Little bugs, a pest in next gen consoles

consolesIt seems like neither snow nor rain, neither heat nor gloom of night would keep people from lining up to buy their console of choice. But what's the downside of being the first person in your neighborhood to own a next-gen console?

The recently launched units of PS3, Xbox360, and Wii are the first generation of next-gen consoles. When the Xbox360 launched in 2005, it was plagued with hardware bugs. Those who managed to buy PS3s complained of systems crashing, while the Wii was flamed for the defective straps that sent Wiimotes flying across the room.

For techies, bugs are the price to pay for first generation systems. Marketing strategies dictate product releases, how many consoles to release, where to release them, and when to release them. Glitches in the system are often fixed later on through system updates.

As some people jump at the chance of owning first generation gadgets, bugs and glitches are dismissed as minor annoyances and not as problems. Owners of first generation gadgets become unwitting guinea pigs, and their complaints are like beta testers' feedback. This issue is not limited to game consoles; it happens to just about every first generation technology around.

Anyway, isn't product testing supposed to be top priority for console makers? In a perfect world, it should be, but then how will they meet the set release dates and consumer demand?

Oh well, let's cut them some slack. First generation things - as the name suggests - are the forerunners of a certain technology. If growth is to be forever addled with bugs, the techno savvy (read: willing to equip themselves with first gen gadgets and whatnots) will always be there to volunteer their services as unpaid beta testers. And we can always hope that bugs would be minimal in the future.

hmm

thats odd, the only complaints ive seen for the ps3 'crashing' is the ebgames and gamestop demo stations where they reset every 15 minutes, there was the disk loading problem mentioned for a short time, then the sixaxis, but besides those minor things nothing like actual crashings.

Lol

The ones in EB and gamestop were probably rigged by employees. They are so anit Sony its not even funny. I went to Target and all PS3's were sold out so I went to gamestop at mall. They have this huge xbox stand sayin now in stock and ***** so I go up and ask the dude when they are gettin ps3's in. Hes like they are in the back no one wants them. I was like your a dumbass if you had a sign out side saying in stock they would be gone. A couple people over heard they were in stock and they each bought a 60gb. It was funny ***** to throw right back at the guys face.

Giant Conspiracy

In fact, it's like Sony said, those are meant to crash to encourage people to shift in crowded stores. Just for the record, I know the PS3 only crashes cause it's in a closed off airless firebox, but we shouldn't go crazy with the all game shops are anti Sony. :P THE GOVERNMENT! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

I been trying to tell people

All this news about ps3 are not selling gets on my nerves. People complained about not having any ps3 now there in and now they complain its not sellings. No one wants to help it sell stores keep hiding and saying oh no why arent we selling ps3s when there not even advertising it. It pisses me off. They'd sell if ya stop stacking them in the back. I really think microsoft is paying these stores to do that cause I remember when stores used to push for ps2 sales now there just not doing that anymore.

Pfft buggy...

Again if you keep it inside of a box. I've left my ps3 on for 3 days straight before going to and from games and movies and just not shutting it down. It's never got hot at all just the small heat from the right side were the fans blow out. I've never had a single crash and I don't expect to. Its a well built piece of machinery. Even if there are some small bugs its no where near Xbox's "Burn Your House For The Holidays". Not to mention its the highest rated blu-ray player out at a fraction of the cost. I'm not saying the xbox isn't fun also but I just find myself enjoying the ps3 more. Especially with the ability to use linux. I was looking to get a new computer and got both in 1 system. It allows me to do my school work and such taking only minimal space in my room. Just because you people don't understand the concept of value or the fact that your parents won't buy it for you is no reason to dish something if you haven't even played it. The only people that have any room to attack it is someone who actually owns the system and has used it for an extended period of time. And I had the xbox 360 from the day it came out. And when I exchanged it for the ps3 I didn't know what to expect but im very happy that I made the swap.

Thats Dumb

defective straps is not a problem, its just stupid people who insist on ripping the remote through the air
by - 2007-01-05 06:33:54
Oh please

"I really think microsoft is paying these stores to do that" Well if you *really* think that, then you're a fool. ;) No really, I'm fed up with people coming up with dumb conspiracy theories just because they can't understand why things aren't going the way they want it to go. :|

truth

Did u know that M$ promised eb and gampstop that more they sell xbox360 they'll get some free products from M$, thats what my boss told me and workers so all they trying to do is sell most xbox360 they can and say we dont even have ps3 while they r some ps3 sitting on the backroom and not put on the front of shevles

Am glad someone said it

Conspiracy against Sony. What a load of BS. So MS is the reason they are not selling on ebay as well? Honestly, Jacks post is the stupidest post i have seen on QJ, he even beats out Vietone.
by - 2007-01-05 09:11:51
This is Pure BS

Oh please, stop with this conspiracy theroy BS. There is no demand, just look at ebay. People are either waiting till march (For more "Good" games) or Sony has messed up big time. At every EB, Bestbuy, gamestop etc. They all have huge displays for the PS3, and there are tons in stock, right beside the 360 shelves.

