Blu-Ray to porn: "We don't like you either"

Lover's quarrel, maybe? - Image 1Remember that time that we reported that the adult film industry prefers the HD-DVD over Blu-Ray (or that at least some of porn companies do)? Well, apparently, that's okay since Blu-Ray doesn't like the porn industry, either, so there's no love lost (then again it's porn - what's love got to do, got to do with it?).

As reported by the IDG News service, Sony has noted that they won't be stopping the adult industry from using the Blu-Ray format for producing their videos, but they may not use Sony DADC Global (disc-replicating subsidiary) when it comes down to mass producing the discs. This basically means that the industry will have to find someone else to replicate those Blu-Ray adult movies in bulk.

According to Digital Playground's Robby D, "As far as I understand, Sony has said to the replicators that if you replicate adult, you'll lose your license."

Besides not having anyone to mass produce their movies in this format, members of the adult movie industry will also be quite literally on their own if a technical issue arises, especially now that Sony has indicated that they will not cooperate or assist in their endeavors.

Sony has alot of explaining to do, like explaining why they want to lose...

How many of you guys really rent porn? Most everyone get their daily porn needs from the internet anyways.

by person - 2007-01-20 08:51
» yep

Its so True

by SeanRoss - 2007-01-20 08:54
» I don't rent or buy porn

But it is a fact that people still buy porn DVDs and such and so on. It is a multi-billion dollar industry. It is THE biggest money making industry. People don't like to admit it, but it's gotten that way somehow. Coupled with the fact that Blu-ray players cost more than HD-DVD players (saw an ad for HD-DVD player for around $500 non sale price).

I'm starting to think Sony just want's to take itself out of the industry. I just hope Blu-Ray doesn't bring down the growth of PS3

» Sony screwing their format...again

Does anyone remember Betamax? most of you probably don't. It was the rival to vhs tapes that sony came up with. it was smaller in physical size, better video and audio quality and stored roughly the same amount as the big bulky vhs tapes.

But do you know why it flopped? They banned the porn industry from even using Betamax.

Magazines, VHS and DVDs owe the porn industry a great thanks for using their format and keeping it alive and running.

so roughly 30 years later Sony is making basically the same mistake again. Oh yeah they're letting them use the format but they're, in a round-a-bout way, banning them in making mass copies of the film. So what's the point in even letting the porn industry use the format if they can't easily mass produce the content?

Bad move Sony....bad move

by Vietone - 2007-01-20 09:10
» Well it sucks but its normal I guess

For one HD DVD players are already at an extreme Low so the chance of alot of Porn HD DVD movies being released will be slim until more players are out.

Sony is being an ***** because they can. Blu-ray players are now over a 10:1 ratio over HD DVD players and they have a chance to completely dominate and take over the porn industry on a next gene format.

While it is true that porn was a big factor in the VHS vs betamax battle, these days more people get their stuff from the internet then DVDs so the porn industry will still be a big player, just not as big as it was when few people had even 56k connections.

by Alex - 2007-01-20 10:06
» People just use the internet, don't they?

Doesn't make sense that Sony would prevent the industry from using Their method of replication. Either way, there's plenty of other methods. I mean, it's not even Sony's format so really there's no reason for anyone to come to Sony for replication technology. Why not just go to the Blu-ray Association? They made the format. They know what to do.

by nismobeach - 2007-01-20 10:09
» This article is BS

There is nothing stoping porn studios from going through another official BD replication facility besides Sony's (hence why Sony admited to it in the article.)

Since the BDA makes up more than just Sony, Sony does not have the ability to veto the pressing of porn BDs by other replicators.

If that wasn't the case then Japanese porno BDs from a couple of months ago wouldn't already exist.

This article is nothing more than anti-Sony FUD.

by Dizzy - 2007-01-20 10:27
» ahhh well

Well whatever does people migth say all i know is whoever gets back up from the porn industry is gonna be the big winner !!! dont they know how huge this industry is ??? if that article is really true then everybody get ready coz HD is gonna take it hands down...Sony better think twice ...its not such a smart move

by R4K - 2007-01-20 10:52
» Nah.

There's already plenty of Blu-ray porn out in Japan. This is just FUD, probably spread by Microsoft (as always). Digital Playground, one of the largest U.S. porn distributors, said that they're choosing HD-DVD because it costs less to manufacture...about 8 cents less per disc. (woohoo?)

There's plenty of other distributors though, and with Blu-ray players outselling HD-DVD players 10:1, and Blu-ray movie sales dominating the HD movie market, they'll have to jump over to the Blu-ray camp eventually.

The internet also guarentees that it won't be as dramatic as the Betamax/VHS war. It's a lot easier to click and sample online than to go to a store and buy it up, even if it is ***** in HD.

by Annoyed Sony Fan - 2007-01-20 11:18
» I dont get it

Why do Sony keep on shooting themselves in the foot, why do they have to take the moral high ground and refuse pr0n noone cares if u let it on your format or not. No one is judging microsoft so why not just allow it and make some money from this multi - billion dollar industry. And to everyone who keeps on saying its all on the internet are wrong yes the internet sector of pr0n has grown tons but there are still loads of adult DVD shops which surely shows that there are still plenty of people getting adult DVDs rather than using the internet. However, i was thinking do you really want to see pr0n in HD in this area you really can have to much detail.

by nismobeach - 2007-01-20 11:58
» Read what I typed!

