Reports of Google planning to unwire its hometown finally came true today. In the city of Mountain View, you just need a laptop or any other wireless-enabled device and a web browser to get online. Again, no more wires. As radios hanging on lampposts throughout the city broadcast Google WiFi wireless (802.11b/g) signal, one can easily go online by selecting the said signal and signing in with a free Google account.
Those inside Google, however originally thought amusingly, that the original plan was to make sure the city's employees are continuously working. But Minnie Ingersoll, product manager for Google, maintains that this actually is a community outreach program.
"This network is a way for us to give back to and engage with the community where our headquarters are. As the product manager for Google WiFi, it has been has been tremendously rewarding to partner with the local government, the schools, the library, the neighborhood associations, and all of our trusted testers to introduce the power of free, wireless Internet connectivity to the city," says Ingersoll.
Needless to say, Google WiFi is available not only to the city's residents and businesses but to its visitors as well.
