Today the Xbox, tomorrow the world... well, the rest of the Microsoft products. In a recent interview with J. Allard, he explains that eventually all online services that Microsoft provides will merge and be just one big network packaged in different forms of services.
Allard is Corporate Vice President of Microsoft and was a key figure in the development of the first Xbox and is now involved with the Zune. You may remember him making a bet concerning dreadlocks.
Allard explains that Microsoft is currently building an online service that will eventually become the back end for their online services. So while their services cater to and offer different products, it will all be siphoning media off the same network.
One example of how this works is the online services of the Zune and Xbox Live, which both draw from the same network and even use the same account. Eventually music and video services will be available from the same network, but offering content in different ways.
The potentials for this will be remarkable for Microsoft and end users, but it will also be a dream of content providers for ESPN who'll be able to provide their services easily throughout the Microsoft network: Xbox Live, Windows, Mobile... it's a capitalist's dream.

*****... this will screw us all. if they ever get that control over anything like that, every thing will go down hill. no competition = no advancement, and if their was to be any advancement in anything it will be very very slow.
