Finally: High-Def sales figures

Finally, some figures for online smartypants to work with while they attempt to prognosticate which HD format will win over the other. High-Def Digest reports that the Nielsen VideoScan - the entertainment industry's leading source of competitive sales info - has made its first public release of sales numbers for Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs.

While the numbers might not be as crisp as some pundits would like, the figures do suggest some trending. There aren't any hard sales figures, just an index of how each format is fairing against the other.

So how does the battlefield look? To be blunt, things look good for Blu-ray. Between January 7 and 14, Blu-ray managed to close the gap of total discs sold since inception, with HD-DVD by over seven percentage points. High-Def Digest thinks that the data suggests that if the current trend continues, the two formats could be at disc sales parity within weeks.

The charts first appeared in Home Media Magazine. Here's High-Def Digest's reproduction of the charts:

Charts - Image 2

Does this mean eventual Blu-ray dominance? Well, it is still too early to say anything definitive, and the HD DVD camp isn't exactly rolling over and giving up. The good news for Blu-ray here is that its catching up, and studios are feeling confident about the format. High-Def Digest has reported that Fox has even gone as far as to say that a growing sales gap that would see Blu-ray outselling HD DVD by a 3.5-to-1 ratio by the end of March this year.

The consensus is that those weeks, The Covenant and Crank were released, with no new major HD-DVD releases.

» Just curious

I'm wondering how the sales will look when the X360 gets its HD-DVD attachment. THAT will determine what the superior format is.

» European PS3 Launch Preview

You have to pay $1,500 US to buy a PS3 bundled package (with PSP console and crappy games). Sony is doing crazy things for game addicts. So, European game addicts who lead worthless lives (or should I say those lifeless game addicts whose lives are worth $7 per hour) must pay such amount of money to buy a PS3 console. Way to go, Sony. I can kind of foresee what the PS4’s launch look like.

* PS4 Launch Preview in 2015

* Sony says...

(1) Since the new PlayStation 4 is so advanced, we could only make only 100 PS4 consoles for the grand worldwide launch.

Five days after the console’s launch, people have seen all kinds of news on TV. People have done things like prostituting, killing, driving and shooting and robbery to get hands on a PS4.

(2) Because PS4 is too evolved, we have removed all kinds of unnecessary crappy things on the controller. Our new controller will not have the gay rumble function like our ass competitor’s Xbox 450’s controller’s. In fact, we actually removed all those lame-ass buttons and D-pads; moreover, those overrated analog sticks were gone, too. You don’t even have to input your commands by pressing buttons like ancient monkeys. Our new PS4 consoles will play the games by itself; thus, rendering gamers obsoletes. Playing PS4 games is just like watching a movie, and this is the true next-gen gaming experience.

(3) Now, this is the year 2015, and screen resolutions like 1080p are so old school; therefore, all PS4 games natively support only 1,000,000 progressive scan resolution. Making games in such high resolution is the number one reason of high game development cost; also, making such high resolution textures and graphics related data will take a very long time. Thus, there will be no PS4 games available until 2020.

However, the game addicts don’t have to worry about purchasing PS4 consoles. You will be able to play all those 10 year old PS3 games you owned before. Moreover you can also download 20 year old PS2 games and 30 year old PS1 games via PlayStation Network from day one.

(4) Since our ground breaking PS4s can only output screen resolution of 1,000,000p, you must own an HDTV (Hugh Diamond TV), otherwise your PS4s will be unusable. Since these new Hugh Diamond TVs are too advanced for the time being, the first HDTV will be commercially available in 2025; that’s 10 years after the launch of PS4.

You game addicted worthless 3rd raters who purchase our PS4 consoles don’t have to worry about anything since our PS4 consoles are made to last for 100 years.

All the analyst said that the PS3 will not be a factor on the format war and this proves them wrong.

People who buy a PS3 and have a HDTV will probably want to try out blu-ray movies. Same goes for people who have a Xbox360+ HD DVD add-on and a HDTV.

Both formats are getting a good amount of titles this year and from the looks of statistics, Blu-ray will definitely be the winner of 2007 unless HD DVD will drop their prices for players or possibly bundle them with HDTVs.

You're an idiot. these are SALES FIGURES.the Talledega nights which came with the first 100,000 PS3's is NOT SOLD. It specifically is even labeled not for sale. they CANT make up numbers using this...

» unfair comparison

The problem with the comparison at the moment is the content avaliable for people to buy on HD-DVD. Studios like Warner have slowed down the releases of HD-DVD because of complaints from Bluray that releases were coming out on HD-DVD first, mainly due to bluray production problems halting its release. So when more titles come out on HD-DVD (when bluray get their ass into gear) then sales figures will be completely different. I think most people with HD-DVD already have most of the titles avaliable and are just waiting for new ones

Then I guess 2 million Blu-Ray players didn't sell past holiday season either.

This has been a discussion over at the avs forums.

These figures do not include the "free" Blu-ray movie that came with PS3s.

These figures were taken from the sales in stores. Not by Sony, not by anyone in the Blu-ray camp. So these figures are completely sales of blu-ray movies.

» Clutching at straws

Lets face it at the moment PS3 owners are willing to grab hold of any news be it bull***** or not if it says Blu Ray or PS3 selling better than X,they have no games so WHYare 360 owners even bothering to reply to this?,let them watch their films and just go play your AAA HD games.

x box 3 will come with blu ray ,so i gues you x-bots want buy it hey.

consensus at AVS forum is that those sales figures are bogus because HD-DVD combo discs were not included:

» Without any sound over 15KHz

have fun with your compressed DD 5.1 while the BD camp kicks it up with 7.1 covering the WHOLE AUDIBLE RANGE uncompressed. but then again i forgot.. most 360 gamers dont even have an A/V reciever let alone an HDTV. And there approx. 1-2 AAA games for 360 at the moment..

You see its not just about cosmetics seems like the internal RAM in the PS3 is not big enough so add that to your price list and see how it fans out.

» Who am I kidding?

I'm pretty disappointed at Sony right now. I loved my PS2 and PS1 to death, but they just don't seem to have what it takes anymore. I'm tired of making up these reasons why the PS3 is better when they either are hardly supported or so hyped up

Then I've been saying there's no good games on the 360 lately. That's the hardest lie I've ever made up and I think it's a losing battle. All I can do is use others' names and pretend I'm them to make it seem like the 360's fans have went to Sony.

I traded in my 60GB PS3 yesterday for only $400. I figured that's the most I can get for it as I don't see sony doing anything significant this generation. I even tried out the 7.1 lossless audio at my rich friend's house who can afford such a setup and I really couldn't tell a difference between that and DD 5.1.

I'm just tired of being a sony puppet. If I'm going to spend $2000-$3000 on games and accessories for a console over its lifetime, I want to make sure it will succeed.

by Mr. Common Sense - 2007-02-05 01:17
» I have common sense, and it's too early to tell

Just because you're worried PS3 will fail you have to push blu ray like sony does with lies, hype, and exxagerations. Probably because blu ray is the ONLY thing the PS3 can do halfway decent.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-05 03:27

XBOX 360 premium + HD-DVD equals the price of the PS3 60GB.

How is that too much money? The HD-DVD attachment is a seperate drive and can be taken to a friend's house to watch movies or even works with Windows PCs! It also comes with King Kong while PS3 makes you pay extra for a movie.

HD-DVD was not ready when the XBOX 360 was released, fool. You do not have an XBOX 360.
