Disney - Image 1Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia in New York, Disney CEO Robert Iger said that movie studios not supporting Sony's Blu-ray format are shortsighted and the move will cost them in the future. He also called the studios he did not name "greedy" for taking easy money.

Iger said that the winner of the format war is clear, seeing that Blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD on a two to one basis consistently. The Sony format has a larger install base, thanks in large part to its high-end, Blu-ray capable HD-DVD drive.

As it stands, the format war lines are drawn with Sony, Disney, 20th Century Fox, and MGM all backing Blu-ray. On the HD-DVD side, Toshiba has Paramount, Dreamworks, and Universal in its team. Warner Bros. remains neutral, creating content for both formats.

News Corp's Rupert Murdoch, however, didn't hold back as he said that Paramount accepted a substantial amount of money from Toshiba to go exclusive. He says the deal was worth US$ 150 million.

Disney announced at the same confab that it will continue to grow its robust business opportunities worldwide, expanding to Russia, China, and India for some opportunities to entertain and help Blu-ray out along the way.

Wow what irony! Disney calling movie studios greedy! They way his attack is worded, it sounds like their decision is costing disney, hence the announcment. F*ck disney.

The way the format war had been unspooling, it did seem as if this would be over come Jan-Feb 2008, and Blu-ray would emerge a battered winner, but a winner nonetheless. This move by Paramount (and Dreamworks) of accepting a Microsoft bribe via Toshiba (several circles are actively saying this) will serve to push the conclusion of the format war further back until BOTH Blu-ray and HD-DVD are no longer viable alternatives, and the market moves on to the download solution that Microsoft is pushing for (Nothing wrong with the download business model, it's just that it is too future-oriented as far as current Internet technology goes to be viable at present). So, from their perspective, Disney (and other studios) are stuck at the moment. They cannot back off and let go of their investment, neither can they win. So they see themselves losing money consistently for another 18 months or so, and possibly for nothing. That is probably why Disney is attacking those studios, because it WILL cost them. BTW, what DO you have against the BR format anyway? My perspective is, if I get the same picture and audio quality from two formats, I would certainly go for the one with greater storage space, as it certainly has the potential to offer more in future. What is your perspective?

.

I can't deny I would like to see more blu ray releases (and cheaper) since I do now have a blu ray player, but I hate corporations like disney. This guy said there's no format war outside the US, which is obviously not true. I want the companies to play fair and not lie. Buying out the competition might not seem fair on the part of Toshiba, but I'm sure something along those lines went on by sony to get their studios' initial backing and was necessary to stay in the game. I think the manufacturers and studios have learned an important lesson from this fiasco, and I don't think there will be any more format wars in the future. That's a good by-product from this stalemate.

"I think the manufacturers and studios have learned an important lesson from this fiasco" - LOL. If that were the case and Corporations, Manufacturers and Studios were to learn from their mistakes that quickly, don't you think the following would already have happened: 1) Sony, Microsoft, Apple, Napster, etc would long since have opted out of DRM 2) RIAA would not be running after students who have downloaded songs/movies, and would be trying to come up with a better business model (better quality cheap downloads comes to mind) 3) MS Windows would have less bugs 4) The Sony rootkit fiasco would never have happened etc. etc :)

YOU KEEP UP TO DATE!

if you had kept up to date you'd know that they are not making a 200GB blu-ray disk they said they couldn't also what about this 1TB 3D-DVD? hmm?
by ValiX - 2007-09-21 00:28:50
CheWu...

your an idiot. Blu-ray atm, can reach 100GB dual layer which is almost double your so called 51GB HD-DVD. There is also a CONFIRMED 100GB single layer BD disc in development. So correct me if I'm worng, but thats 200GB dual layer? And what the hell is a 3D-DVD? Yeah... we may see 1TB discs in 10 years but for now I'm going to stick with good Blu-ray which has the bigger capacity thank you.
