Games consoles aren't really used for movies, says research firm |
Ó
War between high-def formats is hot, with software sales in favor of Sony. It's no secret that the PS3 alone brings Blu-ray players to millions of households, and 360's HD-DVD drive attachment can attract plenty of customers. Even so, research firm The Diffusion Group have found out that game consoles aren't that significant in the numbers of movies being played at home.
Research based on 2000 households with consoles that double as multimedia players reveal that only 13% actually view movies on the same machine they play games. Out of that, 74% are still using the good 'ol DVD for their entertainment, while almost a quarter enjoy online services to purchase or rent videos online.
Director of primary research and author of the report Dale Gilliam III stated:
TodayÂ’s next-generation games consoles such as the Xbox 360 or Sony PS3 are true digital multimedia powerhouses. Yet very few of these devices are connected to the Internet and, even though these same platforms may feature a high-definition DVD playback system, very few consumers are using them for non-gaming media applications.
- Approximately half of U.S. broadband households have at least one game console (GC) in the home with 15% having two or more game consoles;
- Among broadband households that own a game console, 52% have a console in their family or living room, compared to 24% with a GC in the second bedroom, and 21% with a GC in the den or game room;
- Though the majority (80%) own a console capable of playing DVDs, only 30% stated that they owned a console and that it actually enabled DVD playback – a fact that demonstrates how poorly many consumers understand the capabilities of today’s game consoles and a major barrier to persuading consumers to start using these platforms for non-gaming media consumption.
- Among those that own a game console connected to the Internet, 42% have used their game console to watch an Internet-based movie on their TV.

Most people use their DVD Players instead of their console because they are cheap and easy to use for everyone. I use my PS3 for Blu-ray because I dont have a separate Blu-ray player. I think this is more of a last gen study....
i have a home theater which the ps2 can't even begin to touch so i don't see any reason why i should use the ps2 back then... but before i got that home theater i just use a regular dvd player and when i watch a particular dvd which has scratches causing the movie to skip or freeze... i just take the dvd out and plug it into my ps2 and it reads all these dvds without any problem...
i have stopped buying dvds since ps3 launch... i buy movies every thursday of the week around 1 to 3 movies (blu rays) at a time regardless of if i already have that movie in dvd or not... i'm just expanding my blu ray collectin.
When I read the first 3 bullet points, it makes me think the 4th is from a different study. I mean, most people don't know their system plays dvd's (3rd point) but they've watched an "internet-based movie" using their console. What did they do send out forms to the dumbest tech savvy people they could find?
Funny i use mine all the time for DVD's, and now hire out Blurays from Blockbuster ...
They prolly did one survey ... 100% results ... hahaha
i got a pretty nice collection of blu-ray movies.. DVD's look like crap now!
I thinks they are referring to the Xbox360 and downloading movies off of the internet.
Rather not a disc based movie.
There retards trying to say that.
(Very off topic) Da PS3 Rainbow Six is crazy. I played with 4 awhile.
I also use my console to watch films, having a ps2 (and now a ps3) means I don't need a seperate DVD/Blueray player. It's so much easier just having the one.
I'd be surprised if those results were completely accurate!
My Xbox 360 was the most expensive DVD player I ever bought. I watched more movies on it thin I played games.
While possibly true, it IS significant to the format wars. Even if NO movies are played on the millions of PS3s out there, those people are not going to turn around and buy an HD-DVD player if they DECIDE to start watching hi-def movies, because they already have one. That demographic that owns a PS3 is essentially inaccessible to the HD-DVD market. Stick a fork in HD-DVD.
This "research firm" is f***ing retarded. Everyone I know with a game console DOES NOT have a separate DVD player. Idiots.
This study can't include the majority of Blue-ray/HD-DVD customers since as of last week there were only ~100,000 stand alone Blue-Ray players and 1.4 million PS3's and yet somehow Blue-Ray was outselling HD-DVD 5 to 1. Thus 93% of the Blue-Ray population mush be watching Blue-Ray movies on their PS3.
For HD-DVD the numbers were ~150,000 standalone players, and ~150,000 HD-DVD attachements for the 360, so ~50% of the HD-Movies were played on a console.
in total, that adds up to ~1.8 Million Next-Gen Media players ~1.5 Million of which are Gaming Consoles.
thats ~83% of the next-gen media market.
There is no way that so many people with next-gen consoles don't realize the media playback capabilities of their console.
DVD's i can understand, since most people already have DVD players, and don't need to even think about using their console to play dvds. This study is definatly more related to last-gen media, and does not focus on the new media formats; the study is not relevant to the next gen Gaming Console Race.
I'm not sure if this data is reliable but I think this could be why people think the PS3 is expensive. They think it's a games console and don't realise it's awsome capabilities. Maybe sony should ADVERTISE THESE FEATURES and remove the "this is living" crap.
This study either included XBOX 360 owners w/out the HD-DVD add-on and no PS3 owners or it is a complete fallacy. There are very few other explanations! With an XBOX 360 at $400 and it's HD-DVD add-on at $200 and the PS3 at $600 w/BD very few people bought that add-on or spent the extra money for an PS3 without the intention of using it for more than gaming. I know for a fact that BD movies and to a lesser extent BD games played a large role in my PS3 purchase.
The only other explanation that I can see would be that a very large portion of the group polled did not have a proper home theater with a complete surround sound system and HDTV capable of displaying HD movies.
I have watched many BD movies and a few HD-DVD movies and BOTH of them with the proper display unit and sound system knock the socks off of standard definition DVD's. I have a hard time watching DVD's on my HDTV anymore because the difference between the formats really is that great. DVD's look colorless and blurry in comparison. The difference in color saturation, brightness, and sharpness is nothing less than amazing.
This just sounds like grossly misreported news either intended to denounce the addition of BD to the PS3 or against both of the new HD movie choices in an attempt to reduce consumer interest in the new formats. In my opinion it's both a worthless study AND article.
Of the 9 people I personally know who own a PS3, all of them buy Blu Ray movies and watch them on their PS3's. None of the 15 or so people I know who own an XBOX 360 bought the HD DVD attachment. They do not buy/watch HD DVD's. One of the 360 owners uses the movie download service and he loves it. I haven't witnessed the service but it sounds good. I'm sure the service will catch on with some of the others in due time.
PS2 is the first and only dvd player I've ever used. And the PS3 will most likely be the first and only Blu ray player I'll ever own or need.
then you have alot of poor friends.
you are a flaming piece of ***** fanboy.
l love how you guys think since you know 10-20 people you can make your own survey.
Much of fanboy morons.
Xbots have figured out how to download movies off the net, but they don't know their console has a dvd player. I never said they were talking about xbots, but I glad you said it for me.
What does that mean? I guess you mean "bunch", but where to stupid to type that. Just as you are too stupid to see this study is flawed in one way or another. This survey is saying that only about 1 in 3 people with a console that play dvd's even knows it plays them. That seems a little off.
