Well, the guys at High-Def DVD Digest got a chance to review two of the first HD-DVD Movies, along with the Player itself. The movies, The Last Samurai and Serenity look beautiful anyways, so viewing them in HD quality would be a dream come true for any true-geek.

SerenityThe Last Samurai

The equipment which they used :
  • HD-DVD Player : Toshiba HD-XA1 HD-DVD Player (via HDMI)
  • Sound Processors / Amplification : Denon AVR-1803 A/V Dolby Digital/DTS Surround Processor
  • Video Displays : HP Pavilion MD6580N 65" DLP Rear-Projector / Toshiba 65H81 65" CRT Rear-Projector
Now, that's some equipment I'd give an arm and a leg for. Hell, even watching a not-so-good movie would be an experience in itself.

Their final thoughts on the movies:

The Last Samurai -

"There are some shots that were breathtaking -- the kind of three-dimensional images you rarely seen outside of the cinema. Close-ups predictably had the biggest wow factor, though even some of the widest panoramic shots boasted noticeable fine detail that exceeded anything seen on standard DVD. Colors also "popped" incredibly well, with a few shots containing lots of deep oranges and lush greens that were incredibly striking. The transfer's blacks were also rock solid, and contrast excellent. Plus, I noticed none of the ringing or halos still frequently seen on standard DVD transfers, which gave 'Last Samurai' a very natural, film-like appearance."

Serenity -

"It certainly looks better on HD-DVD than on any other format currently available. Still, given the grungy look of the film, it is not really prime demo material. It also doesn't offer much more than improved video over the standard DVD release, so unless you haven't already picked up the flick on disc, this may not be one you have to run out and upgrade to show off your new HD-DVD player."

your so called first HD-DVD's are NOT in fact true HD-DVD discs these are simply standard dvd's that ALSO contain a 1080i or 720p WMV video for view on a computer/etc... This has also been done with numerous IMAX dvd's and even the Terminator 2 Ultimate DVD...

The format is indeed new, and these are the first retail HD-DVD discs.