Porn is allowed on BD. Sony just chooses not to mess with it. That's their RIGHT.

by ContrAss - 2007-01-20 12:13
» if you really

want to see a stupid head line, go to gametrailers. They blatantly posted the headline as "sony says no to porn on blu-ray disks".

by Chava _un_Logged - 2007-01-20 12:16
» Really

All this says is companies that got their lisence to replicate BD-ROM disks from SONY will lose the liscence from SONY if the copy porn onto SONY branded disks.

Now, if the company got their stuff from TDK, Maxwell, Pioneer, etc, they are fine. So porn will be on BD-ROMs after a while and those disks won't be made or sold by SONY.

well sony just hung themselves

by Jitty - 2007-01-20 13:00
» What are doing sony?

Why is sony being such a dumbass, this could really help blu-ray. I mean, even if sony is ethically against porn, they could allow just temporarily; at least until they win the format war. COME ON SONY!!!!

» Edit* What are you doing sony?

» Sony just killed Blue Ray

This is the same reason Sony betamax lost to VHS.

The porn industry, whose financial impact dwarfs mainstream Hollywood, adopted VHS. Pure and simple.

From a business perspective this move by Sony exercises extremely poor judgement. Why would you want to cut out a user base that generate billions annually?

This will either kill Blue Ray as a format or Sony will be forced to reconsider.

by no - 2007-01-20 14:34
» no

you are using the "10:1" ratio by using the PS3s. Not all PS3 owners will actually buy a ton of blu-ray movies.

just wait vietone.

However, they will buy some... which is good enough to count them.

by fgbgf - 2007-01-20 15:42
» fdfg

they was no internet by that time dumass so sony did not kill bluray.and now tv have porn who when to see porn in hd more money just buy it and dvd or online

by R4K - 2007-01-20 18:31
» You'd think people would stop posting crap

after the truth was found out. Sony doesn't want porn printed on Sony-brand discs...there's a hell of a lot more companies out there that make discs though. TDK is basically the king of Blu-ray discs. Hell, they even invented its Durabis technology.

Even when you assume that what was said was true, it does NOT mean that Porn is banned from Blu-ray. Jeez, there's just tons of people trying to take Sony down in every way possible. Sony gets critisized for having not enough consoles in stores. Then they get critisized for having Enough consoles in stores. It just never ends does it.

by cgo - 2007-01-20 18:49
» Recording length

I've read in a lot of places that the betamax lost the format war because they're standard recording length was only 60 minutes. Not long enough to record a movie, why would anyone want it?

Sony even agrees to this day that that's what killed betamax supposedly.

by LOL@PS3 - 2007-01-20 19:28

i had a betamax and my tapes were longer than 1 hour.

most of my blanks were 3 hours.

well the japanise dont need porn because theres allways a 5 yen ho somewhere along the street!

by xche78x - 2007-01-21 00:10
» somehow...

good move but...

how about the profit from those?

you can still mass produce em and put a high parental control over it (max maybe). and if sony presses it, then sony can control the code for such adult films. anyways safer is better so just saying NO completely shuts off the annoyance. for this move, Sony i give you a 9 out of 10

They just don't learn do they? They're making the same mistakes 20 years later. VHS was cheap to manufacture and allowed porn. Stupid company

by Mr. Common Sense - 2007-01-21 06:45
» at least sony invented the CD...

The compact disc was and will always be the only media invented by sony that was actually successful. The only competition was tapes and records.

betamax - failure

mini disc - failure outside Japan

memory stick- only used on sony products

UMD- failure

Blu Ray - well on its way to failure #5

well...wow...say they sold 500 thousand copy of porn...then they save....4000000 cents..which is...40 thousand dollars...hmmm...not bad...but i still like BD for movies due to it's superior quality and security.

Remember that this era is different in the fact that most people have the internet. Realize back then, they did not, and video tapes were well... yeha. lol~

» What?

Nice call? Are you serious?

this is like digging their own blu-grave.

Didn't they learn anything from BetaMax?

I'm 15 and i can do better marketing than that.

If people don't want porn, they just don't buy it. I wouldn't buy it either, but you forget how big the porn industry actually is.

by Stilgar91 - 2007-02-01 08:10
» pffff

OK, that's true but it just isn't smart. We're living in the 21'st century here, why can't they just accept that porn plays a big part in it? Not everyone has the guts to stand up for his habits but the major part of the adult community does watch porn, so probably does a lot of people at SONY.

by Stilgar91 - 2007-02-01 08:15
» RE: 'at least sony invented the CD...'

Well, the Blu-Ray... I actually thought it was going to beat HD-DVD with having a lot of major (film) companies, but when I read this I really cursed sony. When will they learn marketing dammit? Don't get me wrong, I'm still supporting Blu-Ray but I'm afraid less and less people will.
