Xploder's HDTV Game PlayerIf there's one thing you could do to your beloved PlayStation2 to boost the gaming experience a notch higher, what would it be? I know, all of us wished we could move that digit one figure higher to get the ultimate hardware of this gaming generation - so near yet so far 'ey? Well our radar back at the QJ observatory has scanned something that might give us the next best thing - an HDTV Game Upgrade for PS2.

What exactly this product from Xploder does, is allow PS2 games to be played in High Definition. With both next-gen consoles, Xbox360 and PS3, already boasting of High Definition formats, Xploder's HDTV Game Player is set to give PS2 a nudge by giving it connectivity to your HDTV sets. So how can this enhance your standard game's image quality? With these features:

- Select a HD 720p or 1080i setting to give a clearer, crisper picture quality for all PS2 games.
- Play games in Enhanced Definition (ED) TV 480p mode; a higher resolution for improved image quality.
- Choose from a variety of superior VGA options.

Driven by proprietary Xploder software, you simply put the disc in the PS2 console and use the on-screen interface to select the optimum configuration for your system (HD, ED or VGA modes) from the options menu. The details are automatically saved to your memory card, so thereÂ’s no need to reconfigure the settings every time you use your console. The supplied high-quality RGB component cable also connects the PS2 directly in your HDTV to ensure superior image quality.

We may not be able to boost our PS2s to three, but it may now be somewhere around 2½.

It is an interesting product.

I probably need to read a review of it before buying it.

So......

Who wants to be the guinea pig?

More importantly, where can we buy this thing?

It is not listed on their site.

Yes, where can we buy it, and more importantly, what does it cost? This would be great for all my ps2 games, but if it doesn't come out until October or something, might as well wait for the PS3.

We were looking for it too, but the press release didn't mentioned anything about its price and availibility, so I guess it's still on TBA status.

....had to check my calendar , to see if indeed today is the 1st of April.

C`mon , post #4 said it already , it`s going to be a Jag-Fest.

All this thing ( whatever it is ) can do is give you connectivity.

It`s going to be the same......stuff , only bigger.

And bigger is not automaticly better.

Just try to watch a videoclip on YouTube in fullscreen and you get the idea.

The PS3 will have hardware emulation.

That means it will upscale the old games to an HD resolution.

And it will use some kind of algorithm to smoothen edges.

Not in a taylor made way like software emulation can do , because it has to work for every game.

But with the upconversion that PS3 hardware emulation can achive , you are in some sort of acceptable reality when it comes to playing your games from the last century on your futuristic flatscreen.

This product would have been great two years ago. However, it has been announced that PS3 will do almost everything this product boasts. It's hard to imagine that this product will take off unless it's inexpensive.

this isnt amazing at all.. unless it is an upconverter then it has already exsisted for a long time. its simply HD cables that are already available for PS2 for the longest time.

this is the most stupid thing I saw for a loooong time...

HEY, it's not like the ps2 will ouput in HD, it's just a converter to plug your ps2 on an HD TV!!!

this mean the game will look THE SAME!! and will BE the same, you won't have HD until the GAME is done in HD, it's not like putting a VHS video player with an adapter to convert it in HD will upgrade the image you dump ass you think that way!

man this is sooo stupid, HD converter.. what next, HDMI converter? and you'll think "WOW now I don't need a next gen console", you are so stupid, the worst I saw, the definition is given by the source, the video game, the movie, nobody cares of a converter, it's not gonna be greater, it'll just plug in an HD TV!!!

arrr, so stupid people on the net...

Oh, and sorry anyway, It's not by being insulted you'll understand, I know...

ps: @#11, exactly

What if it boost the resolution to 1280 or higher, can a ps2 handle these resolutions with a good framerate? Can't be other then just a sort kind of upscaling thing...

# What it probably doesGuest 2006-08-01 03:56
...is upconvert the signal like today's standard DVD players can do. Kind of an on-the-fly interpretation to a higher resolution. The net result would be quality noticeably better than just scaling, but not nearly as good as true HD. So think somewhere in-between.

# PS4 got it right lolGuest 2006-08-01 05:24
almost.. the upconverting DVD players cost signifgantly more than the non upconverting so if you're in the market for a new A/V reciever just get a reciever with upconverting capabilities
