Linux Foundation to Microsoft: Bring it on! |
Ó
Last week, Microsoft issued a statement that the Linux and Open Office makers could be violating hundreds of patents with the open-source development of the two popular software sets, prompting news sites and blogs to issue different reactions. For their part, the Linux foundation didn't take it well. As a matter of fact, their general ire was invoked, and they're as unfazed as ever in the face of a potential patent war. An article in businessweek written by a Linux community member proves so.
The article described Microsoft as a "threatened giant" and a "rational actor" all in one. According to the analysis, Microsoft makes about US$34 million a day mainly on the strength of its Windows OS and Office application suite. When these two big assets are under competition, measures must be taken to quell the uprising.
The article, echoing other Linux-community responses, described Microsoft's action as fear, uncertainty and doubt-causing measures to scare off people who want to make the move to open source software. That way, even if they only delay the ship-jump, the giant would have saved a bundle already.
The article also pointed to the current patent system as a flawed one that can be abused by powerful companies to have their way with smaller competitors. This, in a sense, stagnates the competition and leaves little motivation to innovate.
As a parting shot, the article stated that the Linux Foundation is willing and ready to use its considerable resources to defend its turf and fore counter-claims against Microsoft. The article also urged Microsoft to cooperate in improving software patent laws instead of resorting to the tactics that it uses now.

**** Microsoft, its $#!++y Vista, XBox and everything else associated with them. People hate on MS because of the BS they pull to shut down others to form their monopoly holdings.
So here are the people at war with microsoft. Apple Sony The entire Linux userbase and i guess nintendo too
Yeh they are being threatened from every direction all at once, I surpose this is what they get when they monopolise things. Apple are attacking from the computer and OS orientated side of things, which surprisingly is doing quite well, as I think Apple now have 7% of the market now. Also Apple are also attacking their Zune, which Apple can safely say is in their hands at the moment. Sony are attacking the console side, and microsoft can't afford another mistake. Sure at the moment they have earnt a lot of money from their 360, but the PS3 and rubbish as it is doing at the moment is still a major threat. Plus all the money Microsoft has lost from advertising in Japan and Asia is sure to damage their share prices. The Linux userbase is an up and coming threat to their Word document program, as it costs nothing and does exactly the same as MS Word. And Nintendo are just like sony, playin the console war against Microsoft, and are currently winning. Overall Microsoft has lost a vast amount of money advertising Vista in Asia and advertising their 360 in Asia. Their company is slowly crumbling. They keep investing into new companies instead of focusing on one. They are basically fighting two wars on four fronts, just like the Germans did in World War 1 (lol yes I can compare Microsoft to the Germans). If they dont do something soon they are going to become the underdog again.
given the chance, options and goodies, i will gladly replace my windows OS with Linux. but that may take a long long time to happen because MS aint gonna just give up those fights so easily. talking about the most wealthiest person/company on earth and still wants more.
Hand and hand. Someone needs to cut the legs off of Microsoft. Too bad this is just another article about Microsoft trying to cut the legs off of someone else and them getting pissed.
yes, incredible isn't it.
