all major studios (with the exception of Universal Studios), Warner Brothers can't wait to see how the next-gen format war plays out in the marketplace and has decided to publish titles both on HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Nickerson however is not sure just how long it will take for studios to realize that one format is better than the other.

With the upcoming debut of Blu-ray-equipped PS3s in November, how big is the possibility that HD-DVD players will be overpowered? Nickerson thinks chances are slim. He pointed out that hardcore gamers – those who are willing to stand in line at the wee hours of the morning just to be the first to get their hands on the latest gaming console – won't necessarily be interested in playing movies in their PS3s. Case in point: PlayStation2. As Nickerson pointed out, when gaming fans bought their PS2s, most of them already owned a DVD player and used their consoles mainly for game enjoyment.

But the times are definitely different. This time out the PS3 will be out a few months after the Blu-ray player's launch. And with the big difference between the pricing – first Blu-ray players at almost a thousand, and the PS3 at half the price – there is a big possibility that households wanting to upgrade to next-gen will prefer the PS3 so as to hit two birds with one stone: a next-gen console and movie player all in one package. Besides, Sony is really banking on their next-gen console to spear Blu-ray to the top of the format wars and will probably promote the PS3 as a 'great gaming and movie machine'.

UMDNickerson is deadset on playing the devil's advocate. He cited how Sony failed to usher in a new successful format with the PSP's UMD movies. Although the UMD format started out to be promising, PSP owners' interest for it waned with the release of more and more games. This may be due to the high price of movies but it can also be admitted that people buy a PSP mainly as a gaming – and not as a portable movie – device.

The senior vice president said it best when he said that Sony and the movie studios should know how to manage expectations. As much as there's a big probability of Blu-ray succeeding with PS3, nobody can really say with finality – as much as nobody can also say with finality that Sony is going down with this new technology. Let's all give Sony a break, sit back, and wait until it actually launches Blu-ray players and PS3s. By then we won't have to make speculations.

# Comparison with DVD doesn't hold upGuest 2006-05-17 22:15
The DVD was already much more established when the PS2 was released, and drive for it much higher. (Nevertheless, I did take the added benefit of getting a DVD player into account when I bought my PS2 two weeks after its European release, as I personally didn't have one yet). Also, many people wouldn't have minded a second DVD player for their 'other' room.

However, in this case, the PS3 is launched earlier compared to the launch of the new platforms. That has both benefits and downsides. The benefit is that the value for money is high when you get the PS3, and the downside is that demand for it may be lower (although probably less so among early PS3 adopters). If people are looking to get into HD tv, then getting both HD gaming and HD movie watching in one box can definitely be appealing.

With Disney, Fox, WB, Paramount, and MGM, I'd say Blu-Ray is a lot more formidable than people seem to give it credit for. Just the idea of 25GB games sounds good to me. The format war has not yet begun, much less is it already over as some are willing to claim. I really want Managed Copy though.... [sigh]

# Bet on Blu-rayGuest 2006-05-18 01:41
As long as they advertise the PS3 console and the Blu-ray capability together, Sony will make it clear for regular people, that it is reasonable to buy this particular console. And why wouldn't they...

I don't even see this as a format war, because some of the porn industry has already decided to make their "stuff" in Blu-ray format. That was the defining moment. =)

# what BSGuest 2006-05-18 02:10
Didn't WB side with HD-DVD in the beginning only to switch over to produce both formats? But to the point: This guy knows jack. First off dvd players werent cheap then and VHS was still big in stores and rental places. Then ps2 came along and said, "I've got these kick ass games, i can play your old ps1 games, and i play dvds so you can watch all the latest movies without having to buy a stand alone player." and *cough* ps3 sounds pretty familiar. Also with the whole UMD buisness, thats sony's fault. They over priced the movies, UMDs only worked in the psp and it was a format only publishers could use. I hope there will be a reputable poll in the future where they ask how many ps3 owners use their ps3 as a movie player. My guess is 99% will say yes.

I agree with the article... Some facts are wrong... But People who do wanna uprade to Nextgen... Are gonna definently go for a PS3... Especially if you have kids... I mean... HD Movies... And then Games to keep the kids happy... Plus the PS3 will have a web browser and stuff... So if you wanna watch a movie... Pause... Check out something online... Then go back to ur movie... you don't even have to really get up... I think this console is gonna appeal to alot of people... In the sense that its a media center more so... Then a video game system.... As long as Sony does a good job advertising it... Not to gamers... Cuz gamers know all about it... But to the common household.... If they can get the word out that its a media center and has all these capabilities... Then Sony has won... The console/format war...

Agree with you Hanus35. And to you other guys - I remember my PS2 as the first DVD-player in our house, and this was the case with many many of my friends as well. And this in a country like Norway - the world's richest country (no bragging intended - why should I?) which in most cases get new technology relatively fast. Not as fast as in Japan or North America, but it doesn't take that long for new standards to get a good hold in the market.

# we all must remember what countslansingone 2006-05-19 08:00
in video format wars its not the speed it reads or burns its not the amount of data it holds its not even how well it risists getting scratched. its how good the logo looks and how well the name sounds. so ask yourself does blueray sound better then HD-DVD and does its logo look better. cause most people i know don't know anything about data storage on discs and will i bet buy "what has a cooler name"
