HD DVD Defeats Blu-ray at Lower Revenues...For Now

Blu-ray vs. HD DVDFor now, some are saying that Round 1 goes to the HD DVD corner.

By Round 1 we mean the number of players sold. Home Media Retailing quoted a NPD study that says HD DVD players outsold Blu-ray players by 33% during their first six weeks after launch. HD DVD sales began in April, while Blu-ray players followed in June. Which could be one factor why HD DVD fared well in the sales department.

Another reason why HD DVD emerged ahead its counterpart for now is the fact that the only Blu-ray play currently offered is Samsung's $1000 BD-P1000, while HD DVD players are offered from multiple vendors for prices as low as $450. On the bright side, Samsung captured higher revenues that all HD DVD player manufacturers combined. According to NPD, the BD-P1000 achieved 42% more revenue than HD DVD players during their first six weeks.

Still, high-def players have yet to have a significant role in the market. NPD said that HD DVD and Blu-ray players accounted for only 0.4% of all disc player sales. DVD players came in at 86.2%, DVD recorders at 13.4%.

The HD DVD camp will need to prep up for round 2 - when the PS3 comes out and floods the market with BD players. Let's wait and see.

Too many people are underestimating the importance the PS3 will actually play in this. I can't see any consumer going out to get an HD DVD player if they own a PS3.

Remember they were talking revenue when talking about the samsung...so it's more then double the price of the cheapest HD-DVD, so if it sells half as much, it will still make the same revenue...

I think HD-DVD will just get more popular, it's still cheaper then a PS3 for those just concerned with HD video and not games. Also people know the name DVD, blu-ray will probably freak most normal consumers out/away...

I wouldn't get either format for at least a year, if not more.

# There are only Toshiba players out thereTheProfessor 2006-08-19 17:25
Remi are you confusing the fact that Toshiba has different players? Is not by "different vendors" as you put it.

Also it worth noting that the samsung player includes support for 1080P, HDMI and a Memory Card Reader.

The Cheap $500 HDDDV players don't have any of these features. Toshiba does have a 750 version that includes just HDMI. Just goes to show you how expensive 1080P and HDMI support is.

Toshiba is actually taking a loss on these machines which is sad because they are doing so for market penetration. Yet even thought they had a huge headstart and price advantage they are doing just ok.

Come november there will be around 4 more BD players by different manufactures on the market, and Toshiba really has to be worried about the PS3. Toshiba will be overwhelmed and shadowed. Sony can actually afford to lose money on it's PS3 and it matches up to the price of a HDDVD player. I see this format war thing being over by january next year.

This holiday season will be a Blu-Ray Holiday.

"This holiday season will be a Blu-Ray Holiday."

you really think so?

I highly doubt it.

"HD DVD and Blu-ray players accounted for only 0.4% of all disc player sales. DVD players came in at 86.2%, DVD recorders at 13.4%. "

you think that Blu-ray alone will jump up over 85% in just a couple of months?

I highly doubt blu-ray(even combined with hd-dvd) can jump up pass 30%.

This holiday season will be a DVD Holiday.

If there is no content im not buying,I can get alot of whats out there through my network provider, and most of that is "previously viewed"which is fine...since most of any new release will be "previously viewed"other than the few movies that look even remotely interesting in 06.I agree with wait.

The only intelligent choice with this format situation is to wait....

Enough of the fanboy chatter, this is a format war that will take several months to even get started..... much less finish.

so far, all the commercials i see are "Available on DVD and Blu Ray!" i haven't seen a single advertisement for HD DVD, and i live in Los Angeles. you'd think that the first push towards a new technology would start here and spread outward.

and like Professor said, come November, there will be 2 million PS3's (read: Blu Ray players), in peoples homes. to say that a console can't have an affect on consumer's choices is silly. i know quite a few people who had no interest in DVD until they got their PS2. then, when game drought season hit, they bought some DVDs to tide themselves over. so far, HD DVD has only penetrated a few thousand homes. the PS3 is going to sell out. GUARANTEED. 2 million versus 10,000 is no contest. and then, if Sony manages to ship the additional 2 million PS3's by end of December, those will sell out also, and there will be 4 million Blu Ray players in peoples homes. *and* it's a games machine also? and for an equal, or better price than HD DVD? (HD DVD players are $500. the cheapest PS3 is $500, and is still capable of delivering 1080p visuals via component cable. the only Hd DVD player that can output 1080p is going to be $800).

me, i've been holding off buying any movies on DVD (new movies, i mean), until i get my PS3. then i'll buy the movie on Blu Ray, just because my PS3 supports it, and the price difference here in LA between Blu Ray and standard DVD is slim ($19.99 - $22.99 for DVD, $24.99 - $29.99 for Blu Ray). when, say Superman Returns and Spider-Man 3 come out, i'll be picking up the Blu Ray version.

# HD-DVD is winning for a very funny reasonSherjakt-Flawke 2006-08-20 17:15
The only reason HD-DVD is currently winning is because most of the players are cheaper. Why? Because the first generation HD-DVD systems lack an important feature that they will only add in later. 1080p Going from 1080i to 1080p makes such a huge price difference. Personaly, I would not even touch the HD-DVD discs or players with a ten meter pole. The format does not require publishers to release their content in 1080p, meaning that they are not really pushing towards the HD revolution. Blu-ray requires it though. Plus when the PS3 comes out, the same scenario will happen as back with the PS2. It will be a really cheap Blu-ray player, that can do 1080p output, meaning instant win for the format. And on a last note, the 360 HD-DVD add-on won't do crap. The thing won't be able to 1080p HD-DVD discs, so it is pretty much useless.

i love how this whole war is over 1080p, im gonna laugh when you realise to the average consumer this doesnt mean *****, people are happy with dvd right now, let alone hd-dvd and blueray, this technology is going to take years to take off.

The Sony fanboys just won't give up, Blu-Ray is being annihilated in movie sales. It's gotten horrible reviews for it's inferior picture quality. It's overpriced. A kiddie gaming machine isn't going to make any difference in the home theater market. Blu-Ray is already dead.
