Internal HD DVD drive for Xbox 360 to be revealed in 2008 CES? |
Ó
Brier Dudley of the Seattle Times speculates in a recent article that Microsoft will be "preparing to license the Xbox gaming platform to consumer-electronics companies," particularly Toshiba, an HD DVD backer.
Dudley furthers that an alliance between the two would benefit the HD DVD format not only in the format wars but also in the Japanese market where the Xbox 360 console remains behind its competitors in sales. Dudley goes on to speculate that:
Microsoft could also make a splash by announcing plans to give the Xbox 360 an internal HD-DVD drive, putting it on par with Sony's PlayStation 3 that has a built-in Blu-ray drive.
While this isn't exactly a solid prediction, it does make for good speculation. With talks that the competition between HD DVD and Blu-ray coming to a stalemate, we may see Microsoft and Sony make some deciding moves that will finally conclude the format war.
On the other hand, they may make some moves that will extend the war till the next New Year. At any rate, we'll have to wait for CES 2008. Check back for updates.

technically, there's just too many factors going in to make this not happen. such as, what happens to earlier 360 adopters? do they have to buy another release of the game? one that's on DVD9 instead of HDDVD. I'm not sure, but wasn't there other issues regarding reading speeds?
I would put my source, but I forgot, don't flame on me. but a developer interview said that most bluray space is being used for redundancies to compensate for inefficient coding on PS3 cell processors. but that's beside the point here.
other than to help sales in japan, does microsoft need to make such a gamble with putting these things in 360s? well, being the greedy behemoth m$ is, i think they might actually try this. but its still a rather stupid move imo.
well i think microsoft would not release games on it. in the past they said that they wouldnt release them on hd-dvd to not leave people out who dont have the external hd-dvd drive. i think they could just add it to the "elite" model to keep up with MS's way of making so you can buy only what you want with the 360.
i wonder how overpriced this will make the ps3 look if it does come into fruition, not a lot i predict.
microsoft*****s !!!
The Xbox 360 is profitable right now, Microsoft is not going to mess with it. It probably will be at least two years until they come out with a new system and by that time the hardware available for a new console will be a lot better than the PS3's hardware. Even if HD-dvd is getting its butt kicked by blu-ray Microsoft still wouldn't put a blu-ray drive in their new console because that would mean Sony would make money off of every console and game made with blu-ray technology. That would be like Pepsi using their main rival Coca-Cola as a supplier, it just isn't going to happen. Toshiba should be begging on their hands and knees for Microsoft to put an HD-dvd drive in a new Xbox because it would put them on equal footing with blu-ray.
But everyone needs to know that it will be just for movies.. not games...
Other thing yworob, why later will be a better hardware than the ps3 in a few years? if you said they will made a better hardware one by the years will pass then the PS3 too don't you think? SONY will no be fall behind...
Anyway not everybody will buy the xbox360/HD-DVD combo... it's not like everybody will change their 360 to buy that one. It's not like the troyan horse in the PS3 that everybody will have it.
Another thing the HD-DVD players have a low price now so maybe they will raise it just 50 dollars or maybe the elite will low the price and this one will be the same like the elite now...
Anyway all this is just my opinion...
This is great if it doesn't add any additional costs to the console. If it does, I won't by the HD-DVD version because there aren't too many movies that I need to have that are on HD-DVD and I'm sure that Blu-ray is the winner of the format wars. Also, I don't have an HDTV right now so any DVD version would be just fine. But if the HD-DVD versions of the movies were to have additional features....... it may turn the tables. But if you're going to add additional features, you might as well put it on the Blu-ray version because it has more storage capacity.
Someone_Pr said he thought that if Microsoft comes out with a new console in a couple of years, that is more powerful than the PS3, that Sony would come out with a PS4 right away to compete with them. That is not going to happen because Sony has already said that they plan on having a 10 year life cycle for the PS3. If they came out with a PS4 in two years then nobody would by a PS3. Microsoft on the other hand has to come out with a new system with an HD-dvd drive because as games get better and more detailed every year they need more disk space to store that information. Halo 3 and PGR4 both ran out of disk space and had to have parts of the game either left out or changed to accomodate the space available. Xbox 360 games years from now will either have to be multi-disked or have their multiplayer levels downloaded over the internet on to the harddrive. Nobody wants to do that so that is why I am pretty sure that a new Xbox (720?) will come out in a couple of years. Microsoft wont announce it though until its less than a year from coming out because once they do announce it people will stop buying 360s so they can save up money for the new system. If their smart they will have either Halo 4 or Gears of War 2 as a launch title which would guarantee the consoles success at launch time.
"That is not going to happen because Sony has already said that they plan on having a 10 year life cycle for the PS3."
The original playstation continued to sell well for years after the launch of the PS2. The PS2 (launched almost 8 years ago) continues to sell well despite the launch of the PS3. Each generation doesn't need to wait until the end of the last before being launched!
Sony didn't expect the Playstation or the PS2 to sell as well as they had so many years after launch. Therefore with the PS3, they decided to design the console with 10 years in mind from the start (hoping to repeat the success of their previous consoles), hence the statement of a 10 year cycle for the PS3.
Therefore the assumption that the PS4 will follow at the end of the PS3's life cycle is wrong. Just look at the PS2 today, it's cycle is approaching 8 years now and it's still selling well!
So like Microsoft with the next XBox, Sony are currently working on the PS4 to launch perhaps 5-6 years after the launch of the PS3 (i.e. before end of 2012), not 7-8 years as you suggest (up to 2016!).
Think about it, there's no way are Sony going to allow MS to have a significantly more powerful console on the market for 3-4 YEARS! It's just not going to happen. :)
That works for me, if they can add a HD-DVD player, new 65nm CPU and GPU, HDMI, and still sell it for $400 I'll upgrade mine.
Shoot, I'd pick one up myself...
This is just another cheap way for Microsoft to get our money. Doesn't every one feel cheated when a new version of the XBox comes out? For one, we aren't talking about minor changes, and two you're playing experience drops with each new version. Developers don't want to make games for those stuck in the past still using SD-TVs. Why would they? SD-TVs aren't even sold at most stores now.
It's funny that M$ told us that they are trying to make a system for the "casual gamer" but they are really just making a system for suckers.
Just watch, in another six months M$ will roll out with a newer version of their $-Box. At the very least, M$ should have included HDMI in every Box and not just the Elite. What a rip-off to the general public.
