Eye-Fi: Wireless for Digital Cameras

Eye-fiOk, this is very cool.  It shouldn't be news to anyone that there are now digital cameras on the market that offer WiFi built-in.  Previously, I thought this was the way to go, but I've had a change of heart, and am now completely stoked for the official launch of Eye-fi.

So what is Eye-fi?  Glad you asked.  It's a media card that combines storage with built-in WiFi connectivity!  So take your pictures, and when you're within range of a (pre setup) computer, your pictures will start downloading to your system.  No hassle with extra cables, card readers, etc.  So why not just buy a camera with built-in technology for this?  Well, maybe I love my camera as it is, or don't have enough dough to get a new gadget like this.  Or maybe I want this little piece of tech from Eye-fi because it works in any device that takes a media card.  There - now the wheels are turning, aren't they?  There are TONS of possibilities with this thing.

It's still in final development, so it's not on the market yet, but it's really only a matter of time.  I'll be waiting for this baby.  I'd love to have this functionality, wouldn't you?

Well you would rarely be taking photos of things when you are close to your computer but I guess you could send photos over to the pc instead of connecting it. Wouldn't it be a waste of money to do this though? It only saves a short amount of time.

i agree. I doubt that the card would delete them either, so to clear it youd have to go format. Then id always be worried if the photos had transfered or not, and check haha. So wouldnt save that much time, I think it would be more of a hassle... another thing, so if the photos on the camera arnt deleted, and you dont delete them yourself, then go and take more, then come back "near your computer" are the photos transfered over a second time? would they replace the old ones because of same file name? and if they replace because of file name, what if you did delete them, and they are different photos? will the new replace the old? Just my opinion, but i think Wifi needs a screen, not just built into the memory card.

I'd love a card that automatically sent my images to a pre configured pc (deleting them once verified).

Imagine filling the card with pics, move to within ad-hoc wireless range, download and repeat.

No cables or swapping cards around, saving you the expense of replacing that new SLR you just bought with a new wifi one.

You could also instantly upload all your kids pics when within range of some open cafe, moving them to flicker then to your mum's wireless picture frame. Just watch what you take photo's of though :)
