Toshiba and Samsung

For ages people have been asking for the HD-DVD and Blu-ray war to come to an end, but neither side has backed down. Here's something that could change all that. Just as Toshiba boss Atsutoshi Nishida calls for a unified format, along comes Samsung and Toshiba with a simple yet effective idea - a Hybrid HD-DVD and Blu-ray player. The device is planned for a release either later this year or in 2007, and will combine technology from Samsung and Toshiba, making a top-notch player.

Samsung and Toshiba will both manufacturer their hybrid next-gen media players at the same plant, a joint venture between the two. However, Samsung appears to have put themselves into a position to call Sony's bluff. According to the licencing agreement between Samsung and Sony for developing Blu-ray, partners aren't allowed to develop HD-DVD.

Obviously, Sony aren't going to push this. They won't risk a confrontation with Samsung, as they are currently Sony's backbone in their quest to roll out Blu-ray across the world. It was a gutsy move by Samsung to violate the licencing agreement, but in the long term it should be better for all. Hybrid players will be the best invention since...well HD-DVD and Blu-ray players. The only thing that's worrying me is the price. If this player is too expensive, it'll flop faster than you can say Betamax.

» this is great news

WHy do people still mention Betamax as a Flop?

it's still being used in the industry, mostly for television broadcasts and such.

Could be a flop for personal use, but still used indeed.

Now. this is great news as well.. everybody wins here.

Price shall be steep, or prolly be around the same as the "dvd-vhs" types- (of course in a proportioned range)

» WELL DONE!

well done! at friggin last! this was obvious from the start!! I've been saying this all along!

All this talk about blu ray vs. hd-dvd! This war was never going to take place and oh look, this just proves it!

The only disadvantage of this is that the hd-dvd drive and blu ray drives in the ps3 and on the 360 are going to be useless because they will only play half of your high def dvd collection lol!

» Of course!

Why nobody thinked it before? Since all stuff in our lifes became digital, all these stuff can be copied, integrated or modified. With disk players this is not different.

» i piss on blu ray

to number 6 ... you are right..we want one format that is cheap and effective..just the way we like our women... blu ray is a joke just like minidisc and umd..actuially i think UMD is not only a spectacular failure but a hilarious failure... Betamax was a good format but VHS was just as good and killed beta based on play lenght.. People saw that you could fit 2-8 hours on vhs as opposed to 1-2 on beta..beta soon added additional play lengths but it was too late.

blu-ray isn't sony's format, they just support. and why the hell would u want hd-dvd to win anyways. it's got less space, the disks can be scratched, the backing isn't anywhere.

blu-ray winsz hands down.

Reguarding the article, I'm scared to hear how much it costs. Also, it's prob the best way to go... but people are still going to be confused.

I almost forgot Blu-Ray DISCS (not disks) couldn't be at all damaged.

» MD is popular, not in NA

MD was very very popular in Asian and European countries. It was the most convinient format for recording songs until MP3 came out. Then, of course it phased out. 9/10 people at that time would buy a MD walkman instead of CD player.

You guys don't know it because it wasn't fully brought to North America. You know at least 50% of Japanese electronics never make it here, cause people in NA don't stay on top of technology and wouldn't spend as much on it. NA is one of the slower continents in providing consumer technology. You name it: cell phones, computers, home appliances, televisions etc etc...

""""For ages people have been asking for the HD-DVD and Blu-ray war to come to an end, but neither side has backed down." This stuff is new technology there has been no ages...u dumb *****... """"

actually, trying to come up with a standard format and trying to come to decision on one, as a group effort and in the business of these formats, the companies have been fighting over it ever since the beginning (probably been about 7 years now or so)

new technology or not to the public is is old news to the makers... they've probably started on the next next gen formats already

» hang on!

Toshiba are the major backer for HD-DVD and they are releasing a player that also plays Blu-Ray? That is a decidely strange marketing strategy if your wanting your own format to win the war.

You can't tell me it's just to give the consumer freedom of choice. If you have got a format you have invested time and money in you don't produce one that also plays a format that could render your own obsolete! Absolute madness.

But at the same time...Yay...Come on the Blu-Ray!

» No. 15?
