Blu-Ray grabs two more companies - Image 1When Warner Bros. declared its support for the Blu-ray format, it left a rather big mark that other companies were tempted to follow, and follow they did. Thanks to a tip from Apu, we've found a recent article that reports two other companies related to Warner are going Blu-ray exclusive as well.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line Home Entertainment has confirmed that it is following the lead of Warner Bros. in "abandoning HD DVD and releasing all future next-generation titles only in the Blu-ray Disc format."

In addition, HBO Video is also doing the same, which was somewhat expected, seeing as Time-Warner is HBO's parent company. Said HBO Video president Henry McGee, HBO Video is "following the same policy as Warner Home Video."

HBO and New Line are the second and third Warner companies to declare their intentions in the format wars, leaving the BBC, which Warner distributes domestically, as the last company left to declare a format.

Once again, thanks to Apu for the tip!

" HD DVD is currently exclusively backed by Universal Studios (including subsidiaries Focus Features and Rogue Pictures), Nickelodeon Movies, MTV Films, DreamWorks Pictures and DreamWorks Animation), and The Weinstein Company (including Dimension Films). "

This is taken from Wikipedia.

» I doubt the BBC will ever choose...

Since they are a publicly funded body, the BBC would never support only one format as long as the format war continues. It would breach regulations they have. And as for proof, there iPlayer service HAS to be available on Windows, Mac and Linux for equality's sake.

HD DVD's biggest supported, Universal. But, yes this format war is just about over. If everything goes according to plan, we will have a winner by the end of this year.

» but really

i am happy that the superior format is leading in movie company support but is that really a wise move?

i mean will it hurt these companies if they release movies simultaeneously on both formats?

in any case i would understand it if the movie company wants to cut loss and release only to the more popular format.

» The movie studios want to decide this format war for us.

From what I have read, the studios think that this format war keeps at least a third of consumers from buying a high definition movie player because people dont want to be on the losing side. If the format war ends these people wont be worried about buying a movie player that will be obsolete in a couple of years. I agree with you though that they would sell a lot more movies right now if they released on both formats but they think by choosing blu ray they will sell more copies in the future. What makes NO sense to me is when video game studios release their games on only one console. They could make twice as much money if they wouldnt make games exclusive for one console and if I was a shareholder in one of these companies I would want to know why they arent trying to make more money.
