An unusual invention proves to be a huge benefit for people with an strange and debilitating disease. Crigler-Najjar syndrome causes people to turn yellow and sometimes become immobile if they have too much bilirubin in their system. Essentially, they are missing a very important enzyme that breaks down this waste material. To counteract this the person has to expose their skin to a blue light on a daily basis for long periods of time, which often limits their mobility.
Philomeen Engles, a Dutch student, was asked by the photonic division of Philip to create a medical application for the Ledfoils (bendable disks) they had developed. So he designed a cloth that consists of LED lights that were integrated with Ledfoils. The cloths can be used as a sleeping bag or pants. It still needs to be plugged into the wall but this is a much improved solution for patients as previously they would have to remain seated under lamps.
Unfortunately the Ledwrap has not been tested for medical use yet, as there are other considerations to take into account. But Engels is hopeful that things will go well and it will be ready within the year.
