Fancy an in-car video server for the PSP? |
Ó
One of the most useful gadgets created in the modern world is the in-car video player, because in the words of one dad, "It keeps those kids from bugging me with 'Are we there yet?!'" So when the in-car player of PBS' Robert X Cringely broke down, he decided to whip up a nifty replacement: an in-car media server. What (or WTH) does this have to do with the PSP, PSPUpdates readers may ask. The PSP becomes the new in-car TV, hooking up to the in-car server as though it were a LocationFree player. So if you're tired of playing games during a long car trip and want to watch a movie - except they don't fit in the Memory Stick and your local store doesn't stock UMDs anymore... you get the idea.
Bob took for his server a Norhtec MicroClient Jr. PC... from Thailand (tip: he also says that the cheapest non-Windows PCs around are most often found in Thailand. Just a hint.). It only cost him around US$ 190 to get the box with Wi-Fi capability, and a USB slot for an external storage device, such as a 4GB flash drive. Fanless it was, but at least it's robust enough to survive the horrors of riding in a car with boys, he says.
The server runs off Puppy Linux, which can boot off a CD or, in Bob's case, a CompactFlash card. It can run off the 12 volts of a car battery. It's a bit smaller than a Mac Mini, which makes it PERFECT for fitting under the car seat. A godsend for Bob, now the kids don't bug him with endless "Are we there yets".
Which brings this story to another interesting tidbit about the PSP. The PSP Bob used was a gift from the kids' Grandma, "who had no idea that two-year-olds don't get such things for their birthdays, and when they do get them they try to flush them down the toilet. Though not advertised as such, the PSP is EXTREMELY water-resistant."

Is that kid playing GTA?
That is the only reason i even read the comments.
Damn, thats a great idea.
becasue his mom and dad arnt hot headed retards, And besides, If he was influcenced by it he would jack a covette or somethin not a family car.
I want to get one, it would be great to put next to my(ppc) mac mini and use it insted of shizit vpc.
about the psp being extremely water resistant is true. My buddy left his on the roof of his car during a rainstorm and drove a mile down the road before pulling off into a gas station. Not only did the soaking wet system some how stay atop the car it was in perfect working order. the screen was even shiny!
I wonder how can he stream the video to the psp???
WITH PIMPSTREAMER OF COURSE probly exellent connection with that short a distance it would be freakin sweet im totally gonna do this on my next trip!
i started playin gta when i was 8. so?? i dont care. im still not one of those maniacs, although i got an airgun with 1500fps when i was 12...
lol he's never heard of pimpstreamer. thats funny.
So, how is he serving up the video?
for the price and hassle factor, just buy a couple of 4 gig sticks ffs. or even 3 or 4 of them.
I Was thinking doing something similiar to my car, Currently I have my Psp hooked up with my dvd player which utilizes THX 5,1 etc. also gaining the benefits to listen to dual layer dvd's full of mp3 ;) then the dvd player is connected to 2x amps, 600w rms / 1050w rms. I have only 2 Gb ms stick in my psp so the question is.. to stick a mini pc with a 300 gb drive and linux pimpstream.. or try to locate an 4 gb ms stick here in iceland, which I seem to can't find anywhere :( best part is 2gb cost's 126 usd here.. or 18000 kr
I dont even get why pspupdates publishes an article like this if no one has a clue of how is he streaming the video to the psp.......
Man you took the words out of my mouth/fingers/thought :P. I want to know how the kids dad got the streaming video working.
The only way to do this if you have a PSP with a firmware capable to run homebrew on. There is a java thing for the PSP and in combination with PiMPStreamer you can stream video's to your PSP. Here is a link to start with: http://pimpware.pspstart.de/
for having a 4gb pendrive in there, it's not worth it. but if you put a >100gb hdd in there (and yes, you can protect against physical impact) it would be extremelly interesting as a media center for music/video in the car for quite some time :D i plan doing it sooner or later, carputers sound fun.