Im unlucky

I must be really unlucky lol. I have had my wii since launch and its always freezing after two hours gameplay. Nintendo custmer service is the worst service ever it took me an hour to speak to somebody and I have emailed them twice (1 and half weeks ago) and I still haven't recieved an email back. Luckally they are replacing it with a brand new one in two weeks with all ma wii point and games transfered over :)

PS3

My PS3 has never crashed. The Xbox 360 crashed alot when it was new, and the Wii remote flew like a slingshot. That's all I have to say.
by RommelTJ - 2007-01-05 12:55:35
Nice rebuttal Blade

I agree with you 100%. I have played the Xbox and I did not like it. I have played the Wii, and while it was fun, I would not buy it. I own the PS3 since day one, and at 18 years of age, it stands as one of my best purchase to date. Not to mention that I haven't bought a single game for the PS3. I'm having loads of fun just playing demos and waiting for Motorstorm to come out. I mean, the GTA HD demo rocked!
by RommelTJ - 2007-01-05 12:58:10
You should've gotten the PS3

Here is the thing: Wii's and Xbox360 break at launch. PS3's only overheat if you block the fan. PS3's also break if you throw them from a 5 story building.
by - 2007-01-05 14:49:06
me too...

My Wii crashed once right after I downloaded the web browser. It was completely frozen, I had to unplug the power from the back to reset it. After that no problems. Also, my 360 randomly turns on with the red ring of death. If I just reset it, everything is fine. Once I'm playing a game it never freezes (maybe once), but it sometimes has trouble starting up. Guess thats the price you pay to be an early adopter.

well

i just purchased both systems , the xbox360 in november and now the ps3 in december. i gotta say that the ps3 "seems" like its better built. other than the online store , the xmb moves flawlessly just like the xbox360 w/e its called. the thing is that motorstorm compared to gears of war, i feel like motorstorm should not as good as it does for being one of the first games to come out for the system. it impresses me alot. everytime i play the demo i am shocked to see its fluent gameplay is and detail. im not saying that the xbox360 does not impress me, gears of war has to have one of the most grimmy dirty scummy maps ive ever seen. i know theres not alot going on but just to think that theres 4 characters on the screen with such high level of detail. the xbox360 is at all times is also processing 3 highly detailed characters aswell as equally detailed enemies.although they are both great machines its all about the games. motorstorm is a must have, i cant wait to play that nightmode.

Why do you post this stuff QJ

What rumors of the PS3 crashing?? WHAT THE HELL?!?!? Nobody has heard these rumors, how are they rumors? Mine is perfect, works perfect with fedora, now works perfect with ydl.. Works perfect with games. I never turn it off, still works perfect. Don't you guys ever check the facts?? Compared to the xbox 360, which was absolute crap on release... Oh good, get home to play my new game, and it turns off in 15 minutes.. SWEET!!!
by - 2007-01-05 22:16:36
keyboards

So far the PS3 totally rocks.......no shutdowns nothing! The only thing that bugs me other than the failing to update is the obvious bug hooking a usb keyboard to the system.........so far im 50/50...........half the time its a rock...........
by - 2007-01-05 22:20:07
wii

What problems have the wii had with crashing. nothing turning reseting it doesn't fix, and i'm positive that isn't a hardware issue. the only "problem" from people throwing wii-motes is caused by their stupidity by not holding the controller the way it was meant (and common sense suggests!) and swinging it around on the strap. NOT a defect. And i strongly believe the only reason PS3 isn't selling right now is a lack of games. Next to none are being advertised, and the only thing i've heard decent from it is Resistance: Fall of Man. When FF13, MG4, RE5, and similar big name games hit the system, it will take off. Right now the only real selling point is a $600 blueray player, where sony's standalone is $999 (and sony isn't advertising that!)
by - 2007-01-05 23:04:44
not selling?

I dont get where people are getting their facts from. There are still no PS3 available where I live, The people who say the stores are packed with them must live in the boonies. If youre looking at ebay and saying that their not selling you need to check completed listings and you will see that they are selling quite well. some people are so ignorant
by - 2007-01-05 23:57:41
That's Weird

Mine stopped working too so I called the number on my ds and I was on the phone for ten minutes. The customer service was amazing I thought. I thanked God the guy I talked to wasn't Indian. Not that I have anything against Indians I just find the accent hard to understand over the phone. Anyways I got a new Wii in the mail 2 days later and sent my old one back. You give them a credit card number as collateral.

bb

Just to say that blueray players are nowhere near $1000, actually i can get a blue ray burner for around £300, so i wonder, do you just get these specs of sony and in a state of hypnotic sonyism believe every word that that company says??? + welcome to the world of buisness, Microsoft gets people to hide ps3, PS3 has VERY VERY racial and contro ads, especially when they tried to present to be young boys wanting a psp on a blog, ha ha noobz got caught. Sony stole rumble shock or 'Dual Shock' and has been sued in the past for it. So noobz, 360 dont crash that much, mine never has done that (maybe M$ fiexed that after a while) and it doesn't burn up like a mother as some suggest. PS, sony's PS3 linux support is terrible, no access to the cell and or graphics so whats the point??? Microsoft have XNA, which is totally ace, i have the program and at the moment am building a 3d FPS for the 360!
